February/March 2015

Letter from Alyssa Santos, Exalted Ruler

Happy 2015 fellow Elks,
The past two months we have had quite a full lodge calendar. December we had our Elks Memorial, Annual tree trimming and
holiday potluck a, quarterly visit to the VA Hospital in Long Beach, Holiday Bash, Kids Christmas Party and our New Year's
Eve Party. January brought our Sunday breakfast, District Hoop Shoot at Staples Center , cook your own steak night , fish fry
and as of this writing a bus trip to Viejas Casino and our-Super Bowl party. Thank you to each and everyone who helped
make these events happen.
February and March are busy as well. Mark your calendars... February we have the popular Dancing through the Decades
Disco Night, CHEA State President Floyd "Skip" Henke's South Central Coast District visit, and our lodges 61st birthday
celebration in addition to our regular weekly and monthly events.
March we have a dinner and dedication of space within the lodge for our own James Mason, CHEA Past State President .
After this celebration we will have the last party of the 2014-2015 year. , complete with Appetizers, DJ and Dancing .
Please see the flyers here in the Elkshorn and join in the fun. Installation of the 2015-2016 Officers will be the last Wednesday
of the month.
As our 2014-2015 Elk year comes to an end I would like to thank you, the members for placing your trust in me to serve as
Exalted Ruler. Thank you to the seventeen officers that took on active roles as leaders of this lodge. I would like to
acknowledge the following people for their unending guidance and support: Marsha Aguon, First Lady, Ector Espinoza, PER
-my advisor, Judy Sutton PER, Rodney Tanaka, PER, Gina Ayers, Yolanda Wu, Jim Wilson, PER, Bob Mullikin, Jenifer
Cervantes ,John Sutton ,PDDGER, Anna & Marie Pacheco and especially to Reyne Rocha ,PER who is my link to the Elks .
This year we had many repairs that were necessary. The new lodge chairs have been delivered. Thanks to the volunteers
who came on short notice to take care of the delivery. We are awaiting new lodge hall chairs and new drapery for the stage.
We are a work In progress that I know will continue.
As a member of this lodge you should be proud that have we continue to serve our community, the Veterans, support our
members as they raise awareness and money for various charities, and that people are taking note more than ever ,how
much we do as Elks. .
As this year winds down, I thank you again and my hope is that perhaps a rekindling within will prompt you to become active
with the lodge in 2015-2016.
Fraternally,
Alyssa Santos
Exalted Ruler 2014-2015

What an amazing year weve had at our lodge. We had an

awesome time at our Tree Trimming Party and nice cup of
Tom and Jerry. We had some fun parties where people
danced the night away! Our Children's Christmas Party had a
great turn out. The smiles on the children's faces said it all.
They had a great time at the arts and crafts table, getting their
faces painted, and receiving balloons with some amazing
creations. I'd like to thank the Emblems for all that they do;
making cookies, preparing the cookie designing table, and
making the goodie bags for the children. Id like to thank my
wife, Ruthy Almaraz, for all her hard work on the Christmas
party, together with all the wrapping elves and party elves
that helped make it a success. A very special Thank You!
to Mr. and Mrs. Claus, for making the kids smile. We had a
great time at our New Years Party! The music was great, and
everyone got up to dance.
A couple of SHOUT-OUTS to Myles, who did a great job
with the Turkey Shoot! another way for our members to
have fun during our meetings. To Francisco Cacheo, who did
an outstanding job with Hoop Shoot! going from park to
park and ending up at the Staples Center before the Clippers
game. The kids had a great time and looked good wearing
the Gardena Elks t-shirt.
If you don't like to cook, join us for breakfast every 2nd
Sunday of the month / fish fry every 2nd and 4th Friday of the
month, burger nights on Tuesdays, and dinner before the
meetings on Wednesdays.
st
On March 21 , we will be having our ERs last Fez Party. In
addition, we will be honoring one of our very own, James
Mason, and after that in the same evening, our ERs FADE
OUT PARTY. Let's show her our appreciation with a large
turnout.
Feb. 11 we will be having our 1st nominations, and on Feb
th
18 , our 2nd nominations for chair officers for 2015/2016. If
you'd like to help out our lodge, please reach out to me, I
would love to hear from you and know what you would like to
do for our lodge in the coming year.
Save the Date: March 25 will be the installation of your new
lodge officers.

