The Therapeutic
Encounter
A Cross-modality Approach
David Bott and Pam Howard
both at University of Brighton
This book introduces a cross-modality
approach to the client-therapist encounter,
drawing from humanistic, psychoanalytic,
systemic and integrative approaches.
Chapters introduce a range of client themes
- the refusal to join in, the battle for control, the
emotionally unavailable - and shows how these are enacted in the
relationship. The authors provide a coherent framework within which
to understand both the therapeutic relationship and the principles
of their approach.
Some books are before their time and some are written too
late, but The Therapeutic Encounter is a book 'just intime'

[This book] is both a helpful and
practical guide, encouraging a deep
enquiry into the values that counsellors and
psychotherapists bring to their work and, at the same time,
a source of wisdom in its own right, one that draws on the
evidently rich experience of the authors
Sean Maloney, UKCP Registered
Psychotherapist and Supervisor, and Chair
of Ethics for the Karuna Institute
An exciting and important book which demonstrates that
ethical practice can be - in fact, must be - alive and creative
as well as safe and boundaried
Nick Totton, author of Wild Therapy
Can I be a creative therapist without overstepping boundaries
and risking complaints? Can I practise safely and ethically whilst
remaining true to my humanistic values? This book answers 'yes' by
offering a safety net to trainees and therapists working in the context
of today's 'complaints culture'. Exploring what safe and creative
practice means in relation to the key cornerstones in therapy, the
authors offer practical guidance to assist the reader in reflecting
on and negotiating the challenges of boundaries, legalities and
defensive practice. Creative Ethical Practice in Counselling &
Psychotherapy considers the necessary structures and processes
that must inform creative, humanistic practice for it to be a safe,
ethical therapeutic framework.
Packed with reflective exercises, summaries, case examples and
step-by-step guidance, the book takes the reader from establishing
the therapeutic relationship to worst-case scenarios like complaints
procedures and legal action. It is essential reading for legal and
ethical modules on all counselling courses.

Strengths-Based
Therapy
Connecting Theory, Practice
and Skills
Elsie Jones-Smith Diplomate in
Counseling Psychology, American
Board of Professional Psychology
Strengths Based Therapy is a text
on working with clients through the lens
of positive psychology. It lays a theoretical
foundation to help students and practitioners understand
the grounding and theory behind the approach and then lays out
a model for use with a variety of client types/settings. The book
draws on cutting-edge research on neuroscience, positive emotions,
empowerment and change, and will help students understand how
to get the client engaged as an active participant in their treatment
by assuming the client knows best about what has worked and
has not worked in his/her life. It draws heavily on skill-building
and cognitive behavioural (evidence-based) approaches and first
presents the theory and model and then goes into application via
various clinical illustrations.

encouraging stakeholders to use them. Based on research in
brain science, as well as from the Information Age/Connectivity Age

and leadership to one that collaborates and builds on strengths
with supervisees as competent stakeholders in their work with

Theory & Approaches - Person-Centred Therapy

Working at Relational
Depth in Counselling
and Psychotherapy
Dave Mearns and Mick Cooper
both at University of Strathclyde
Work ing at Relat ional Dept h in
Counselling and Psychotherapy is a
groundbreaking text which goes to the very
heart of the therapeutic meeting between
therapist and client. Focusing on the concept
of 'relational depth', Dave Mearns and Mick Cooper
describe a form of encounter in which therapist and client experience
profound feelings of contact and engagement with each other,
and in which the client has an opportunity to explore whatever is
experienced as most fundamental to her or his existence.
The book represents a 'gentle revolution'. The gentleness
comes from its lack of stridency and from its inclusiveness,
and the radical quality is that person-centred therapy in
particular, and all therapeutic work in general, cannot be
the same again

Practising Mindfully Across

Approaches & Issues

Meg Barker is a Senior

Lecturer in Psychology
at the Open University,
as well as an accredited
psychotherapist practising
at the Lesbian & Gay
Foundation in Manchester.

