Studying in a vernacular school

Written by: Anne Martin
Being parents of children in a vernacular school are quite challenging. Furthermore, if the language is not our own mother
tongue. The most common questions asked
are:
What or why did you choose a Chinese school instead of Tamil or national
school for your children?
How are your children coping?
How do you get involved without the
knowledge of the language?
In relation to the first question, it
was more of our eldest daughters preference. This choice came about when she was
cared for by my youngest sister who has
three boys studying in Chinese school .She
was about two years old then. She was fascinated and curious whenever she heard her
cousins communicating in Mandarin where
else we are Indians.
One day, she asked us if it was okay
for her to be educated in a Chinese school
when she was older. As parents, we were
surprised. Initially, we were skeptical whether
to or not to enroll her as we had no idea or
knowledge of Mandarin and how she would
fair in school.
We decided to go along with her
choice but made a pact with her and explained to her on the outcome if she encounters difficulty in understanding and coping
with her lessons. She was able to prove to us
and had good understanding and was able to
communicate well with her friends and teachers.
As to how well they (we have two
girls ages 9 years and 7 years) are coping, we
are satisfied with their progress so far. Both
of them are managing quite well and are able
to follow the related subjects. Besides their

36

subject related areas, we do remind them

about different backgrounds and cultures
in school and how to deal with it without
any prejudice. At times, they do feel the
difference as some of their friends are
from various financial backgrounds. It is
not always easy to make children understand when their friends have more expensive items or travel in bigger cars. We try to
clarify when the need arises to avoid them
from perceiving unfairness and understand
our family principles.
How can we be proactive in our
involvement in their school work despite
not having any knowledge of Mandarin?
This goes a long way back during my school
era when my father would visit my teachers as often as possible to get feedback on
my performance in school. It me feel important and appreciated that my father
was concerned and took pride of my
achievements. As a result, it inculcated the
value of being involved and being responsible for our childrens education.
Although, we are not be able to
help them much in terms of language but
we take the liberty and set time daily to
check their homework and coach them in
areas that we can. This helps them to realize that we are concerned with their school
work and their development in school. This
not only benefits our children but us as
parents too. We are able to identify and
aware of each childs learning needs and
capabilities.
Having said these, we are glad we
decided to give our girls the opportunity to
venture out of our comfort zone. As parents, we also want to ensure that they succeed their own dreams and not ours. It
may not always be smooth sailing but we
are confident of their achievements at SJK
(C) Sin Ming, Semenyih.
