St. Pats Celebration off to a great start

by Vicki Grimmer
Correspondent

It was a full house at the

American Legion Saturday night
when another record-breaking
crowd helped give Maple Lakes
St. Patricks Day Celebration an
impressive kick-off.
The evenings events began at
5:30 for the social hour which included some spirited bidding on
the 60 baskets up for grabs in the
silent auction and the half-card
raffle tickets were quickly sold
out as party-goers vied for the
opportunity to win one of the
four raffle items.
During the dinner provided
by HH Catering, Maple Lake
Mayor Lynn Kissock launched
the award portion of the evening
by expressing appreciation that
In this Irish Catholic community you welcomed and elected a
Scottish English Methodist as
mayor. Kissock hastened to add
that, in fact, her 7th great-grandfather was Irish.
As her first order of business,
Kissock, on behalf of the community, bade farewell to outgoing Maple Lake Ambassadors,
Lori Elsenpeter, Courtney Klingelhoets and Blair Stewig and introduced this years candidates
Heather Blahut, still in her Dojo
Karate uniform, in celebration of
a 2nd degree black belt earned
earlier that day, and Madison
Nelson, costumed as a book, her
self-described autobiography
that was, in her words, to be
continued, and I can only hope
that I will live happily ever

after.
Third candidate, Maya Ortiz,
was unable to attend.
Kissock went on to welcome
Ethel Fobbe the Grand Marshal
of the 38th St. Patricks Day parade. She presented Fobbe the
commemorative plaque saying,
It is truly an honor to be in your
presence and to have your history and your legacy be part of
Maple Lake. A standing ovation
greeted Fobbes acceptance of
the award.
Chamber member Wendy
Sylvester then had the privilege
to present this years Commodore Award to an individual
honored every year by the Minneapolis Aquatennial and recognized as an outstanding volunteer
in our community. This year the
award goes to my father, Steve
Mooney.
Mooney, a long-time Lion
member and current member of
Maple Lakes 125th Anniversary
committee, was caught off guard
by the award. I had no idea,
said Mooney. I was just sitting
there and half listening and half
talking to others at the table, and
all of a sudden I heard her mention something and thought
Gosh, shes talking about me! I
didnt know what to say when
she got me up there, but she kind
of shuffled me off pretty quicklyshe said, I didnt want you to get
started talking, Dad, wed be
here all night!

The Honorary Grand Marshal

of this years St. Patricks Day
Parade is KARE 11s television
journalist, Boyd Huppert.
Best known for KAREs
weekly Land of 10,000 Stories
segment, Huppert has earned
some of broadcast journalisms
highest honors, including a national Emmy for feature reporting, more than 80 regional
Emmys- including one for his
2012 feature on sisters Helen Doherty and Florence Menth, the
National Headliner Grand Award,
the Scripps-Howard Award, three
national Sigma Delta Chi Awards
and 12 national Edward R. Murrow Awards.
Huppert grew up on a farm in
Wisconsin, began his broadcasting career in radio, but quickly
moved into television. Prior to his
arrival at KARE 11, he spent time
at television stations in Wausau,
Wisconsin, Omaha, Nebraska
and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Maple Lakes own Ashley

Becker, or as she is more formally known, Miss Teen of
Minnesota, is aiming to take her
title to a new level this week.
For three days, Friday,
March 13, through Sunday,
March 15, Becker will go up
against teens from across the
country in a competition that
will test her awareness of the
world, scholastic achievements,
poise, personality, and much
more with the goal of becoming
the new Miss Teen of America.
If she wins the title she will
continue on a journey that began
back in 2013.
According to Beckers mom,
Sandy, the Miss Teen of America
organization
contacts
schools and searches local publications for outstanding female
teens. Becker applied and was
one of the 40 participants cho-

sen to run for the title of Miss

Teen of Minnesota.
She was invited to compete
in 2011, however, we didnt
even look at it as I thought it
was a beauty pageant, Sandy
said. When she was invited
again in 2013 I actually read the
information and thought it
might be worth looking into.
Clearly it was worth it as along
with the title of Miss Teen of
Minnesota came a $1,000 scholarship and the opportunity to
run for the title of Miss Teen of
America.
That summer, Becker went
up against 40 other would-be
Miss Teens of Minnesota at St.
Cloud State University and
won.
Now a freshman at St.
Thomas University, Becker has
spent her two-year reign involved in a number of noble
pursuits including Operation
Glass Slipper, which collects

