PART 3

Chesapeake Region
Jamestown, Virginia
Whose
3 groups, Chesapeake
money makers, lot of money who go to colonies for more money, want most pwoer an
d control
2nd sons from barbados, white English immigrants have lots of sons (first son in
herits everything, mostly everything, so islands become overpopulated w/ second
and third sons, so look to North America, bring slaves system to carolina))
slavery will develop one law at a time in the colonies
carolinas, slavery is transplanted from carribean
vast majority aren't in any of these two groups, they're indentured servants
mostly men (some women); important because ???? TO CHANGE THEIR STARS
3/4 of english are indentured servants
couldn't pay, paid by somebody will hire them
indentured servant has to work until they pay their debt
Bacon's Rebellion- Civil War in Virginia, Indentured Servants
Chesapeake region's economic structure built on agriculture
Judged by land you own, the more land you own the more slaves you have and the m
ore crops you can bring in
cash crops are land-intensive and labor intensive
Religion is not a huge deal in the south; yes they pay lip service and are chris
tians, the center of life is not based on relgiion but money
In New England/ North; settled by Puritans, myth that religious freedom meant re
ligious tolerance; puritans were ANYTHING BUT tolerant of other religions; initi
ally settled by puritans, but was economically successful
(puritans lay foundation for political social and economic structure, doesn't la
st long but over 20,000 puritans move to new england region in 1630s
By 1675 50,000 english in region, only 20,000 puritans; puritan influence is a l
ittle diluted
1675 People attracted not by Puritan idealism and ideas but economy opportunitie
s, trade jobs
New England, Trading Center (through civil war and reconstruction too)
Why are puritans important if they lose influence so quickly?

New England: initially all about religion, faith and salvation and practicing ow
n religion (but not allowing others to do that): becomes more economically diver
sified, but doesn't develop large-scaled dependance on slavery
commerce and trade, seaports
south: joint stock companies, populated by english poor and indentured servants
very little infrastructural development and diversification
