INTRODUCTION
This is a supplement to the NexSentry 4100 Series Installation and Operation manual. Please refer
to it for general infomation about the NexSentry 4100 Series product.
The NexLine Plus is used when upgrading an access control system from an SE800 series to a
NexSentry access control unit (ACU). Digireaders and other digital devices replace analog
sensors; communication over coaxial cable is replaced by S-Net communication over twisted-pair
wire. The NexLine Plus makes it possible to use existing coaxial cables to transmit S-Net device
data and monitor point signals to and from the NexSentry Controller. Monitor point wires,
previously installed for use with an SE 774 Multiple Switch Monitor may be used with the NexLine
Plus. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the NexLine Plus configured in an upgrade. Note that
the NexLine Plus will only work with the 4100 ACU firmware 2.2 and above.

LEDS
The NexLine Plus includes two dual-colored LEDs (red and green):
n

COM LED (CR4)

Coax COM LED (CR6)

COM (COMMUNICATION) LED

The communications LED (CR4) provides two separate indications of activity: The green LED of
CR4 lights while data is flowing to and from the S-Net connector. The red LED of CR4 is the VITAL
function it lights on and off (cycles) when the processor in the NexLine Plus is operating properly.

COAX COM LED

The COAX Com (communications) LED (CR6) flashes red and green when data flows between the
coax connnector and the S-Net connector.

FUSE (F1)
The fuse F1 is the only field replaceable components in the NexLine Plus. If replacement is
required, use only a 1/2 amp fuse. Table 2 lists recommended fuse manufacturers.

S-NET ADDRESS SWITCH (S1)

The 16-position switch (Figure 5) on the NexLine Plus printed circuit assembly is used to set a
unique S-Net address. Valid settings are 1 through 9. Address zero (0) places the NexLine Plus
into a test mode and starts the relay test that results in an audible sound. Address zero is reserved
for use by WSE service personnel.
If only one NexLine Plus is used, its address should be set to 1. If there are more than one NexLine
Plus, their addresses must start from 1 and must be sequential without skipping numbers. The
address, along with the contact pair number, identifies the monitor input in the NexSentry database
(also used for relay outputs in Version 3.X). The address is in the form X.Y, where X is the S-Net
address of the NexLine Plus and Y is the contact pair number; the Tamper contacts may be
reported as the device Tamper or addressed as monitor input X.5 on (NexSentry Controller Version
3.0 or later only).

Figure 5: Address Switch

Note
Maximum allowable setting may be dependent on the firmware release. See Database
Configuration.

JUMPERS (W1, W2, AND W3)

There are three jumper locations the NexLine Plus. The purpose of each jumper is discussed as
follows:

W1 JUMPER
This jumper must be removed for proper operation.

NexLine Plus

WSE

W2 - 120-OHM TERMINATION
Install this jumper on both pins to terminate the S-Net line. The jumper places 120 ohms of
resistance between Data A and Data B.

W3- NORMAL 1K/2K

This jumper is used to select the interpretation of the 1K and 2K states of a monitor input. These
settings apply to all 4 inputs no individual point programming.

INSTALLATION
When the NexLine Plus is replacing a SE 774 MSM, the NexLine Plus will be installed at the same
location to facilitate connection to existing monitor input lines. A NexLine coax adapter must be
installed at the other end of the coax cable: S-Net twisted pair cable will then connect the NexLine
adapter to the ACU. The maximum length of coax cable and the maximum distance between the
ACU and any S-Net reader is shown in Figure 6.

S-NET WIRING
S-Net uses shielded, dual twisted pair cable 24 AWG or larger.
1.

Remove 2 inches (5 cm) of the plastic jacket and the shielding foil from the S-Net cable.

2.

Strip each wire back 1/4 inch (6 mm).

3.

Tin or place a crimp sleeve on the ends of the stripped wire and the ground wire. Slide Teflon
tubing or other insulating material over the shield wire.

Figure 8: Inserting Wire into Connector

4.

Insert wires into the connector (Figure 8) and tighten the connector binding screws; torque to
5 inch pounds (0.56Nm). Refer to Figure 2 for connector pin assignments.

MONITOR INPUT WIRING

Twisted-pair cable is used for monitor inputs. The length of the cable between the NexLine Plus
and a set of monitoring contacts can reduce the status detection capability. The cable
recommendations provided in Table 3 are based on measurements of the resistance required to
indicate an OPEN, 2K,1K, or SHORT condition. A typical input circuit for monitoring a four-state
switch is shown in Figure 9. The wiring is the same for NO (Normally Open) and NC (Normally
Closed) inputs.

Figure 9: Monitor Input

Note
Use MP4- (monitor point 4-) for the TAMPER+ return.
Unshielded cables can be used up to 500 feet (150m) if the environment is electrically quiet. Cables
up to 1,000 feet (300m) can be used with some sacrifice of environmental noise immunity.

Shielded cable lengths of up to 2,000 feet (610m) can be accommodated if the wire size is 22 AWG
or larger. Connector-to-conductor capacitance should not exceed 40 pf/ft; shield-to-conductor
capacitance should not exceed 70 pf/ft. Figure 10 shows the correct wiring for a shielded cable.

Figure 10: Shielded Monitor Input

Switch contacts must be high quality material which provide low contact resistance even when
switching very small currents (~2mADC).
When a door switch and REX devices are used on the same door, the two should use adjacent
monitor inputs. The REX should be on the monitor point immediately before the door switch; for
example, REX on 1.2, door switch on 1.3). This minimizes the possibility of producing spurious
DOOR FORCED OPEN alarms.
See S-Net Wiring for the recommended procedures for cable to connector assembly. Use a single
twisted pair, with shield if required, for each monitor input.

DATABASE CONFIGURATION
The DOOR command is used to designate which monitor points are assigned to the door switch
and request-to-exit device, if present. The MONITOR command is used to enter a name for a
monitor input and to assign a report number to it. The report will be generated when the monitor
input is active. The MONITOR prompts when entering database parameters from a terminal are
described as follows:
Monitor Number (X,Y)
Enter the monitor point address. The number assigned to a monitor point will depend on the system
configuration and the firmware revision being used. T hese factors are discussed below.
1. Name (24): ?Enter a name, up to 24 characters in length. When no name is entered, the system
will default to the monitor point number.
2. Report (0-32): 0 ?Select a report to be generated when the monitor point is active. No report will
be generated for the default report number 0.

NEXSENTRY FIRMWARE 2.2

NexSentry firmware Revision 2.2 limits the total number of monitor points which can be addressed
to 32. Monitor points are addressed as X.Y, where the X values are 1 through 8, and the Y values
are 1 through 4. Beginning with the lowest S-Net address, monitor points are designated as 1.1,
1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.1, 2.2,... 8.4. Refer to Table 4 for address examples.