I hope everyone had a great

Christmas and New Years.
Now it's time to start 2015.
We have a lot going on
before the end of the Elk
year, So please mark your
calanders and join us for all
the fun there is to be had. We
have our regular, Tuesday
night burger night, fish frys
and cook your own steak
night as well as Sunday
breakfast the second Sunday
of every month. So don't
forget to join us and bring the
whole family. We also have a
few events happening like
Super Bowl and the Disco
party. Get your tickets and
come have a great time. Also
we are always looking for
volunteers to help us with
these events so please talk to
any one of the officers if you
would be able to help in any
way. We always appreciate
your time and help to make
Gardena the friendly lodge.

Well my fellow Elks it

was a good year and
I really enjoyed the
time I was able to
share with you all as
your lecturing knight.
I would like to thank
all those individuals
for the help and
support in filling our
local food bank over
the holidays and
please continue to
help restock those
selves, please come
out and support our
upcoming Elks event
these next two
months, remember
our Disco night event
and our lodge
birthday bash as our
lodge turns one year
older. Just a
reminder to join us
on that one Sunday
a month for our
breakfast, join us on
Tuesdays for
hamburger night,
come on out for fish
fries. Don't forget to
help us choose our
new leadership for
the next year.

ENF NEWS - Feb/Mar 2015

Welcome to the final quarter of this Elk year, which ends March 31, 2015. Time flies
when we are having so much fun!
ENF is a good charitable investment. Members who have donated this year should be rightly proud that as a result of
your generosity, Gardena #1919 has achieved the GER per capita goal of $4.60, and has qualified for the $2000
Gratitude Grant.
Gratitude Grants offer an opportunity for Elks to think about how best to serve their community and make it
stronger. Gratitude Grants are the ENF's way of saying thank you to every Lodge that meets the GERs permember goal for giving to the ENF each Elk year. If you are aware of an opportunity to serve our community and
to make it stronger through Elks Led programs, please contact me. We hope to serve more than just one community
need with Grants this year.
When you give to the Elks National Foundation, youre doing more than funding the Elks National Drug Awareness
and Hoop Shoot programs. Youre doing more than supporting the Community Investments Program and providing
Emergency Educational Grants to the children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. Youre doing more than
maintaining the Elks Veterans Memorial. Youre doing all that, and youre supporting Elkdom in your state.
During the 2013-14 Lodge year, the Elks of California-Hawaii donated $802,677.63 to the Elks National Foundation.
This year, the Foundation will give back the following:
State Charities Grant: $587,620.0
Special Projects Grant: $445,970.00
Bonus Grant: $139,670.0
Most Valuable Student: $284,000.00
Legacy Award: $92,000.00
National Veterans Service
Commission: $39,900.00
Grand Total given back: $1,589,160.00
Thats a ratio of $1.98 for every dollar the Foundation received from your state last year. And that doesnt even
include the money Lodges in your state will get back through our Community Investments Program. For the 2011-12
fiscal year, for example, we awarded a total of $362,990.00 to one hundred twenty California-Hawaii Lodges.
If you haven't contributed to ENF yet, it isnt too late!
The quickest ways to get credit for your donation this year is to:
1. Go to Elks.org and select ENF -> Ways to Give
a. You can make a one-time donation right away.
b. Check to see if your employer matches your donation, doubling its value!
c. Consider joining the Fidelity Club, where you can set up a monthly donation and earn some unique
recognition.
2. Or you can drop a check off at the office to be credited in your name.
a. Be sure to get a red heart sticker on your card!
REMEMBER ENF is an annual donation program. Many members like to receive recognition for consecutive
membership years. Ill be contacting members who are in danger of lapsing by missing this year, or be sure to contact
me at a meeting if you arent sure.
**When you include donations with your membership renewal, many people confuse ENF and Major Projects (Purple
Pig). Please indicate your donations clearly when you return your dues to the office.
-Tish McCauley, ENF Chairperson
