The following catalogue section lists part numbers of non-Bosch equipment for which there are interchangeable Bosch products or components available.Since
a wide range of different designation systems are used, we were forced to arrange the non-Bosch part numbers in a uniform alphanumerical order. This differs
from the customary order employed by some manufacturers. Reconversion of Bosch numbers back to the numbers of other manufacturers is not permitted. The
Bosch type designation contained in this cross reference represent guidelines. For definitive spark-plug recommendation, please refer to the spark plug application,
section B.
Note
The laws governing competition stipulate that only Bosch type numbers may be used vis-a-vis the final customer for the identification of Boschparts.

Are Bosch spark plugs pre-gapped at
the factory?
FAQs
Most Bosch spark plugs are factory pregapped for popular vehicle applications.
The gap measurements are indicated
either on the box, or by part number
located on the spark plug shell.
X suffix = 1.1 mm
Y suffix = 1.5 mm
U suffix = 1.0 mm
Bosch SuperPlus, platinum and resistor
spark plugs also have factory-set
gaps. For most plugs, the setting is
shown on the plug package. These
gaps are correct for the most popular
applications of these plugs. There are
applications however, for which the gap
setting has to be adjusted according to
the vehicle manufacturers specification.

GLOSSARY
Multi Ground.
Plugs with multiple ground electrodes
are called multi ground. These plugs
also use surface gap spark patterns and
the multiple ground electrodes increase
service life.
Surface Gap
Surface gap technology is when the
ground electrode is to the side of the
centre electrode. There can be no
ground electrode (racing applications),
multiple ground electrodes (PT+4 and
PT2), or a single ground electrode.
These spark plugs have improved
efficiency and a higher probability of
igniting a lean air/fuel mixture.
Resistor
Many spark plugs have a special
conductive glass seal between the
centre electrode and the terminal
stud. This seal acts as a resistor in the
plug which reduces the transmission
of pulses of energy to the ignition
cables. These pulses can cause Radio
Frequency Interference (RFI) with
electrical components in the car. For
some newer cars, resistor plugs are
required for effective communication
between the plugs and the electronic
ignition.
Bridging
Over time, contaminants can build on
the surface of the spark plug if it does
not reach self-cleaning temperature
often. These build-ups can grow
between the electrodes until they
are actually connected by a bridge of
contaminants. This will often cause
misfire
Flashover
Occurs when the spark does not jump
between the electrodes within the
combustion chamber, but instead
jumps between the metal shell and the
terminal on top of the plug. This will
always cause a misfire since the air/fuel
mixture will not be ignited. Bosch spark
plugs have a ribbed insulator to prevent
flashover.
Quenching
The purpose of a spark plug is to
introduce enough heat into the
combustion chamber to initiate a
smooth burn of the air/fuel mixture.
Quenching occurs when that heat
generated by the spark is re-absorbed
back into the ground electrode, the
centre electrode, and the ceramic
insulation. To reduce quenching and
ensure an efficient transfer of heat,
Bosch Platinum+4 and Platinum2 spark
plugs use surface gap technologies.
2008
1 + 2 Normal
Insulator nose greyish-yellow to russet
brown.
Engine is in order. Heat range of plug
correct.
Mixture setting & ignition timing are
correct, no misfiring, cold starting
device functions correctly.
No deposits from fuel additives
containing lead or from alloying
constituents in the engine oil.
No overheating.
3 + 4 Soot - carbon fouled
Insulator nose, electrodes & spark-plug
shell covered with velvet-like, dull black
soot deposits.
Cause : Incorrect mixture setting
(carburettor, fuel injection) mixture
too rich, air filter very dirty, automatic
choke not in order or manual choke
pulled too long, mainly short distance
driving, spark plug too cold, heat range
code number too low
Effect : Misfiring, poor cold-starting
performance.
Remedy : Set mixture & cold-starting
device correctly, check air filter.
5 + 6 Oil-fouled
Insulator nose electrodes & spark-plug
shell covered with shiny soot or carbon
residue.
Cause : Too much oil in combustion
chamber. Oil level too high, badly worn
piston rings, cylinders & valve guides. In
two stroke gasoline engines, too much
oil in mixture.
Effect : Misfiring, poor starting
performance.
Remedy : Overhaul engine, correct
fuel-oil mixture, new spark plugs.
2008
7 + 8 Lead deposits
In places the insulator nose is glazed
brownish yellow; this may also tend
towards green.
Cause : Fuel additives which contain
lead. The glaze appears in the case of
heavy engine loading after lengthy partload operation.
Effect : Under heavy loading deposits
become electrically conductive & cause
misfiring.
Remedy : New spark plugs, cleaning is
pointless.
9 + 10 Heavy Lead deposits
In places the insulator nose is thickly
glazed brownish-yellow, this may also
tend towards green.
Cause : fuel additives which contain
lead. The glaze appears in the case of
heavy engine loading after lengthy partload operation.
Effect : Under heavy loading, deposits
become electrically conductive & cause
misfiring.
Remedy : new spark plugs, cleaning is
pointless.
11 + 12 Heavy Lead deposits
Heavy ash deposits from oil & fuel
additives on the insulator nose, in
the scavenging area & on the ground
electrode. The structure of the ash is
loose to cinder-like.
Cause : Alloying constituents, in
particular from oil,can deposit this ash
in the combustion chamber & on the
spark-plug face.
Effect : Can lead to auto ignition with
loss of power & engine damage.
Remedy : Repair engine. New spark
plugs. Possibly use other oil.

Note :
In so far as they were not received from the motor vehicle or
engine manufacturer, the spark plug recommendations have
been drawn up by Bosch.
The spark plugs recommended apply to standard operating
conditions for series models, however not to racing, special
and high performance versions, unless such models are
specifically listed.

LPG
Dual Fuel
The spark plug is usually measured in
petrol mode and you will need to make
a compromise between the operation
on both fuel types.
If you use mainly LPG the electrode gap
should be reduced 0.1 - 0.2 mm and
go one heat range colder.
Eg : WR8DC+ 0.8mm (petrol) to
WR7DC+ 0.7mm (LPG).
Note that if this vehicle runs on petrol
in stop / start traffic it can misfire if
using the LPG plug.
Note that electrode gap changes
greater than 0.2 mm should be avoided.
Do not regap Super 4s.
1hp = 0.736Kw
i.e. :
Ford Laser KA, KB 1.3, 1.5L 1981-1985
Current recommendation: WR8DC+
If problems are experienced due to
LRP, we suggest trying WR9DC+
If no problems have been experienced
in the change from leaded petrol LRP
or ULP then no changes should be
made to the application.
However if you have fouling (mainly
in stop / start driving conditions) this
change may be of benefit.
The same rule applies to Super 4 and
Platinum spark plugs. The gap remains
unchanged and should be set as per
the catalogue recommendation.
