Jib Sheet

PORT CLINTON YACHT CLUB

March 2015

From Commodore Don Rodwancy

Brrrrrrrrrr! We were colder
than Barrow Alaska last
month for a day or two.
Thats just not right. At the
time of writing this article
the temperature is -5.
Count your blessings all
you snow birds! However,
it is another great year for
ice fishing if youre into
that. Im just ready for it to
warm up so we can bring
the club back to life!
If you are wondering why
you received the JIB sheet
in the mail, here is the explanation; over the next
few months, very important information regarding
major proposed projects
will be discussed in our
publication. I urge you to
read about the proposed
projects and plan to attend
the upcoming meetings

that will be scheduled.

These meetings are to garner full membership input
regarding these projects. If
you absolutely cannot
make one of the scheduled
meetings, communicate
your thoughts or ideas to a
flag officer or Board member so it can be considered.
It is preferred that your
communication be via hard
mail or email so we have
record of it. I once again
offer my email as a means
for you to share your
thoughts or concerns.

Want to learn more about
our clubs beginning?
Later this month, Jim Widmer will be assembling a
historical presentation on
Samuel P. Alexander, our
first Commodore. The dis-

play will be in the Lounge

area and I encourage you
to check out our past. We
are fortunate to have members like Jim who volunteer their time to preserve
our history for us to enjoy.
Thank you Jim!
Upcoming events in March
include; membership
meeting on the 5th, FNS on
the 6th, St Pattys Day
Party on the 14th, Burger
Night on the 15th, Jr Sailing Fund Raiser on the 20th
and finally FNS on the 27th
to round out the month.
Stop in, the Bartenders are
getting bored! And remember, the club is on the
way home from everywhere!

The Rear Perspective, Dave Obergefell

SAFETY FIRST! The safety of our members, guests,
and employees is a critical responsibility of the flag officers and board of PCYC. This has been especially important with the awful weather being experienced this
winter. It has taken huge efforts on the staff to keep our
walkways and roads clean and safe which I hope you all
appreciate. I might add that Eric, Ted, and Chuck do this
work entirely without contracting any of the work outside
which saves large amounts of money. Our focus on
safety will continue and one safety project already completed for spring was the rebuilding of both hoists and the
spare by a profession hoist company. Working with the

FCOS, dock chairman, and other members we will establish rules for hoist use and hopefully reduce the damage to
the hoists and enhance our safety by assuring proper
use. The electrical pedestal project was also finished last
year for a huge dock safety improvement and now that the
project is finished we ask that all members pay particular
attention to the dock rule which requires proper connection
to the shore. Improper connections and cords are a fire and
safety hazard. Finally YOUR input to safety recommendations at the club are welcome and essential. Let's make
2015 the best and safest year at PCYC! Hurry spring!!

Fleet Captain of Power
As I write this we are sitting at negative
two degrees and the ground is covered
with snow. I took a drive out around
Catawba and saw as many ice shanties
as there are boats in the summer. With
that being said we are only eight weeks
away from the PIB ICEBREAKER. For those of you waiting
with great anticipation, here are the
scheduled cruises for 2015. The sign up sheets will be dropped off at the
club this weekend.

PIB ICE-BREAKER (A-Dock):

April 24th-26th
Sandusky Yacht Club:
June 19th-21st
Leamington:
July 17th-19th
Middle Bass Yacht Club:
August 14th-16th
Miller Dock (PIB):
September 18th-20th

Fleet Captain of Sail

Greetings to all PCYC Members. It seems hard to believe
that this is my 3rd Article for
the Newsletter. Although
there is still snow on the
ground and temperatures are
freezing
the
Sail
Fleet has been busy preparing
for Spring!
The Lasagna Dinner was held
Friday, February 20 and was
very successful thanks to the
support of our membership. In
addition to the support of our
membership we had overwhelming support from our
Sail Team parents and kids.
This was the first time that
most of the parents and kids
have gotten together since last
summer. The assistance we
received made our first fund
raiser go very smoothly.
Again thanks to all.
The Sail Fleet is scheduled to
present the Safety At Sea
Seminar Saturday, February
28. We have received good
support for this event from
other yacht clubs and we are
Page 2

expecting a great turnout.

The best part is that the proceeds from this event will
further support our Sail Team.
Thanks to Cliff Ruckstuhl for
organizing this event. We also
have the North U Sailing Tactics Seminar scheduled for
March 21. We expect an
equally good turnout for that
event.
Matt Wenzinger is busy finalizing the Learn to Sail Schedule. We will again have two
(2) summer sessions with a
morning and afternoon class.
As soon as the schedule is set
we will send it out to those
who have indicated an interest
and post it to the Website. We
are expecting a large turn out
so let us know what schedule
works best for you and your
kids.
As we move along in our
scheduling we will be looking
for volunteers to help run our
Sunday Racing. If you would
like to help out let us know.
We will be offering a Clinic

in April for those interested in

helping to run our races and
those that just want to know
more about sailing and running sailboat races.
Finally the Spring I-LYA
Meeting will be held March
27-28 in Perrysburg. Spring
cant come too soon!

March 2015
Learn To Sail Program Dates Set
As the snow is falling we have been busy in preparation for the up-coming Jr. sailing
season. Dates have been set for the 2015 Learn To Sail (LTS) program, instructors and
coaches have been selected and now we need spring to arrive. Learn To Sail session
#1 will be June 8 - June 26. Learn To Sail Session #2 will be June 29 - July 17. We are
happy to announce a "weekend" program this summer to facilitate sailing for those that
are not able to commit to a 3 week "week day" program. Dates are soon to follow. Our
first Junior Sailing Fundraiser will be this Friday, February 20. Please feel free to email
with any thoughts, questions, or input to Matt Wenzinger: MJ12WENZ@gmail.com
Sincerely,
Matt Wenzinger
