Justification of the relevance of the materials in the lesson

Lesson planning is a vital component of teaching and learning process. Proper

classroom planning will keep teachers organized and on track while teaching, thus allowing
them to helps pupils to reach objectives more easily and easy to manage the classroom. In
producing good teaching and learning process, resource materials known as teaching aids
plays an important role in helping teachers to teach and to attract pupils attention in class.
According to Robson (2012), Teaching aids support the lesson plan and assist learning. In a
legal research skills context, teaching aids use the senses of hearing and sight. I am totally
agree with Robsons statement as a research had been done and indicates that about 12%
of what they learn comes from hearing and 75% comes from what they see. So teacher
need to be aware of the importance of using teaching aids in teaching and learning process
so that the lesson will always be meaningful towards the pupils.
As for this assignment, the first teaching material chosen to be used in the lesson is
picture cards. Picture cards are one of the basic teaching materials that almost the entire
teacher used in activating pupils prior knowledge. By using attractive picture cards also, it
will help teachers to gain pupils interest towards the lesson and generates pupils imaginary
skills through visual. Besides that, the size of the flashcards is also big enough hence
allowing pupils to see what is shown on the cards. According to British Council, 2004, the
size of the picture cards should be big, suitable for the pupils sight as it will be appealing to
them and attract their attention. So picture cards are one of the most helpful teaching
materials to be used in teaching and learning process.
The second teaching materials used are flashcards containing sentences. Flashcards
are the effective and easiest way to learn and remember new information. Flashcards also
are a really handy resource to have and can be useful at every stage of the class. These
cards were designed in order to suits the teacher in conducting drilling activity in teaching
writing skills to pupil. Furthermore, the information is simplified and condenses so that the
pupils will only learn and identify the important facts and ideas instead of just writing the
sentences on the whiteboard. Besides that, using flash cards in drilling activity also will help
pupils to recognize the correct pronunciation of every word in the phrases and it is also easy
to read and understand by the pupils.
Next teaching material designed for the lesson is worksheets. For this lesson, I had
designed two worksheets for different stages. First, I had designed a worksheet on rebus
writing and the other worksheet is in a table form where pupils need to fill in the table with
their own information guided by the teacher. According to Doyle (2002), worksheets are used
principally to reduce the amount of time students spend copying notes or diagrams from a

board or screen. So instead of pupils taking time copying the tasks, teachers can save up a
lot of time by giving worksheets to pupils and use the time save for discussions and proceed
to the next activity or stage.
All in all, teachers need to be more creative and critical to design and use teaching
materials because good materials used can help teachers to create a positive classroom
environment and vice versa. So, it is a good practice for teacher to wisely use the teaching
materials in assisting their teaching and learning process in order to achieve the objectives
of the lesson. As time goes by, teachers need to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses so
that the teaching materials can be improvise and teaching and learning process will be
consistent and beneficial to pupils.