formal gowns, shoes and accessories for teenagers who would

like to attend the prom but cant
afford an outfit; Teens for Jeans
Drive which collected 335 pairs
of jeans for homeless teenagers
last spring; Healing Haiti and
fund-raisers for St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
Early on in her reign, she
headed up a fundraiser that collected over $4,000 for a family
who lost their five-month-old
daughter to a rare liver disease.
At the time she called it the
most rewarding event that I
participated in during all of
this.
This weekends competition
will likely prove to be stiffer
than any other as all of the girls
have already proved themselves
to some extent by winning their
states individual competitions.

Maple Lakes basketball ways didnt turn out the
way fans would have liked when they were defeated by Annandale
last Tuesday 67-57 at St. Michael-Albertville in the semi-finals of
the sub-section. The Irish were cold and couldnt buy a basket in
the first half when Annandales tough defense kept them at bay and
the Cardinals took a commanding 34-20 lead. An effort by the Irish
to close the gap fell short when Annandale came out with a hot hand
in the second half. I stuck around for the Breck vs. Providence
Academy game and watched Breck chip away at Providences halftime 37-33 lead to win 64-62 in a close game. I figured they would
give Annandale a run for their money, so to speak, but that didnt
happen when the Cardinals dominated the Section finals and defeated Breck 65-42 at St. Cloud. In the second game Melrose defeated a tough Eden Valley-Watkins team 50-42. Both Annandale
and Melrose played in the state tournament on Wednesday, Annandale vs. Caledonia at 6 p.m.; and Melrose vs. Red Wood Valley at
8 p.m. If both teams continue to win they would meet in the finals
on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Target Center. If that happens, and I
hope it does, the Target Center will be rocking with fans from both
towns. My sentiments go with Annandale who is making a repeat
trip to state this year after losing to Esko in the finals 60-41 a year
ago.

The favorable weather prompted me to get back to winter angling last week when the temps got into the 30s. I chose Rock Lake,
mostly because that seemed to be the only lake where I could get
any bites. This was on Thursday and I was the only person on the

I wrote a note to my cardiologist. My computer says I can
do that. I'm dizzy, I said, and
I have four medications that
they say could make me dizzy. I
fell back on the bed this morning, and if I had fallen another
way, I could have gone out the
window. It's cold outside, and I
don't like to be dizzy, so how do
I tell which one is making me
dizzy?
Maybe it isn't the medications, he said in response. I
will have you see the nurse practitioner. She will tell you to do
some other doctor stuff. Meantime, take your blood pressure.
That'll keep you busy for a day
or two. He didn't really say it

that way, but that's what he

meant. So he did, and I called
her to set an appointment. I saw
her four or five years ago, too,
when the doctor had a golf
game.
The doctor said you were
dizzier than usual, the nurse
practitioner said on the phone,
evidently recognizing my name.
Maybe they keep notes on dizzy
people. Doctor says it's likely
your diuretic, so take one pill
every other day, and keep track
of your blood pressure daily, and
weigh yourself each morning,
and see me in a week and a half
at eleven in the morning, okay?
She didn't really say it that way,
but that's what she meant.

Question: I recently saw a
vehicle going down the highway with one of the car doors
left wide open, I believe it was
the right rear door of this fourdoor vehicle. It appeared that
the person in the vehicle was
hauling something and unable
to shut their car door. Whatever
they were hauling was sticking
out just barely, but the car door
was completely open. I was
wondering if this is illegal.
Answer: If the right rear
door was completely open, I
would say that was illegal.

passenger door to be on a vehicle (for example, Jeeps, delivery trucks, etc.); however, the
door being opened cannot inhibit the flow of traffic. Minnesota State Statute (M.S.S.)
has laws in reference to extending beyond fenders and projecting loads.
M.S.S. 169.80 subdivision 3
says, No passenger-type vehicle shall be operated on any
highway with any load carried
thereon extending beyond the
line of the fenders on the left
side of such vehicle nor extending more than six inches beyond

So I did. I weighed myself

every morning and found that I
didn't vary while on a pill every
other day, so in doctor terms, I
wasn't retaining extra water. I
had a retention problem in college economics, too, but it wasn't water. I thought it was
something similar. I had that
problem in chemistry, too.
When I went to see the nurse
practitioner, I brought along my
list of weights and blood pressures. She looked at it and said
something like Huh and
tossed it away. Then she took
my blood pressure. They always
do that. She said it looked good,
and I said it was lower there
than at home. She said maybe
the meds hadn't had time to
work when I took it. Every day.
For a week and a half.
Later, Sister-in-law, a retired
nurse, said I should take half a
pill a day instead of a whole pill
every other day. That made
sense, so I cut a bunch of pills in

half, and kept up that routine.

