At my high school we are

required to do a graduation
project, this includes a
presentation, a product, and a
research paper. While most are
making bird houses, I decided
to do something I am
passionate about. I have been
playing music for a few years
and so I decided to create and
produce my own original music
to be released on an Extended
Play. I have taught myself piano
and learned guitar after a few
years of lessons. I am teaching
myself to operate audio
recording equipment and
software, learning about how to
create different and better
sounding music, and exploring
different style and genres of
music.

Essay (Required)
Reflect on a time when
you challenged a belief
or idea. What
prompted you to act?
Would you make the
same decision again?*
(250 word minimum)

When I was around fifteen years of age I was

approaching the end of one of the most
troubled times in my life. Many teenagers
experience some form of social alienation or
become withdrawn from family, but mine was
severe. I felt as though I had no intrinsic or
instrumental value. In other words I felt
worthless and that my life would never be
worth living. I knew there were other people
my age who felt this way, and while I felt it
would last forever, I knew that eventually I
could overcome these feelings. Then things
changed for me in a way I had never expected,
and I found myself to be more compassionate
and more willing to stand for what I know is
important. Despite my feelings that I have no
real worth as person I was aware that most
people would disagree, and that humans
usually consider most other humans to be
valuable beyond the usefulness they offer to
specific other humans. However there are
living beings who are only valued on their use
to humans and I realized that not only are
these beings abused and neglected, but that I
was contributing directly to their suffering.
Whom I am referring to here is all of the life
present on Earth. I found that only within the
past few centuries mankind has posed an ever
growing danger to a planet more valuable to
us than any black gold or military agenda
could ever be. I discovered that every year
billions of animals are tortured, maimed, and
killed for their skin, fur, and flesh, yet most
people seemed unaware of the substantial
damage these practices were having on our
planets ecosystems, our overall physical well
being as a species, and our privilege to call
ourselves intelligent life. When I was finally
exposed to this after years of being kept in the
dark I found myself confused and hysterical. I
could not believe that anyone could perform
the horrors of vivisection and animal testing
under the illusion that it was benefiting
medical science in any major way. I was
appalled by the conditions that animals are
exposed to in zoos, circuses, and other animal
based forms of entertainment. I began seeing
humanity as the bloodthirsty crowd who in
ancient times would watch men fight each
other to the death in the arena. Lastly I saw
one of the most vile and most heart wrenching
atrocities man had ever created. Millions upon
millions of chickens in tiny wire cages,

15

newborn dairy cows being dragged away from

their crying mothers, piglets beaten against
hard concrete floors, and other unspeakable
horrors. These things had been hidden from
me my entire life and I realized that the image
of the elderly farmer milking his clean and
beautiful dairy cow in the barn was a lie.
However, I knew what I could do to change the
cruel fate of animals and to save myself from
the death of my compassion and kindness. I
changed my diet to one based only on plants
and discontinued my purchasing of leather,
fur, and other animal derived products. It has
not been easy and there have been many days
where I have been limited to a peanut butter
and jam sandwich or in some cases I simply
have gone hungry, but I will not give up
despite these hardships. It was not enough for
me to simply change my life, I wanted to affect
others and open their eyes to what I had seen.
My family was staunchly against my new
lifestyle, I never imagined my own family
would try and hold me back from being a
better person, though I know now they were
only worried about me. Despite their
opposition I have not given in. I began
reaching out into my community to find other
people with similar ideas. I live in a small rural
area where hunting and fishing are the norm
so it was not an easy task, yet I have found
other compassionate people. I continue to
reach out to my friends about the amazing
benefits of a plant based diet and a
sustainable lifestyle. I speak about my passion
for animals and my reverence for nature in my
music and writing. At almost every turn it
seems like everyone from my friends and
family to the government and massive
corporations have attacked me for refusing to
be cruel, yet I continue to fight. I hope to find
an easier life and other like minded people
away from my home town, but I know
wherever I am I will continue to fight for what I
know is right, because I see despite the bad
decisions we have made, we have an ever
expanding capacity to show love and kindness
towards all life on Earth.
