Scope of Document
This document presents the pre-commissioning philosophy for the onshore and offshore sections of
the CO2 pipeline from the Kingsnorth Power Station to the Hewett field. Figure 1-1 is an outline
schematic of the overall system.

System of Units
Units to be used throughout the FEED design are defined in ref. [M30], Overall Project Units.
During the injection and production regimes, the CO2 may exist in the gas, liquid or dense phases
with varying densities. As a result, the flow rate in this report is given in tonne/day and Mt/year
(as opposed to MMscmd). Specific assumptions made to adapt this mass flow rate to its equivalent
volume flow rate will be clearly stated in the relevant reports.
1.5
All pre-commissioning activities shall be performed in accordance with E.Ons quality, health, safety
and environmental (QHSE) requirements. Reference [M25] and [M29] present quality and HSE
objectives for Phase 1 of the project.

Assumptions
Currently there is no allowance for an SSIV close to the platform;
There may be one mid line safety valve in the onshore section of pipeline (HOLD 2);
All free water must be demonstrated to have been removed from the pipeline before CO 2
can be introduced and also before valves and fittings are fitted. Therefore, commissioning of
the line shall be done immediately after final drying. Otherwise it is advised to carry out a
second dewatering run using bi-directional pig and minimum of 2 foam pigs driven by air.
This operation is to continue until the pigs arrive free of water (foam pig is fully dry);
Drying of the pipeline will use resources available from the power station (to drive gauging
pigs, methanol slugs etc.);
Final drying of the onshore section can be by air or vacuum drying using resources from the
power station;
Final closing flange connections will be leak tested using low pressure dry air or nitrogen or
similar;
Final closing welds (Golden Welds) will not be manual welds and they will be 100% X-Ray
Inspected;
Pipeline will be required to cater for both gas and potential dense phase flow during the
demonstration period;

Items to be Defined
The selection of inhibition chemicals and dosage for the hydrotest medium shall take into
consideration any scheduled or potential interval between flooding and commissioning
operations; HOLD 3
Whether hydrotest water can be disposed into sea at the beach and how discharge is
handled; HOLD 4
Resourced plan and cost estimate for testing and drying the pipeline to the required level of
dryness. HOLD 5
