MANILA, Aug. 19 — A US-based Filipino dancer and choreographer has been named finalist in the
“Outstanding Individual Performance” category of the coveted Metro DC Dance Award of
Washington, District of Columbia (DC). He will receive the prize at the Kennedy Center on
September 14.
The recognition of Jason Ignacio has thus drawn attention to the world premiere of his work, “The
Mountain,” which will be performed at the John F. Kennedy Center, one of two works commissioned
by the JFK Center for performances this year under its Performing Arts for Everyone and the

The Kennedy Center describes “The Mountain” as a work that “focuses on Filipino culture,
environmental preservation, and the need for economic moderation.”
“The Mountain” premieres on Sept. 10 and 11, with support by the City Dance Ensemble in
Washington and the Philippine embassy.
“The Mountain” draws inspiration from Ignacio’s dance background, having been born, raised and
trained in the Philippines.
According to the Philippine embassy in Washington, Ignacio’s work was inspired by two mountains in
the Philippines -– the Mt. Pinatubo, which erupted in 1991, and a Metro Manila landfill known as
Smokey Mountain.
Ignacio said he is hopeful that the use of Mt. Pinatubo and Smokey Mountain as central figures in his
dance will help make people realize the need to care for the environment.
He collaborated with physicist Domenico Vicinanza, in which the score incorporates music made
from the seismic rumblings of active volcanoes.
Ignacio previously received the 2009 DC Mayor’s Arts Awards for “Outstanding Emerging Artist.”