I still got up dizzy. Aha,
said Wife. I bet it's one of the
other pills. How about those
enormous pink ones you take
twice a day? They must be expensive. Try cutting down on
those, and use the savings to
take me out to lunch.
Well, they are expensive,
being over-the-counter instead
of prescription. Stuff that's
under the counter usually is the
expensive stuff, but that doesn't
apply to pills.
Wife's guess seems to be
working a little better than medical science. Not that I'm no
longer dizzy, but now if I stand
for a half a minuteaway from
the windowI'm able to navigate properly.
Next, I need to write the doctor a note to see if I'm endangering my health. My other pills
with dizzy warnings are smaller
and easier to swallow, so I hope
it all works.

lake when I got out there about 1 p.m. I caught a few small sunfish
before I had a pickup drive up and heard a not very familiar voice
ask to see my fishing license. It was DNR Conservation Officer
Mies and I dug out my license from my billfold which was kind of
a struggle because I was wearing my cold weather fishing pants
with suspenders. He was patient and we traded information about
winter fishing. We agreed it hadnt been very productive this year,
but hoped it would get better with late ice conditions still ahead of
us.
.
.
I quit early that day, mostly because I ran out of
propane; but I went out again on Friday in the morning. There were
a few other anglers on the lake, but I didnt find the action any better
no matter where I dropped a line, so it was pizza for supper. . .
I passed on fishing Saturday and Sunday deciding I should be patient. A drive by Maple Lake Sunday afternoon had a congregation
of snowmobilers and one Clam out from the beach. There was more
action further out on the lake, but it was some people flying kites.
The large kites, one with a double tail, were getting fairly high in
the west wind and were impressive to watch. . .
two comments about seeing dead skunks on the highway Sunday was another harbinger that spring isnt too far off.

The predictions for nice weather Saturday for Maple Lakes St.
Patricks Day Festival was good news for all the events that are
planned for that day. Im confident there will be a lot of people in
town because of the weather to participate in the Scamper, the

Ethel Fobbe, whom I thought was a great choice.

I hope everyone had the know-how to set their vehicle clocks
ahead Sunday. I apparently didnt. I thought I had it figured out, but
when I fired up the Subaru Monday it had reverted back to regular
time. I suspect I missed acknowledging the final setting, so now Ill
have to start all over. Its frustrating for me to understand the directions printed in the manual. I may be a country bumpkin, but it
seems to me resetting the clock should be easy, which it isnt!

Maple Lake resident Brandy

Sutton is fulfilling a dream by
taking over as the new owner of
Maple Lake Floral.
Sutton, who attended floral
design school back in 1996, put
her career on hold to raise a family, but once her son grew up and
joined the National Guard, she
started to pursue a floral career
once again. Sutton reached out
to Darrell Jensen, former owner
of Maple Lake Floral, to ask
about helping out on a part-time
basis. She learned Jensen was
planning to retire and had already sold the building, so she
bought the inventory and supplies from him and opened up
her own shop at 58 Birch Avenue South (across from the costume shop) on March 2.
Sutton said shell continue to
operate as a full-service retail
florist for all life-changing

events, and will use all the same

vendors as before. She invites
customers to stop in for free coffee and cookies Monday-Friday
as shed like to mingle with people in the community and find
out what theyd like to see in the
store. You can also see Brandy
(disguised as a flower) in the St.
Patricks Day Parade handing
out floral rewards cards.
Maple Lake Floral is now
open at its new location. The
phone and fax numbers remain
the same: 320-963-8860 (phone)
and 320-963-8859 (fax). Hours
are Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m., and Sunday for consultations only.
A Grand Opening Celebration will take place March 30April 4 (the week of Easter).
In-store specials will include 10
percent off all gift baskets and
plants, and a special on helium
balloons.