Meg Barker The Open University

This book breaks new ground by
relating mindfulness to all of the other
therapeutic approaches, across all
the common presenting problems
in counselling and psychotherapy.
Meg Barker responds to our growing
consciousness of mindfulness approaches, considering
how its principles can inform everyday therapeutic work. The book:
covers the ways in which mindfulness approaches complement
each therapeutic approach, as well as any potential conflicts and
tensions that might arise
spells out how a mindfulness approach would understand - and
work with - each of the most common presenting issues, including
depression, anxiety and addiction
suggests possible future directions in mindfulness, including the
potential of mindfulness as a form of self-care.

Hope in Counselling
and Psychotherapy
Denis O'Hara University
of Abertay, Dundee
Keeping theory firmly grounded in real-life
practice, coupled with insights and tools
for developing practitioner research and
reflexivity, this practical book explores the
nature of hope and how it can be defined
as a central dimension of healing and
personal growth. Key content includes:
understanding the nature of hope and how it is conceptualised
from different theoretical perspectives
identifying common psychotherapeutic practices which engender
hope and how they translate into effective practice
the role of the counsellor and how he/she is intricately involved
in the process
how to manage expectations and work effectively with clients
suffering with severe and enduring psychological challenges
hope measures and how to be a research-informed practitioner.

She loves working at

the boundaries between
academia, activism, and
therapy practice, and
brings the three together
in much of her work. Meg
hopes that her books help
unfamiliar people to consider how they can usefully
bring mindfulness into their work, and give people
a thorough and accessible introduction to all of the
different genders, sexualities and relationship styles
that they are likely to come across. Additionally, Meg
does lots of training on mindfulness and on sexuality
and gender and edits the journal Psychology &
Sexuality. Meg co-edited The Bisexuality Report in
2012, which is influencing policy and practice around
bisexuality, and also researches sadomasochism and
non-monogamous relationships.

Existential
Counselling &
Psychotherapy
in Practice
Third Edition
Emmy van Deurzen New School of
Psychotherapy and Counselling, London
Offering a concrete framework and practical
methods for working from an existential perspective,
the bestselling Existential Counselling and Psychotherapy in
Practice is now in its Third Edition. Central to the book is the belief
that many of our problems arise out of the essential paradoxes of
human existence, rather than from personal pathology. From this
perspective, the purpose of counselling and therapy is not viewed
as problem-solving, but as a mean of enabling people to come to
terms with living life as it is, with all its inherent contradictions.
Emmy van Deurzen, a leading existential philosopher and therapist,
presents a practical method of working, using systematic
observation, clarification and reflection to help clients rediscover
their inner strengths. She shows how personal assumptions, values
and talents, once acknowledged, can be turned to constructive use.
Using wide-ranging case examples, the author also demonstrates
the effectiveness of the existential approach in many different
situations - from crisis work to dealing with chronic unhappiness.

how frank's cbt book became zahra's 'second wallet'

One of the fascinating things about books is the way that
they can sometimes seem to cross continents not only
geographically but also in terms of cultural experience. Frank
Wills is an independent psychological therapist living and
working in Bristol. He is one of the pioneering therapists who
helped to introduce cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) to the
UK. A new book, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: Foundations
for Practice (SAGE, 2012) from Frank and his co-author, Diana
Sanders, suggests that it is now time to develop CBT in more
interpersonal and emotionally sensitive directions. Frank says,
'CBT can seem a bit narrow at times. There are good reasons for
this because initially it was focused on clinical trial findings that
necessarily have a narrow focus but I think it is now time to go
for a broader and more nuanced version of the model whilst at
the same time maintaining much of its original parsimony.' Frank
began practicing therapy in 1971 and believes that he is lucky in
the sense that he began working as a therapist before CBT had
appeared and was therefore well used to drawing insights for
his work from a variety of sources. Thus the reader of this book
will enjoy not only a sound guide to current ideas in CBT but also
to related ideas from other traditions such as emotion-focused
and interpersonal therapies. 'Therapy always proceeds within an
interpersonal dimension and CBT has become more reflective
about the significance of this fact,' Frank explains, 'for most
people, lifes best moments come from meaningful interpersonal
exchanges, usually charged with appropriate emotion.'
When a book has been published, the author is traditionally
given a number of complimentary copies to pass on to friends
and supporters. When Frank received his comps his wife Annie
made a special request. She had worked as an Access tutor
Available as inspection copy for lecturers

