SimpleDCAdapterPowerSupply

Introduction
Youneedapowersupplyforaproject,butonlyhaveaDCadapteravailable,soyoucan'tuse
myACpoweradaptertrick.Thislittleprojectcameaboutbecauseareaderhadjustthis
problem,anddidn'tknowwhathecoulddo.
ThisideawillworkbestwithDCadaptershaving12VDCormorelowervoltageswillwork,
butthedynamicrangewillnotbeasgoodasitcouldbe.Forexampleusinga12VDCsupply
youwillget+/6V,allowingamaximumsignallevelofabout2.8V(allowingforlossesintheop
amps).Whilethisisstillmorethanenoughformostapplications,itisgenerallybettertohaveas
muchheadroomaspossible.
Thesupplyherewillnotbesuitableforlowlevelcircuits(suchasphonopreamps),asthese
reallydoneedlotsofheadroom,andhummightbeaproblem,sincethestandardpluginpower
supplyisnotregulated.Forhighlevelapplications,suchasthesurrounddecoderoracrossover
filter,thiscircuitwillallowyoutouseasupplyyoualreadyhave,savingafewRupee,dollars,
pfennigs,shekels(etc).Theaddedcapacitanceshouldkeephumlevelslow,butyoucanincrease
the1000uFcapsifyouwanttoensurelowerripple.
Therearetwoversions,oneisultrasimple,andisfinewherethereisnoloadimbalancewhich
isthemajorityofopampcircuits.Wherethereisadifferentcurrentfrom+veandvesupplies,
youwillneedtousethesecondcircuit,whichallowsupto30mAcurrentimbalancebetweenthe
supplies.
Description
Circuitsdon'tcomemuchsimplerthanthis.TheinputDCisgivenavoltagedividertoestablish
a"virtualearth",andthisisusedasthe0Vreferencefortheunittobepowered.Initssimplest
form,itusesapairofresistorsandtwoadditionalfiltercapstomakesurethatthehumiswithin
thecapabilityofopampstoreject.Thisalsoprovidesapairofproperlydecoupledsupplyrails
topowerthecircuit.Asmentionedabove,youcanincreasethe1000uFcapstogetlesshum,but
itisnotlikelytocauseaproblemopampshaveveryhighpowersupplyrejection,soevenquite
highhumlevelsonthesupplywillnotbeaudibleattheoutput.

Therewillbeinstanceswherethecurrentsfromeachsupplywillbeunequal.Wherethisisthe
case,theresistordividerisnotsufficient,andthe+veandvevoltageswillbeunequal.Byusing
acheapopamp(suchasauA741),aDCimbalancebetweensuppliesofuptoabout15mAwill
notcauseaproblem.However,wecandobetterwithadualopamp(whichwillcostthesameor
lessanyway),andincreasethecapabilityforuptoabout30mAofdifferencebetweenthetwo
supplies.

The10Ohmresistors(whichcanactuallybealmostanyvaluethatishandyfrom10to100
Ohms)allowtheopampstosharetheloadproperly.Withoutthese,onehalfoftheamp(that
withthehighergain)willdoallthework,andthecircuitwillnotworknearlyaswell.Opamp
noiseorothersoniccharacteristicsareofnoconsequence,sincetheirinfluenceiscompletely
swampedbythecapacitance,sothecircuitlookslikearegularDCsupplytothefollowing
circuitry.

Verysimple,butworksverywell.Ihaveusedthistechniquemanytimesindifferentdesigns,
anditisextremelyeffective.Ifoundthatthecircuitwillkeepthesupplybalancedwithasmuch
as40mAofunbalancedload(I.e.withupto40mAfrom+veorvetoground),however,thisis
pushingtheopamprighttoitslimits.

Notethatthereisnoreversepolarityprotection,sincethediodevoltagedrop
willreducethelimitedvoltageevenfurther.Ifyoursupplyishighenoughin
voltage(orthediodedropisnotaproblemforyou),usea1N4004inseries
withthepositivesupplylead.
Also,ifaLEDpowerindicatoristobeused,makesurethatit(anditsseries
resistor)gobetweensupplyrails,andnottotheartificialearth.Thisis
important!
