Population density is a
measurement of people per KM2.

Activity 1
Calculate the Spanish population
density according to the data given.
Activity 2
According to the coropleth map, what is
the population density of Ireland?
What countries have a low
population density (less than 9)?
Activity 3
Copy this map showing the Worlds
Population density and explain the
reasons for this unequal distribution.

Growth

The world population is the total number of living

humans on Earth at a given time. As of July
2008, the world's population is estimated to be
just over 6.684 billion. In line with population
projections, this figure continues to grow at
rates that were unprecedented before the 20th
century, although the rate of increase has
almost halved since its peak of 2.2 percent per
year, which was reached in 1963. The world's
population, on its current growth trajectory, is
expected to reach nearly 9 billion by the year
2042.

Geography class Lesson

Population growth is the result of the

balance between birth rate, death rate
and migration.

Activity 1
Define the concepts above
Activity 2
Calculate birth rate, death rate and natural
decrease or increase of Spain according to
the data given in the chart below:
Population 2006

466371

Number of deceased

Activity 3
What would happen to the worlds population if
the death rate were higher than the birth
rate?

Factors affecting birth rate and death

rate.

Activity
Why was there a population explosion after
1950?

Geography Class: Lesson

The Demographic Transition Model

describes population growth.
Activity 1
Describe and interpret this graph
Activity 2
Why is the population of Spain and U.K.
falling?
Population Policies. Governments play
a role in controlling population.
India and China Population growth. Would
providing free contraception lower the
birth rate in India?
Why do governments need population
policies?
Why did the Chinese government
introduce a one-child policy? Explain
how the Chinese government tries to
ensure couples only have one child.
What is your opinion about what they
have done?

Geography/English Classes:
Pyramids show population structure
Activity: Contrast the population structures of Brazil and Germany.
Example: The percentage of aged people is higher in Germany than in Brazil.

Geography Class
Demographic terms used to describe population: Infant mortality rate, life
expectancy, economically active, dependants
Activity: Complete the following chart with adjectives.

Geography Class: Migrations

GEOGRAPHY CLASS
There are three types of migration: International migration, Regional
migration and local migration. Migration happens because of push
and pull factors
Activity
Define the following concepts: International migrations, Economic
migrants, Brain drain, rural-urban migration, conter-urbanisation,
commuting, refugees.

Geography/English classes:

GEOGRAPHY CLASS
Activity
Look at the diagram and classify the factors (E,S,P,EN standing for
Economic, Social, Political or Environmental factor).

Assessment Activities (English &

Geography classes)
Activity 1
Identify one example of a push factor,
one example of a pull factor and the
one example of a barrier to migration,
each of which is mentioned in the
passage beside.
Activity 2
Name one other barrier to migration,
which is not mentioned in the passage.

Read the passage below:

When
Brid N Laoghaire left her West Kerry
home in 1851 there was barely enough to eat.
Following the death of her husband in a fishing
accident off the Great Blasket Island, Brid had
no option but to follow her eldest sister Maire to
Boston. It was Maire who made Brids trip
possible by sending the fare-a small fortune of
nine pounds- for Brid to sail to Boston from
Queenstown in the County of Cork. Saying
goodbye to her ageing parents would be the
hardest part of Brids going; though she was
encouraged by the prospects of a job as a
kitchen maid in the same house in which Maire
had reached the elevated post of assistant
housekeeper. On the night before her departure
an American wake was held in Brids
homestead outside Ballyferriter. Then another
daughter of Erin joined the ever-growing exodus
to a foreign land.
From An Irish Emigrants Story.

Assessment Activities
(Geography)
1. What was the
approximate population
of the world in 1850?
2. By how many times has
the worlds population
increased from 1850 to
2003?
3. Give one reason for the
very low population
growth before 1800.

Assessment Activities (Geography)

Circle the Pyramid showing the developing country.

In Germany, what percentage of the population is between 10 and 19 years
of age?
What percentage of the population is aged 60 and over in United States
pyramid?
What percentage of population is aged 14 and under in Kenya?