helping people who had missed out on

the educational system first time round
find their way into Higher Education.
One of her students, Zahra, had been
a refugee from conflict in East Africa
and had shown remarkable resilience
and hard work in progressing on to a
degree programme. After her degree,
she embarked on training in CBT and
then to a job with one of the IAPT
teams in Bristol. Frank was happy
to meet Annies request by sending
a complimentary copy of his book
to Zahra. Only a few days later, he
received an email from Zahra, who was already far enough
into the book to suggest that it had become her second wallet.
Zahra now adds, 'Frank and Diana go the extra mile beyond
theories and offer practical life changing skills via this book.
The book includes many client examples, some of them funny
and some show the therapist as fallible and all too human. This
seems closer to the everyday reality of my work than some of the
other books on therapy I have read. In the country that I came
from, there is not even a word for depression so thinking about
the wider emotional aspects of personal problems has been
very valuable for me.'

Frank

This is Franks tenth experience of writing for SAGE and reflecting

on this, he turns again to his interpersonal theme, 'One reason I
love writing for Sage is that it has always given me great editors
to work with. They are very interpersonally skilled and help one
feel like a valued member of the wider SAGE family of authors.'

question assumptions, evaluate information, formulate hypotheses,
and design solutions to problems of family violence in the United
States. Using an ecological framework, the authors provide an
informative discussion of not only the most well-recognized forms
of maltreatment in families, but also of less understood and more
controversial issues such as husband abuse, parent abuse and gay/

Common

Psychotherapeutic Practice

Group Activities for

Families in Recovery

Edited by Pam James Liverpool John Moores

University and Barbara Douglas
Learning how to work effectively with a broad range of clients and
their presenting issues is a vital part of a career as a therapist,
but engaging with the often conflicting worlds of descriptive
psychopathology and the subjective meanings of the therapist and
client is a real challenge for trainees. They have to develop the skills
and knowledge that allow both approaches - one medical, one
humanistic - to work successfully together.
With the support of expert contributors, Pam James and Barbara
Douglas help students to confidently do just that, providing a
comprehensive introduction to the theory, research and practice
behind a range of common presenting issues. Key issues covered
include anxiety, depression, trauma, bipolar disorder, psychosis,
eating disorders and borderline personality disorder.
This book should be on the desk of every counselling, psychotherapy
and counselling psychology trainee, and is recommended reading
for other practitioners of health and social care working with these
common presetting issues.

This book is intended to help students and

clients integrate the 12-step treatment with
psychotherapy. The book is the first to do so in a systematic
fashion. It covers issues of pre-treatment and then goes into each
step and its purpose. The book discusses obstacles to treatment and
how to incorporate psychotherapy by following a 12-step treatment.
It also covers relapse prevention, a large component of any treatment
program. This book will help bridge the often competing views of
psychotherapy and 12-step treatment and is the first book of its kind
to bring the two approaches together.

Death and Dying

A Reader
Edited by Sarah Earle, Carol
Komaromy and Caroline Bartholomew
all at The Open University
This book draws together a range of both
classic and newly commissioned pieces
on the multidisciplinary study of death
and dying. Organized into five parts, the
book begins with a general exploration of
the meaning of death, before moving on to
consider caring at the end of life. Further readings explore
the moral and ethical dilemmas in the context of death and dying.
The fourth part of the book examines the issue of grief and ritual
after death, while the final part considers some of the issues that
arise when researching in the field of death and dying.
This is the set book for The Open University course Death and
Dying (K260).