County looking to prevent distracted driving

by John Holler
Correspondent

For years, law enforcement

has dealt with the biggest problems that lead to driving fatalities. The primary focus has been
on two areas speeding and
drunk driving. However, there is
a new culprit that is putting drivers at risk distracted driving.
The primary focus on preventing
distracted driving is to keep people off their cell phones while
operating a motor vehicle, something that is easier said and done.
Wright County Sheriff Joe
Hagerty has been working with
Pat Hackman of the Safe Com-

munities of Wright County program to educate and inform the

public of the dangers of distracted driving. The annual saturations that the sheriffs
department does in terms of addressing speeding and drunk
driving have started to include
distracted driving. Hagerty said
the first such saturation enforcement began last summer and he
was surprised at the results.
We did a saturation last
summer that were going to do
again this spring to bring some
awareness to the problem,
Hagerty said. We post a uniformed officer on a downtown

street corner just a few feet off

the boulevard watching an intersection. Hell be looking right
into the passenger compartment
of the car. He couldnt believe
how many people were doing
something on their phone.
By Minnesota law, all juveniles under the age of 18 are prohibited from using a phone in
any form while driving. Adults
can use a phone to talk, but accessing the Internet or texting is
illegal for anyone operating a
motor vehicle. The issue that
law enforcement faces is that, as
a society, weve become more
mobile and phones have become

almost indispensable to many

people, even when theyre driving.
The problem is that people
are addicted to their phones,
Hagerty said. They do so much
that their like a computer or a
tablet in the palm of their hand.
They use it for everything, so its
hard to get some of them to put
it down even when theyre
driving. Everybody has them
and theyre so accessible. If they
lose their phone, theyre totally
lost.

Wildlife biologist, Emilee

when asked about the future of
pheasants in Minnesota, when
she said, We need to give them
a place to live. That translates
into habitat. She commented

nearly 300 members and guests
who participated in the numerous fund-raising opportunities.
To show the chapters appreciation for 30 successful years,
a free raffle for a small caliber

Heres How It Works:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into
nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must
fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once
in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already
provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier
it gets to solve the puzzle!

MLE I Love to Read month finale

The Maple Lake Elementary
wrapped up Februarys I Love
to Read month with a visit from
author/illustrator Gary Harbo.
The 1st thru 6th grade students
drew along with Harbo as he
demonstrated simple step-by-

step lessons in drawing characters and making them unique to

the person drawing them. Harbo
provided many choices mixed
with a good sense of humor.
This lesson builds self-confidence and allows children to ex-

plore talents that may have been

hidden under a blanket of frustration. For the kindergarten
class, he read one of his books,
"Where is My Sister" and
showed them how to draw some
of the characters.

A writing recognition program from students
at St. Timothys School

FRIENDSHIP
by Bethany Schultz
Friendship is a beginning,
That starts the path of love.
Friendship is a connection,
That pulls two individuals together.
Friendship is a responsibility,
Your actions are your obligation.
Friendship is joy,
The happiness is unbelievable.
Friendship is sadness,
Sorrow is found within its
boundaries.
Friendship is indivisible,
The hole can be mended.
Friendship is simple love,
Its a heart that never forgets.
Friendship is not an ending
It continues to the end.
Friendship is destiny,
It shapes your future.

Elijah Elsenpeter - Id wish
to get the pot of gold and give it

Then I would have the leprechaun take me to his house.
Calli Hadler - If I caught a
leprechaun Id wish for the
homeless and hungry to have lots
of money, food, and clothing. Id
also wish for a new home and to
be in the Harry Potter Movie 8,
maybe as a first year Ravenclaw.
Id also wish for a life supply of
dark chocolate and sour gummy
worms, cupcakes, and if its legal
a little jar to keep the leprechaun
in. I would also wish for my
birthday to be everyday and to
only have school every Tuesday,
Thursday, and Friday because
those are my favorite days of the
week.
Kolton Payne - If I met a leprechaun Id wish to live in the

Integrity is moral soundness,
It helps you make the right decisions in life.
Integrity is honesty,

Aidan Kolehmainen - If I
caught a leprechaun Id wish for

I have lived in this town my
entire life and love it dearly,
said Nelson. Being able to

represent Maple Lake as one of

its Ambassadors would be a
wonderful and life changing
experience,
Nelson has enjoyed watching and being in the parade
since she was little, thinking
its amazing to see the citizens
of Maple Lake come together
in a high-spirited and wacky
manner.
At school she participates in
speech, theatre and student
council, she also enjoys soccer,
skiing and spending time on the
lake and volunteers at the Buffalo Food Shelf.
Nelson will attend the University of Minnesota in the fall
and plans a double major in Finance and Criminology to
ready herself for law school
and a career as a corporate
lawyer.

