Part-1: Refrigeration
1. Fundamentals:Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Fluid mechanics
2. Vapour compression refrigeration systems:Ideal VCR, actual VCR,
effect of condenser temperature on system performance, effect of
evaporator temperature on system performance, effect of compressor
isentropic

efficiency

on

system

performance,

multistage

vapour

compression systems.
3. Refrigerants:Refrigerant properties, refrigerant performance, safety,
leak detection, effect on construction materials.
4. Components

of

refrigeration

systems:Compressor,

condenser,

evaporator, expansion devices.


5. Vapour absorption refrigeration systems:LiBr-H2O systems, H2ONH3 systems.

Part 2: Air Conditioning


6. Properties of moist air (psychrometry): Methods for estimating moist
air properties, important psychrometric properties, relations between
psychrometric properties, psychrometric chart, use of psychrometric
charts.
7. Psychrometric Processes: Sensible cooling and heating, humidification
and

dehumidification,

cooling

and

dehumidification,

heating

and

humidification, psychrometric calculations for simple air-conditioning


systems.
8. Air conditioning systems for comfort:Thermal comfort. Heat transfer
from human body by sensible and latent heat transfer. metabolic heat
generation, steady state and unsteady state model for heat transfer,
effect of clothing and definition of effective temperatures. ASHRAE
comfort

chart,inside

and

outside

design

conditions,

summer

air

conditioning systems, winter air conditioning systems, all year air


conditioning systems.

9. Infiltration

and

IAQ:Infiltration,

infiltration

due

to

stack

effect,

temperature difference and wind velocity, air change and crack length
methods for estimating infiltration, infiltration due to door openings,
indoor air quality (IAQ), sources of indoor air pollution, methods of control
of IAQ, fresh air requirements for ventilation and IAQ

Heating and Cooling load calculations: Differences between winter

and summer load calculations, solar radiation, SHGF and shading


coefficients, heat transfer through building structure, thermal resistance
of various building materials, winter heating load calculations, summer
cooling load calculations.

Air conditioning systems: All air systems, all water systems, air

water systems, unitary systems, window air conditioners.

Fan and Duct systems:Frictional pressure drops in straight ducts of

circular and rectangular cross-section, equivalent diameter for rectangular


duct, Pressure losses in fittings, due to sudden enlargements, contractions
etc., sizing of ducts (Velocity Reduction method, Equal friction method,
Static Regain method), selection of fans, fan laws and fan characteristic
curves, air distribution in rooms, selection and location of supply and
return grills, diffusers.
