Field Report
Outreach International workers are in

China, Africa. Jamaica, & the Fiji islands

The Bamboo Curtain Tears
"A first! Praise God for this open door!"
The China Bible Mission team, Sonja and Karen Hamilton, returned from the Easter

Week holiday visit to Mainland China with exciting news! Going in with Wing Wong and
students from the Chinese Christian Seminary from Hong Kong, the girls were able to
distribute Bibles in the local language and were able to meet for the first time with 70 Chinese

people in the village where friends are located in a work project. Seventy peopie came to the
small home meeting and crowded in to hear the Gospelior the first time! This is what we had
prayed for and the Lord has poured out His answer. Many came to Christ and the others

wanted more teaching and have invited the team back again to continue sharing this
message of Hope and Salvation. We thank you all for your prayers and financial help.
Please contact us for more detailed information on this project. We work with Hong Kong
Christian Mission.

East Africa
"Two people there now; more to follow soon, Lord willing (James 4:15)!"
Phil and Pat York report that they will be allowed to begin a vocational training school
near the Kitale, Kenya, area. This will give them evangelistic opportunities with many village
people who are yet to hear the Gospel. Praise the Lord for this! Their address is Box 900.
Kitale, Kenya.

We hear that the government of Uganda is stabilizing again and workers can return

there. We are expecting our team of recruits for the summer to enter Uganda, Pat Allen and

Jacques Blackwell, will go in early June. Lord willing, and our recruits for summer training
(six volunteers from the states) will join them around the 12th of June for 60 days of
evangelism in schools and villages in Kenya and Uganda. I plan to go on this internship,
also, to investigate registration possibilities again in Kenya and check on work in Uganda.
Financial support for this trip is needed now! Please use our Tennessee address.

South Africa
"Two workers & two more on the way!"

Pete and Fran Laughren are working hard in Capetown, South Africa, and visiting
many areas where villages and located churches are needing more Bible teaching. Pete is
chairman of the Church of Christ Mission 30 AD. in place of Al Zimmerman, who has returned

with his wife. Jean, on furlough. Pray for th^m during this time in South Africa's period of
unrest. Jonathan
join the work in Kimberly at the end
of the year, or when support is sufficient!

Stateside Recruitment
Since we have been in the states, two couples have reached the foreign field and one
single worker is in Jamaica. Mike Riddle and the Deruy's are also raising support for

long-term work and several people are planning to be with us for the summer internship.
Mike Riddle is joining the Outreach International team for the '86 summer internship in
Kenya and for further work during the following year. Youth ministry has become a very
important part of the ministry in East Africa, and Mike can make a valuable contribution to our
effort in this area. If you would like to help him with support (about $1500 air fare and $500
per month support), please contact him at the following address: Mike Riddle, P. O. Box
13116, Knoxville, TN 37920. He would be happy to come and speak to your church.
Bob and Maxine Deruy are presently finishing their discipleship program in Limestone,
Tennessee, and are hoping to leave for Maiani, Kenya, in May, when their son, Joey, is out of
school. Their air fare and most of the money for their automobile has been raised, but they
are still short of their goal of $800 monthly support. Their position as teachers in the Maiani
secondary school is confirmed and the doors are open to their work of evangelism and
teaching the Christians already there. They will be entering a five year contract with the
school system, giving them time to build relationships with the students and people of the
Maiani community. If you can help with their support, or if you want to know more about their
work, please contact them at this address: Bob & Maxine Deruy, Rt. 1, Box 45, Limestone, TN
37681. They will be available to speak to you or your congregation until their departure date.

Jamaica
Craig Koble recently returned from Jamaica and hopes to join the team in East Africa
for the summer internship this year. The work continues in Jamaica under the direction of the
local Christians. Jacques BlackwellwWl join Pat Allen in East Africa for the summer, also.

A Last Word about Hona Kona

Let me share with you part of a letter from Wing Wong, dated April 7th. I think it will
help you understand the significance of this open door into China:
Al, this last Shenzhen trip has confirmed several things that might Interest you. First, many young
Christian people are interested in spreading the Gospel in China, but they did not know how. They need leaders
and training. Second, it gives us more freedom and opportunity while there are Americans on the team. Ifyour
girls and Norm were not there the other day when we had the evangelistic meeting, I think the Communist party
members might not be so polite to us. We could hold such a meeting in China because of Norm's special
position. Third, people in China are thirsty of the Gospel. They listen well. Fourth. Communists are not really
that tough to deal with. Ithink many Christians are defeated by their own fear. Afterall, our Lord has been with us
all the way and we believe that He Is able to carry us through any circumstances.
May you continue to pray for the direction of the Lord that you may come back and take the teams to
spread the Gospel in China. You can go Into China to make the necessary connections and explore to
opportunities. I can organize and train the team to go in with you just like what we did on Easter. I believe we can

start a lot of fire in China. At the meantime, you may seek out for Christian business men who might be working in
China in the near future. May God bless you as you are willing to serve Him as He leads.

Pray for us and for those who work with us in the cause of Christ!

Dear Joy,

Thank you for your letter of March 24, I have been in

EAst Africa for the summer and just returned. We had 10 interns
for the summer in Uganda and East Kenya, about 35 people were
baptized in Uganda and a new church of 120 people are now meeting
in Misikhu village of Bungoma district of Kenya near the Uganda
border.
I t was a fruitful summer, we thank God for the victories.
We are looking for workers for that area in Kenya and
if you would announce that for us in your news depattment we would
appreciate it,
enclosed are some news items about the rest of the
family, Jonathan plans to go to Kimberley South Africa to help
Roland Joseph in youth ministry and without any other missionary
there he will be busy no doubt. Lord willing. And Karen and Sonja
are studying Chinese langauge and working in Hong Kong with regular
trips into Mainland China. Frances and her husband Pete are working
in Capetown replacing Al and Jean Zimmerman there. Pete and Fran
had to come home last week due to the sudden death of Pete's father,
Chester Laughren, who was fatally injured in an auto accident in
Atlanta , Ga. Perhaps this news will be entered into a forthcoming

issue of Horizons.
Annette and I are praying for a sponsoring
church to send us back overseas. Lord willing, we would like you
to announce that we are ready in Jan. 87, Lord wil-ing we live, to
return to the mission field, but need a sending church for our
living link. We (as you know) have a lot of experience in recruiting
and in establishing new mission work, so please help us in this
news item also.. The kids all have their sponsorship except Jonathan
is still waiting for some more living link support. We do appreciate
your work there, and our address here in the states is the Tenn. address