I am running for Maple
Lake Ambassador to meet new
people, experience new things
and grow as a person through
this organization, said Ortiz.
Her favorite part of the St.
Patricks Day Celebration is the
parade, seeing everyone dressed
up and on their floats. Her hobbies include soccer, volleyball
and yoga and enjoys volunteering with Wills for Heroes.
Ortiz plans on pursuing a degree at the University of Minnesota with an emphasis in

continued from page 3
For many, the automatic assumption is that its teenagers
that are the most likely suspects
to be distracted drivers because
most of them have grown up on
smart phone technology since a
very young age. However,
Hackman said theyre not the
main culprit in breaking the
phone use laws. Its the
grownups that are the larger
problem.
What the research shows is
that its more of a problem with
our adult population, Hackman
said. The largest segment of our
population that data says are distracted driving due to phones are
people in their 20s. A recent
study showed they represent 27

percent of distracted driving that

results in fatal crashes. The misconception is that teens are the
primary people using phones
while driving, but its actually
adults that are a much bigger
problem.
When it comes to distracted
driving, there are several forms
of distractions. There is a visual
distraction of taking your eyes
off the road, cognitive distraction where people daydream or
stop concentrating on driving,
and distraction where you take a
hand off the wheel. Texting incorporates all three of those
types of distractions, which can
cause multiple problems and
multiple distractions.

Hagerty was asked why a

double standard exists for police
officers, most of whom have laptops in their vehicles. While it is
legal for law enforcement to
have data terminals in their vehicles, distracted driving is distracted driving regardless of who
is doing it. Hagerty said hed
like to see the law apply to
everyone and is looking to have
restrictions placed on officers to
prevent their own form of distracted driving.
Im with you on that (limiting computer use in patrol vehicles), but there is a statute that
allows it for some reason,
Hagerty said. Cops are allowed
to do it, but they have to use

common sense, too. More and

more agencies us included
are working on a system that,
when youre moving at a certain
speed, you wont be able to operate your mobile data terminal
other than looking at the screen
when a call for assistance comes
in.
The Safe Communities program has made distracted driving an emphasis in schools to
educate the youngest drivers and
the dangers and potential consequences of distracted driving.
The more difficult problem is
educating adults who didnt
grow up on smart phone technology and havent been reminded
of the significant dangers dis-

tracted driving can create.

Educating adults is one of
the bigger challenges we face,
Hackman said. Were hoping to
get the word out that it is illegal
and that it is a major concern.
Most people dont really realize
until they or someone they know
has had a major incident where
distracted driving is involved.
We dont want people to get to
that point because, for too many
people, by that point its too
late.
Hackman will continue to
speak to local groups about the
dangers of distracted driving and
how easy it is to put the phone
down while a vehicle is in operation. Both she and Hagerty are

involved in the Toward Zero

Deaths program that looks to reduce and eliminate as many automobile fatalities as possible.
Theyre still concentrated on the
most obvious problems of
speeding and drunk driving, but
distracted driving is becoming a
bigger problem and, as such, is
becoming a bigger focus of the
program.
The bottom line is that people are dying from this, Hagerty
said. Youre not going to get
everyone to change, but the
more education we can provide,
the better our chances to get
more people to stop doing it. It
isnt worth dying to check out
your Facebook page.

