Bridgewater for All: ORGANised Sound

The Bridgewater Hall would like to invite your
school to take part in its brand new summer
2015 schools project, ORGANised Sound.
This project for Key Stage 2 will introduce
children to the science and sounds of the Halls
magnificent pipe organ including its 4
keyboards, 76 stops and 5,500 pipes before
exploring the building blocks of musical
composition and performance. The project will
include an opportunity to hear the pipe organ in
concert and will culminate in a performance of
childrens own music in the main auditorium at
The Bridgewater Hall.
Designed to fit into school timetables after
SATs, the project will work with Manchester-born organist Jonathan Scott, and his
brother Tom, Tutor in Electroacoustic Composition at the Royal Northern College of
Music. Childrens experience will begin with an invitation to a lunchtime organ concert
performed by Jonathan, with a special pre-concert introduction for school audiences.
Children will then work with Tom over a full day session, using school music
equipment and their own instruments to explore and arrange sounds into music. A
second half-day session will provide time to rehearse and finalise pieces before the
performance at the Hall.
The project supports the KS2 musical curriculum including notation, listening,
composition and performance. Schools may also choose to use it as an exciting
creative stimulus for literacy or numeracy work around key signature and tempo,
describing and interpreting music. The Bridgewater Hall can also provide additional
learning resources based around science and music, or support school staff to accredit
childrens creativity through Arts Award Discover or Explore.
Project practicalities
Were inviting schools to take part in this project with up to two classes from upper
KS2 ideally year 5 and/or 6. You may apply to take part with two classes across one
year group, with two year groups, or in partnership with a neighbouring school; it will
be helpful in allocating places if we can work with paired classes from the same or
neighbouring schools.
Pupils already learning music, either through Wider
Opportunities or individually, will be able to integrate their own instruments or voices
into the project but places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and
not based on previous musical experience.

The entire project is offered free of charge, and is funded directly by Bridgewater for
All, The Bridgewater Halls Learning and Participation department. Each school will be
offered:
Tickets for 1-2 classes, plus accompanying adults, to attend Jonathan Scotts
Dancing Feet concert on Tuesday 19 May.
One full and one half day workshop, per class, in school with Tom Scott
All materials directly related to the project
A chance to perform at The Bridgewater Hall alongside other schools
Participating schools will be asked to commit to:
Providing transport and staffing for 2 visits to The Bridgewater Hall, one of
which will fall outside of usual school hours
Providing a suitable space and staffing for all workshops in school
Ensuring that students receive relevant information about each session and
that appropriate permissions are received for out of school visits
