Question: What's the difference between the wsHttp & basicHttpBinding versus webHttpBinding? I don't think you
mentioned webHttpBinding, but I've used webHttpBinding in a service (based on a copy&paste from a sample) and it
works nicely. Am I missing something that the other bindings would give me (scoping it to http communication of

Answer: WebHttpBinding allows you to use "Plain Old XML" (POX) over HTTP rather than soap as a message
format. BasicHttpBinding and WSHttpBinding both do SOAP over HTTP by default.

Question: What is the difference between on premise and off premise? It's never explained clearly. What I think the
difference is, is that "on premise" is "locally hosted in your company or your company's datacenter" and "off premise"

Question: SQL Azure supports filestreamm?
Answer: Not currently. A full list of supported data types is at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/enus/library/windowsazure/ee336233.aspx

10:44:36 PDT
Question: is there support for websockets?
Answer: Recently added support for web sockets on azure websites
http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2012/10/25/net-4-5-now-supported-with-windows-azure-web-sites.aspx

10:47:37 PDT
Question: If I deploy two services - is there an address that they can use to communicate together within Azure,
which is not public - also not public to other peoples azure services and webapps?
Answer: virtual machines (both PaaS and IaaS) can directly address each other within the cloud service container or
across containers by using Azure Virtual Network. However, if you want to leverage the Azure Load Balancer, you
need to declare a public endpoint and then properly secure the service against unwanted traffic.

10:49:01 PDT
Question: My azure $200 credit expired before I got to use it. But, I do have a $50 credit a month. I am using the free
web site service. My question is...I'd like to play around a bit and start a virtual machine. Will I be charged if I create
one? Would the $50 a month credit cover that? Thank you.
Answer: The $50 credit should cover any services, including an IaaS VM. just be aware of the costs associated with
that VM so you don't exceed your credit amount unexpected.

10:55:33 PDT
Question: Is there a way to deallocate a VM to not bill (sort of like a VM pause)?
Answer: By default, if you stop an IaaS VM from the management portal, it will end up as "stopped (deallocated) and
therefore not be billable.

10:56:42 PDT
Question: Hi Brent. This is awesome. Can you share the link to the samples you are using? Thanks
Answer: That's probably a question for Bret (not me).
But there's also a ton of great samples, labs, and articles
up at: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/

10:57:39 PDT
Question: awesome... that's new... the default was just stopped before
Answer: This changed in June of this year as part of our IaaS launch enhancements. Just keep in mind that the
deallocated state is currently specific to IaaS. For PaaS, you still need to delete the deployment to stop being billed.

Question: A little late but good morning (evening) from Dublin Ireland.
Answer: Welcome to the Jump Start Vincero. Was in Dublin a couple weeks ago. Great city you have there.

11:03:58 PDT
Question: Can they connect to an Azure Ubuntu VM remotely? if so, can they do an example of it
Answer: yes, you can remote into an IaaS VM either Linux (via SSH), or Windows (remote desktop). Here is a
walkthrough of using SSH: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/manage/linux/how-to-guides/ssh-into-linux/

11:06:18 PDT
Question: When using load-balanced endpoints in a cloud service (with multiple PaasS or IaaS instances on the
back-end) are the sessions sticky? Doesn't seem to be any config options available.
Answer: No, the Windows Azure load balancer doesn't support any type of session affinity. However, there are ways
around. Internally, we use ARR to provide client session affinity via cookies for Windows Azure Web Sites (which is
hosted on PaaS)

11:08:17 PDT
Question:
> Quoted question: Does MS have free cloud site with softwares where one can learn programming? Ricky Brundritt
replied privately: Hi Ashok, you can create a free trial account for Azure. There are tons of great development
resources available here: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/
Answer: There's also our virtual labs at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/aa570323.aspx

Question: I currently have a 1GB DB on my MSDN Azure acct. It got setup in Asia. woops. Can I remove all
instances of my DBs (there are 2) and then create one in the right location?
Answer: Yes. You'll just need to it manually since the SQL Azure DB copy doesn't support copies between subregions (datacenters).

11:16:48 PDT
Question: Question about Azure Account.... i do keep reading about the Free Azure account for 1month , and scaling
option, is it different from the first 10websites that are free ??
Answer: The account is a subscription that runs free for 30 days. Any subscription includes the 10 free web sites.
You can convert the 30-day free trial subscription to an ongoing subscription at the end of the trial period if you want
to keep using the free website features.

