Lesson 1

Material 1 : Article Will Jeremy Lin Be the First Asian-American NBA Draft Pick?
Material 2 : Reading Comprehension Worksheet
1. Instructions:
a. Activity 1 : Based on the article, students will have to fill in the blanks with numbers.
b. Activity 2 : Students are to tick the circle next to the word that means nearly the same as the
underlined word in each sentence.
2. Description:
Material 1 is made up a reading comprehension article taken from EducationWorld.com
accompanied by a worksheet that consists of 2 activities. The first activity is a reading
comprehension activity where students will fill in the blanks with numbers based on the article. The
second activity is a multiple-choice-question activity where students will have to select the word
that is nearly the same (synonymous) to the words given.
3. Rationale for choosing and developing material
The use of reading comprehension materials is to ensure familiarity within the students as they will
be seeing a lot of reading comprehension tests in their schooling life. Other than that, reading
comprehension materials also help students to develop reading comprehension skills where
students do not only read for the sake of reading but also obtaining information from them. Pam
Marshall in sharing The Importance of Reading Comprehension on K12Reader website states that
the goal of reading is to derive meaning and students, sadly, do not have enough reading
comprehension skill to fulfil tasks expected of them. Although the material may seem boring and
test-like, it provides a platform for the students to practise and sharpen their reading
comprehension skill. The first activity helps the students to recognize new words and apply them
accordingly. Also, some of the questions implies to usage of mathematical skills which will students
to apply a non-linguistic skill into a language usage instead. The second activity helps students learn
new words and build their vocabulary. In teaching English, especially to ones of young age, it is vital
to continually expand their lexicons to enable them to use a wide range of words and languages in
their daily lives.
4. Strengths and Weaknesses of Material
Strengths:
i.
ii.
iii.
iv.

Familiar to students
Easy to answer as students are familiar with the pattern
Flexible and reusable for other functions
May be reused for different activities

Weaknesses:
i.

May induce boredom to students as students may be too familiar with the activity

ii. May cause stress and uneasiness to students as they may take the material as a test and
would be stressed to find the correct answer
iii. Topic may bore or side-line some students
5. Reflection
Reading comprehension passages have always been used in schools and even in examinations.
Although this sort of material may be old-fashioned and may be out-dated, it has stood the test of
time and is still useful and relevant as of today. As mentioned, reading comprehension activities are
flexible and can be used and reused in various aspects of the language and to enhance and sharpen
reading comprehension skills.
As for the material, I feel the material is suitable enough for Form 2 students, especially those in the
urban areas and would be received better in an all-boys class compared to a co-ed school or an allgirls school. The material would be well received in urban areas as more students there have access
to internet and would know what is happening around the world. The person of choice also may
inspire the students as it shows that a person could be all-rounded as Jeremy Lin graduated from
Harvard, a well-known university, is active in sports as well as a religious person. This may open and
introduce students to a role model. Plus, being Asian American, some students from the urban areas
who prefer to be associated with the Western Culture may find a mid-point and relate to the person
featured in the passage.
6. Evaluation
The worksheet itself serves as an evaluation form for the students performance.