Irish Pre-Party
continued from page 1

Im still a little dazed but Im

really honored to receive this
award.
The floor was then turned
over to Kathy Hennen, chamber
treasurer, standing in for president Mark Redemske, who congratulated Chamber Member of
the Year, John Rivers.
It was just 20 years ago that
the Rivers family came to Maple
Lake, said Rivers. Looking
back over the years weve had so
much support from so many people, it just doesnt get better than
that.
Rivers also told the crowd
that an award like this wasnt really given to one individual and
thanked the community, his sons,
David and Jeff, and his wife,
Jean. This is my first wife,
Jean, he joked as she joined him
at the podium to add her thanks
to the community for the award.
Still in his chefs whites, Harney Heeralall, owner of The V by
HH, was called out of the kitchen
to receive his Chamber Business
of the Year award. I thank the
Lord Jesus for bringing me
here, said Heeralall accepting
the award. Thanks also to my

daughters, Lauren and Maya,

theyve been the ones to encourage me and push me. Thanks to
the Chamber and the City of
Maple Lake and all of you who
are here. Thanks for all your support, I really appreciate it.
The evening ended with the
stylings of comedian, Roger
Radley, who drew laughs right
off the bat with his opening line,
I am so happy to be in Maple
Lake, I could just about....sleep.
His quick delivery and welltimed wit kept the crowd entertained with allusions to
everything from sticking your
arm out to stop a passenger while
driving to timely comments
about the over security conscious
world we live in.
All in all a successful evening
according to event chair Carrie
Parchem.
"I thought things were out of
the universe, said Parchem.
We had great community participation. The food by our Business of the Year, The V by HH,
was fantastic and the entertainment by comedian Roger Radley
was belly laughing funny and hit
home. "

Sports
Irish boys end season against Annandale
By Brenda Erdahl
Sports Writer

The 26-1 Maple Lake boys

basketball team had their worst
shooting night of the year against
the Annandale Cardinals, Tuesday, March 3, in the third round
of the Section 5-2A basketball
tournament, and lost 67-51 to the
neighboring team that would go
on to win a state tournament
berth three days later.
Now 26-2 on the season, the
Irish found themselves up against
a team that seemed to be peaking
at the right time. Maple Lake had
beaten the Cardinals 81-73 earlier in the season, but Tuesday
proved to be a bigger challenge
as the Cardinals handed them
their first loss since December.
The Irish just couldnt seem to
find the bottom of the basket like
they normally do that first half,
and by the break they trailed 3420. The second half showed little

topping them 33-31 for points.
The Irish shot an unusually
low 36 percent from the field and
were out-rebounded 39-33. Only
two players scored in double-digits for the team. David Stokman
put up 20 points and Chase Olson
battled for 14.
Our last game of the season
was a challenge. We didn't play
as well as we hoped, but you
have to give Annandale credit,
they are a very good team that
seems to be peaking at the right
time, Irish coach Tim Staloch
said. They were the better team
that night.
Annandale, who was seeded
No. 4, went on to upset the No. 1
seed in the south subsection,
Breck School, 65-42, for their
ticket to state.
Like every game this year
our players played extremely
hard and battled each possession,
but it just wasn't our night,
Staloch said.
The Irish finished the season
with an undefeated home record
of 14-0, won a Central Minnesota Conference championship
and set a school record for wins.
They have much to be proud
of, Staloch said.
There is always disappointment when the season comes to

an end, with the realization that

you will never again have this
particular group together. However, I can't say enough about
how enjoyable and rewarding
this team was to coach. They are
a great basketball team, but more
importantly, they are a great
group of young men. They
bought into the team concept
whole-heartedly, accepted their
roles, and had a lot of fun supporting each other.
We wish our seniors the best
of luck, he added. They will
definitely be missed in many
ways both on and off the court
and will have a lasting impact on
the future of Maple Lake basketball.
I want to thank the students
and the community for their
wonderful support. The number
of fans that showed up to many
of the games was very impressive and appreciated, he said.

7th grade girls are basketball champions Irish girls end

The Maple Lake 7th grade
girls travelled to Oakdale and
competed in the MYAS Grade
State Basketball Championships March 7-8, bringing
home a State Championship.
On Saturday, the girls
started out with a win over

Wayzata in the first round 3220 and then followed that up

with a 37-27 win over #1 seed
Eagan. Sunday morning, the
girls came out vs. Milaca, determined to get the title game.
The girls played great team defense and held Milaca to 1

point in the first half, en route

to a 27-18 win.
In the championship game,
the Maple Lake squad found
themselves trailing a talented
and feisty Faribault team 15-13
after a hard-fought first half.
The girls came out of halftime

focused on defense and it

showed. They held their opponent scoreless in the second
half, while tallying 10 points
themselves to claim the win.
With great coaching and amazing team effort they came out
on top.