Question: When starting a WCF Cloud Service, all works and deploy is OK (Both staging and production), but when
trying to consume from a client I don't see the WSDL! Do I have to manually add that to the config? Strange since
locally the WSDL displays as expected. On Azure it looks as follows: http://un.cloudapp.net/SIOCcore.svc Try and
click on the wsdl.
Answer: I clicked on your link, then clicked on the link on that page to get the WSDL. Worked fine for me.
http://un.cloudapp.net/SIOCcore.svc?singleWsdl

11:35:57 PDT
Question: We were shown we can scale out webroles/workerroles with a click. Is that not possible with the webapps
that Bret started out with deploying?
Answer: Yes Web Sites can be scaled out as well. But not at the "free" tier (if memory serves), At the shared tier you
can do multiple threads, and at the dedicated tier with multiple VM instances.

11:37:08 PDT
Question: Hello! I have a question re: service / api types. I've written a couple of Mobile Services node APIs recently,
so far only for data access and password hashing etc. But it seems a lot simpler than what is being demo'd tonight?
And as I understand it these are available to be consumed by both mobile apps and websites. When should one
service type be used over the other? e.g. why use WCF or web api if a simple node api does the job? It's a bit
confusing and there seems to be very little documentation available on the mobile services api option? I'm worried
I've missed something fundamental about architecture here!? Thanks
Answer: Mobile Services are another feature of the Windows Azure Platform, but not a focus for today's jump start.
Like all the features, they have different use cases that are the "sweet spot" for them.

Question: In my question i mean thre relations in tables
Answer: this will depend on the type of storage you are using. if you choose MySQL or Windows Azure SQL
Database, you can always use existing tools to directly access the databases and visualize the relationships between
tables.

11:46:21 PDT
Question: It states unhealthy. Will try to follow the "WebSite" deployment instead of the WCF cloud Service project.
Hopefully this is simpler.
Answer: You can try remoting into the PaaS cloud service instances to see if there are any details in the event log, or
when calling the service locally that will help you identify what may be causing the issue. One frequent cause is
missing assemblies.

11:52:06 PDT
Question: @Assellbergs You can debug your cloud service now using Visual Studio. Setup IntelliTrace in the
publishing settings as well, that will give you lots of information's about your deployed service.

preventing the application from initializing.

changes/innovations/enhancements.

11:57:43 PDT
Question: So staying current wi th cloud is the best route
Answer: While a cert may help you get a job, staying current will help ensure you're as productive as possible.

Question: Why is dataReader.GetInt32(0) "better" than dataReader.GetInt32("ID")?
Answer: If memory serves, it has to do with the internal hashtable lookup that translates "ID" = 0.

13:26:00 PDT
Question: Is there some free pdf books of Windows azure for download?
Answer: You should check the MS Press blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/microsoft_press/

Question: Is there also talking / sheets about webAPI? Particularly interested in that.
Answer: hey hkui! You could try this as a tutorial to start out http://www.windowsazure.com/enus/develop/net/tutorials/rest-service-using-web-api/

13:30:27 PDT
Question: Already figured it would be something like that. But I might have missed something else. Thanks for the
answer. Personally, I'll go for "ID", since that's actually clear and readable. It will probably be about milliseconds, or
maybe even 1 millisecond.
Answer: Some folks create constants that they get the best of both worlds.

Question: Can you provide any links. I am a SQL DBA and I need to first try SQL Azure before we actually go fullfledged on the cloud. I have my On-premise environment setup already in SQL 2012 Ent!
Answer: @Soham Unfortunately I don't track all the local community events. That said, signing up for a single small
Azure SQL Database for testing purposes would be approximately $10 a month. You'd likely spend more on
gas/petro to/from a community event.

13:44:37 PDT
Question: This is very off-topic, but I have WP8 app with panorama view connected to mobile service/DB in azure. I
ran into trouble because the panorama view is loaded so fast that the data collections do not exist, and binding fails.
Is there a tutorial/example to refresh the view and binding once the async data loading is complete?
Answer: Hey Sopuli! Have you tried using a BackgroundWorker or Async Tasks? You can try a BackgroundWorker
first: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsphone/develop/cc221403(v=vs.105).aspx

14:59:36 PDT

15:54:15 PDT
Question: QUESTION: Bret , Is EntityFramework 6.0 more appropriate to .NET4.0 ? Why ?
Answer: @Andre_Abrantes, EF 6 is actually more backword compatible than EF 5.0. Look for Rowan Millers TechEd
presentation videos. He explains it better there.

16:06:38 PDT
Question: are there going to be cuts on this video after you uploaded it? or we can see everything that was
discussed?
Answer: We cut out very little. Mostly we edit it to cleanly break each hour into a single module on MVA.