Developing Cultural
Humility

A Practical Guide

For many students, the word culture is

synonymous with race and ethnicity.
Yet, a large majority of students who go
into counsellor education programs are
Caucasian. By its very premise, multicultural therapy leaves
out Caucasian individuals, leaving many to believe they have 'no
culture' and feeling disconnected from culture, multiculturalism
and social justice. Culture, as it is beginning to be defined, can be
seen not as a particular race or ethnicity, rather, as the intersections
of multiple identities. Thus, everyone, no matter what their race or
ethnicity, has a culture. This book is the first to deal with culture
more broadly and attempt to help students examine their own
culture. This allows Caucasian trainees to embrace culture and have
a stronger connection to multiculturalism without feeling alienated
from the discussion.

Embracing Race, Privilege

and Power
Edited by Miguel E Gallardo
Pepperdine University, USA

Christina Richards West London

Mental Health NHS Trust and Meg
Barker The Open University
In the past, sexuality and gender have been regarded as a niche
area of Counselling and Psychologicial Studies. In this important
text, Christina Richards and Meg Barker dispel that notion by
providing a comprehensive guide to sexuality and gender issues for
Counsellors and Psychologists. The book provides an understanding
of the conceptualisation of sexuality and gender and explains its
inevitable relevance in every client and therapist situation. The
book is a practical guide that takes its readers through the various
classifications of sexuality and gender and explains the common
experiences and issues related to these classifications. The
book contains:
explanations of various classifications of sexuality and gender
common concerns relating to specific groups
key practises relating to specific groups
the treatment of specific groups in contemporary western society
details some rules and ideals that are commonly found within
specific groups
key aspects that practitioners should be aware of and their
implications for good professional practise.
The pluralistic approach adopted in the book means that it is relevant
to practitioners from all theoretical approaches. This is a vital text
for psychotherapists, counsellors and applied psychologists who
will find themselves engaging with issues of sexuality and gender
throughout their practise.

Third Edition is pedagogically driven,
interactive, and highly applied to engage and motivate
students taking what is often considered a 'drudge' requirement.
This brief and basic introduction to research methods in psychology
is presented in a relaxed style, at a moderate level of detail, and
with a rich mix of pedagogy to engage and motivate students from
a variety of backgrounds and academic preparation.
The authors focus on applying concepts students are learning, and
emphasize doing research with simple in-text exercises that provide
a more interactive feel than found in most methods textbooks. They
also provide examples of real psychology research, both from the
research literature and, uniquely, from student research projects.
This friendly and supportive presentation of the basics conveys
to students the excitement and fun of the research enterprise and
involves them in 'doing' research, not just memorizing another term
for an exam.

Counselling

An Introduction
to Research in
Counselling and
Psychotherapy

Edited by Graham Bright Teesside

University and Gill Harrison
Many counselling courses have a strong
research element built into the modules
and students are expected to gain a
thorough understanding of research issues
early on in their studies. This accessible and
practical textbook will demystify research and make it
relevant to counselling practice. There are sections on linking clinical
practice to research, developing 'curiosity' and engaging with the
data. The book uses clinical practice as a basis for understanding
research, and makes connections between the activity of therapy
and the research process.

Psychotherapy
Second Edition
John McLeod University
of Abertay Dundee
The need to show how and why counselling
works has led to an explosion of research
activity and a growing focus on research in
counselling and psychotherapy teaching and practice.
Yet this book, even now in its Second Edition, stands alone in
addressing qualitative research in therapy. Examples from actual
research studies are given to show how the methods work in
practice. This new edition incorporates developments in qualitative
research over the last 10 years and includes eight new chapters,
covering:
interpretative phenomenological analysis
auto-ethnographic methods
action research
case study methods.
Once again, John McLeod has created a wonderful resource

Cultural Sociology
ofDivorce
An Encyclopedia
Edited by Robert E Emery
University of Virginia, USA
While the formal definition of divorce may
be concise and straightforward (legal
termination of a marital union, dissolving
bonds of matrimony between parties), the
effects are anything but, particularly when
children are involved. The Americans for Divorce Reform
estimates that '40 or possibly even 50 percent of marriages will end
in divorce if current trends continue.'
This multi-disciplinary Encyclopedia covers curricular subjects
related to divorce as examined by disciplines ranging from
marriage and the family, to anthropology, social and legal history,
developmental and clinical psychology, and religion, all through a
lens of cultural sociology
