Director of Government and Community Relations

NEW HORIZON ACADEMY


Family-owned and operated New Horizon Academy, with 65 high quality programs in
Minnesota and 4 in Idaho, is seeking a Director of Government and Community
Relations. The individual who fills this role will be an advocate for all aspects of
early childhood education, including a focus on increased funding streams, licensing
rules, and legislative initiatives. The Director of Government and Community
Relations will report to both our CEO and Executive Vice President on key issues
affecting the early childhood education industry.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Formulate, implement, and/or track legislative and other policy initiatives and
strategies regarding and representing specific issues of interest for early
childhood education.
Develop and maintain relationships, and serve as the principle liaison for New
Horizon Academy with local, state and federal policy makers, staff, and
administration officials.
Advise, implement, and participate in coalitions; act as the liaison to a variety
of advocacy groups and community organizations that advance the mission
of New Horizon Academy.
Serve as New Horizon Academys primary contact with Parent Aware and the
MN Professional Development Registry.
Organize and participate in outreach to local, state and federal officials,
including
facility
tours,
issue
briefings,
and
participation
in
legislative/advocacy committee meetings. Testify, whenever needed, on
behalf of New Horizon Academy and the early childhood community, overall.
Coordinate and oversee the implementation of advocacy projects on behalf of
New Horizon Academy.
Seek out opportunities for potential involvement on the national advocacy
level (NAEYC, Early Care and Education Consortium, etc.).
REQUIRED SKILLS
Bachelors Degree in public policy, public administration, early childhood
education, or closely related field; Advanced degree preferred.
A demonstrated interest in public policy or advocacy, and at least two years
of leadership experience in early childhood education or a closely related
field.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to
prepare and deliver presentations to a wide variety of audiences. Comfort
with public speaking is a must.
Strong organization, prioritization, and time management skills.
Flexible, with ability to rapidly adjust to changing circumstances, and work
extended hours during the legislative session.

Ability to gain certification as a trainer through the MN Professional


Development Registry (highly desired)
Ability to travel; approximately 20 days per year.
