Violation Type: Willful

Violation 1 Item 1
WAC 296-823-11010

The employer did not establish a written expsoure control plan (ECP) for bloodborne pathogens as required by
this standard. Upon inspection, the employer did not have an ECP on site and requested the CSHO provide the
one that DOSH had on file.
Motel 6 employees are exposed to bloodborne pathogens via blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially
infectious material (OPIM). No ECP program, designed to eliminate or minimize employee exposure, was in
effect.
An effectively established and implemented exposure control plan reduces employee exposure to bloodborne
pathogens and is reviewed and updated annually. Exposure to infected blood or other potentially infectious
material can result in contracting an infectious disease such as HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C. These diseases
can cause permanent disability and death.
The following additional correction documentation is required for this violation: Finalized
Exposure Control Plan with the following included:
Bloodborne Pathogen training will be conducted before new employees begin work and
annually thereafter.
Hepatitis B vaccination series will be offered within 10 days of hire.
Sharps container management - when to tell they are full and need turning in for new
containers.
Information to be sent to health care professional in the event of a sharps exposure.
Procedures for maintaining sharps injury log.

Violation Type: Willful

Violation 1 Item 2
WAC 296-823-12005

The employer did not provide bloodborne pathogen (BBP) training that included all tasks which affect
occupational exposure.
Motel 6 employees are exposed to bloodborne pathogens via blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially
infectious material (OPIM). No bloodborne pathogen training program was in effect that was designed to
eliminate or minimize employee exposure.
An effective BBP training program reduces employee exposures to bloodborne pathogens. Exposure to infected
blood or other potentially infectious material can result in contracting an infectious disease such as HIV,
Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C. These diseases can cause permanent disability and death.
This violation was corrected during the inspection.
Assessed penalty:
$27,500.00

Violation Type: Willful

Violation 1 Item 3
WAC 296-823-13005

The employer did not make hepatitis B vaccines (HBV) available to employees with exposure to bloodborne
pathogens.
Motel 6 employees are exposed to bloodborne pathogens via blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially
infectious material (OPIM). At the time of the inspection, several employees had not been offered the hepatitis
B vaccination series.
Exposure to infected blood can result in contracting Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused
by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). For some people, hepatitis B infection becomes chronic, leading to liver failure,
liver cancer, or cirrhosis a condition that causes permanent scarring of the liver.
This violation was corrected during the inspection.
Assessed penalty:
$27,500.00

Violation Type: Willful

Violation 1 Item 4
WAC 296-823-14060
The employer did not handle regulated waste safely.

Maintenance and cleaning employees encounter and dispose of needles and other potentially infectious material
(OPIM) when cleaning rooms. They did not have safe containers for disposal of needles and sharps. Most
sharps containers were broken and/or full.
Exposure to infected blood or other potentially infectious material can result in contracting an infectious disease
such as HIV or Hepatitis B. These diseases can cause permanent disability and death.
This violation was corrected during the inspection.
Assessed penalty:
$27,500.00

Violation Type: Repeat Serious

Violation 2 Item 1
WAC 296-800-17030

The employer did not inform and train employees about the hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
At the time of the inspection, employees were using Clorox in the laundry room. Clorox is corrosive and may
cause severe irritation or damage to the eyes and skin.
Exposure to chemicals in the workplace can be controlled through a properly developed and implemented
Hazard Communication training program. Training increases employees' awareness of specific hazards in their
workplace and of the required control measures to be employed.
The violation above is cited as a third time repeat of 1) Violation #1, Item #2, cited on
Citation and Notice #314954918 issued on 11/29/2011 and 2) Violation #2, Item #1,
cited on Citation and Notice #316342021 issued on 08/14/2014.