season in playoffs
By Brenda Erdahl
Sports Writer

The Maple Lake girls basketball team ended its season,

Thursday, March 5, after a tough
match-up with No. 2 seed Foley
in the first round of the Section
5-2A tournament.
The Irish (No. 7 seed) went
into the game as the underdog,
pitted against one of the top
teams in the section that also happens to boast a 6-foot, 5-inch
senior center named Tara Dursharm who will be playing Division 1 basketball in St. Louis
next year.
Despite having such a hard
draw for the first round of the
playoffs, the Irish played with
heart and intensity from start to
finish, Maple Lake coach Adam
Ronnenberg said.
Unfortunately, Foley was just
too talented and dominated the
Maple Lake squad 63-49 at their
home gymnasium.
Maple Lake struck first,
jumping to a 2-0 lead; it was the
only lead they would have that
night. Faced with the Falcons
man defense, the Irish would
shoot 12 percent from the floor,
making only four baskets in the
first half.
It was the Irishs free-throw
shooting that kept them within
reach of the Falcons. They were
10 of 15 from the free-throw line
in the first half. By the break,
Maple Lake trailed 26-17.
The Irishs offense came alive
in the second half, but their defense couldnt manage the Falcons star center any longer.
Maple Lake cut the lead to
seven points early in the second
half, but struggled to handle the
ball against the pressure defense
of the Falcons. The Falcons continued to pound the ball inside for
easy scores and the Irish trailed
by as many as 16 points with
about six minutes to go in the
game.
After a time-out, Maple Lake
went on a quick 6-0 run to cut the
lead to 10, but couldnt get any
closer. After several fouls in an
effort to stop the clock and prevent Foley from scoring, the Irish
couldnt overcome the deficit
and lost 63-49.
Maple Lake was led by senior
Emily Webb who had 18 points.

Brooklyn Toedter had her second

double-double of the year, scoring 14 points and nabbing 14 rebounds. Linsey Rachel battled
for 12 rebounds and eight points.
Maple Lake out-rebounded
the Falcons 42-37, but Foley shot
42% compared to Maple Lakes
28%. The girls played incredibly hard and really stuck with the
game plan on defense, Ronnenberg said. There are only so
many ways to defend a player
who is 6-foot, 5-inches. If we
could have connected on a few
more shots in the first half, I
think we may have had a little
more confidence down the
stretch. Either way I am proud of
all the girls, particularly the seniors for their effort all season
long.
Later that week, Foley defeated Milaca to advance to
round three of the tournament
where they were to meet Annandale on Tuesday, March 10, at St.
Michael-Albertville. Annandale
is the No. 1 seed. The winner will
play either Watertown-Mayer or
Providence Academy at Halenbeck Hall in the championship
game on Friday, March 13, for
the right to go on to state.

America pageant!

continued from page 1

Held at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in Bloomington,
Minnesota, Becker and the others will be rated based on these
categories: service and achievement to school and community,
personal development, scholastic achievement, judges interview, poise and personality,
projection in formal wear and
general awareness of the world
around her.
The written portion of the
competition and transcripts of
grades had to be submitted by
February 20. At this point they
are 45% through the competition, Beckers mom, Sandy,

said.
According to its website, the

1) Take tax deductions for

capital loss. If your capital
losses exceed your capital
gains, the excess can be deducted on your tax return and
used to reduce other income,
such as wages, up to an annual
limit of $3,000, or $1,500 if
you are married filing separately. However, you may
deduct capital losses only on
investment property, not on
property held for personal use.
3) Advisory fees are tax-deductible. Dont feel like
spending money to save and
make money? Theres a
workaround. Before closing
the door on the possibility, inquire with a financial expert.
Most are happy to give a free
initial consultation, and you
dont have to be a millionaire
to make it worth your while.
4) Deduct a home-based office when used for your employer. If space in your home
is used exclusively and regularly for a trade, you can count
that as a deductible. Calculate
the square footage of your
home office and divide the
area of your office by the area
of your house. If the percentage is 14 percent, for example,
that represents the percentage
of your total home expenses
that can be allocated toward
the home office deduction. For
further questions, consult a
professional.
