INDIRECT OR REPORTED SPEECH

1. DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH

There are two ways of relating what a person has said: direct and indirect.
In direct speech we repeat the original speakers exact words:
He said, I have lost my umbrella.
Direct speech is found in conversations in books, in plays, and in quotations.
In indirect speech we give the exact meaning of a remark or a speech, without necessarily using
the speakers exact words:
He said (that) he had lost his umbrella.
There is no comma after say in indirect speech.
That can be omitted after say and tell + object.
It should be kept after other verbs: complain, explain, object, point out, protest etc.
When we turn direct speech into indirect, some changes are usually necessary.
These are most easily studied by considering statements, questions, and commands
separately.
2.STATEMENTS IN INDIRECT SPEECH: tense changes necessary
A. Indirect speech can be introduced by a verb in a present tense: He says that This is usual
when we are:
a. reporting a conversation that is still going on
b. reading a letter and reporting what it says
c. reading instructions and reporting them
d. reporting a statement that someone makes very often, e.g. Tom says that hell never get
married.
When the introductory verb is in present, present perfect or future tense we can report the direct
speech without any change of tense:
PAUL (phoning from the station): Im trying to get a taxi.
ANN (to Mary, who is standing beside her): Paul says he is trying to get a taxi.
B. But indirect speech is usually introduced by a verb in the past tense. Verbs in the direct
speech have then to be changed into a corresponding past tense. The changes are shown in the
following table.

You can use the present tense in reported speech if you want to say that something is still true i.e.
my name has always been and will always be Lynne so:"My name is Lynne", she said.

She said her name was Lynne. Or She said her name is Lynne.

C. Unreal past tenses (subjunctives in indirect speech)

Unreal past tenses after wish, would rather/sooner and it is time do not change:
1. We wish we didnt have to take exams, said the children.
The children said they wished they didnt have to take exams.
2

2. Its time we began planning our holidays, he said.

He said that it was time they began planning their holiday.
D. I / he / she / we / they had better remains unchanged.

Time change - Exceptions
Backshift of Simple Present is optional if the situation is still unchanged or if you agree with the original speaker.

Canberra is the capital of Australia.

She said that Canberra is / was the capital of Australia.
Backshift of Simple Past and Past Progressive is optional if they cannot be mistakenly taken for backshift of
Present Tense. So backshift is not necessary if there is a time expression indicating past.

Example:
She left Boston on Monday.
He said that she left / had left Boston on Monday.
Simple Past and Past Progressive do not normally change in sentences with when / if.

Example:
When I was having breakfast, the telephone suddenly rang.
She said that when she was having breakfast, the telephone suddenly rang.
Example:
If I had more time, I would learn French.
He said that if he had more time, he would learn French.

Time change: If the reported sentence contains an expression of time, you must change it to fit in
with the time of reporting. For example we need to change words like here and yesterday if they
have different meanings at the time and place of reporting.

Today

+ 24 hours - Indirect speech

"Today's lesson is on presentations."

She said yesterday's lesson was on presentations.

Expressions of time if reported on a different day

first or second to third person except when speaker is reporting his own words: For example:

1. He said, Ive forgotten the combination of my safe.

He said that he had forgotten the combination of his safe.
Or
2. I said, I like my new house.
I said I liked my new house. (speaker reporting his own words)

The interrogative form of the verb changes to the affirmative form.transform the question into an indirect
question

use the interrogative or if / whether
