the Cairn Hill Oldtimers on
March 15 at the Strathmore
Family Centre.
The players thoroughly
enjoyed themselves: whether
they were catching up with
old teammates or putting on
a show for the crowd.
It went very smoothly,
Colleen did a great job or-
ganizing, and we were just

able to show up to play and
have fun, said Neal Coulter,
NHL alumni and co-organizer of the event. I think both
teams had a lot of fun and
you get into that dressing
room, its just a great time,
lots of laughs.
There were some players
that had not changed from
their playing days that really
did make the atmosphere of
the game.
Archie Henderson has
100 different humorous lines
and he kept everybody really
light and loose, he said.
Coulters favourite part
of the event was just being
able to socialize with longtime friends and to be able

to share the good times with
fellow alumni.
Thats one of the things I
look forward to most as part
of the alumni is getting together for function like this
and guys come from all over
the place and you meet new
guys and this could be our
last alumni function this year
for skates, said Coulter.
Former Calgary Flames assistant coach Rich Preston
thoroughly enjoyed his experience at the game.
It always fun to get back
on the ice for players like us
and it doesnt matter how
old you are, Im in my 60s

and I still enjoy getting on
the ice, said Preston.
Theres some guys here
I played with professionally and others Ive played
against and its always good
to get together for a good
cause.
Preston thought the best
memory of the day was skating with the Timbits and
how much fun it was to relive when they were that age
and playing hockey.

Art vandalized at Lambert Centre

The bench called Belong that has
been on display in the Lambert Centre
will be finding a new home after vandals defaced the piece of art. At the end
of January Dahrlyne Knaus, who works
as an FCSS programmer in the building,
saw a father whose two young boys
picking at the bench. They had already
peeled off one doily and were working
on removing another. She mentioned to
the father that it was a piece of art and
asked if they could stop what they were
doing.
The father sat there on his phone
texting and didnt even look up, said
Knaus.
Angry at what she was seeing, she
stepped back into the FCSS office to
cool down. A few minutes later she
went back into the hallway and noticed
one of the two boys had taken the brochure rack and thrown it down on the
floor.
I went and picked it up and said excuse me, this is public property, and
the father gave me a dirty look and continued texting, said Knaus.
I really was very upset, its one thing
to do damage to the walls or the corkboards, but this was a piece of art. Not
that its okay for anything, but somebody put a lot of love, and sweat equity
into this, I was very upset.
Both Knaus and staff at the Strathmore Municipal Library have kind of
kept an eye on the bench since it first
was presented to the building.
Were really disappointed because
we were so excited to have a beautiful
piece of public art in this building. The
lobby is pretty drab and its just really
nice to feature local artists and organizations in that space so we are very
disappointed but we hope it can find a
good home where it will be well cared
for, said Rachel Dick Hughes, director
of library services. We do continue to
feature art in the library and we will
continue that I think some people
just need better education on the value
of art and how to respect property that
other people have worked for.
Approximately two weeks after the
initial incident, Wanda Reinholdt, Hope
Bridges Society Coordinator, was in the
Lambert Centre and noticed the damage
to the bench was worse.
I almost fainted because there were
more pieces that were hanging, more
doilies that were hanging, and then
there was a couple that had been totally
ripped off and paint had been taken
with it, said Reinholdt.
Because of the damage the bench will
now be removed from its location, and
could end up somewhere where the
public wont be able to enjoy it as they
could at the Lambert Centre.

Learning to communicate effectively
is a vital part of day-to-day life, whether
its so you can give directions to someone, or come across well in an interview. 4-H leaders know this, which is
why each year the members are required to take part in public speaking.
There are a lot of skills that the
members will learn through 4-H, communication is one of them, it could be
through presentations, a speech or even
emceeing. It is a requirement of 4-H because they see the value in that, said
Anita Kraus, a registered leader in 4-H,
and parent volunteer with the communications committee.
Public speaking is one of the top
fears worldwide, and learning how to
overcome it, and deal with the anxiety
related to it is an important skill.
By learning when theyre young
and building that confidence through
the 4-H program, when they grow into
adults they either arent afraid of it anymore or they really know how to deal
with it and people dont realize they
might have some nerves underneath the
surface, said Kraus.
On March 21 the Calgary Regional
4-H Communications Competition is being held at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
The Regional competitions are the
fourth level of competition for these 4-H
members. This is also the last level of
competition for the junior and intermediate members, but the top two senior
members will continue on to the Provincial 4-H competitions, said Kraus.
Six senior members will also get to
display their communication skills by
being the MCs in each competition.
There will be three public speaking
competitions and in the afternoon there
will also be three presentation competitions. The members are encouraged to
choose topics that they already have an
interest in. During the public speaking
section the members have to present
their prepared speech within a set time
frame.
Then each speaker will give a speech

on an impromptu topic with only a
minute to prepare their new one to two
minute speech.
The presentation competition also
consists of members presenting within
a certain time frame. Theyre then asked
a question on their topic by one of the
judges, which they must answer immediately.
By them speaking about something
that theyre interested in or they have a
passion about, its very easy for them to
talk about it, so its not so intimidating,
said Kraus.
It also makes it easier for them to
make the time frame because they
have the confidence in their topic. The
speech competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
at the Strathmore Civic Centre. The presentations will begin at 2 p.m.

county recognize that as well and
theyre on board, said Reinholdt. She
is also involved with the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective, which recently
brought forward a proposal to the town
and county about creating a policy for
art displays.
We just have to raise awareness and
develop the advocates everywhere for
our art so that if they see somebody
doing something to a piece of art were
all working together to keep it (whole).

investigating a theft from a
business. Sometime during the
night of March 15th unknown
suspect(s) gained access to the
property located on Slater road.
Suspect(s) cut a hole in UFAs
fence obtaining a fuel tank.

Local trick rider Avery Aleman,
11, is getting the opportunity
some riders only dream about.
On April 3, in Sydney, Australia,
Aleman will be representing Canada at the Sydney Royal Easter
Show.
Aleman is a member of the Canadian Trick Riding Association
and recently won the title of Elite
Trick Rider for 2014. She, and her

fellow Canadian Champions Cora
Croteu (Sundre) and Shelby Pierson (Cessford), make up Team
Canada.
Very few people get to go and
have this opportunity. Im very inspired to go and do it with some
amazing people like Jerri Duce
(and) Paige Callaway. I am very

Wheatland County is implementing Water Efficiency Rebate Program to help county

residents conserve water.
The county is offering rebates to those residents who
consider buying low-flow
fixtures such as toilets and
showerheads. The use of lowflow technology can help reduce water usage, thereby
lowering the residents environmental footprint.

This year, instead of all three choir groups attending the
Drumheller and District Music Festival, the Strathmore Childrens Choir opted to bring a clinician in for their choral
students.
Our oldest choir Finale will still be attending the Drumheller festival. Last year our adjudicator was able to come to
Strathmore to work with us as the weather had been so bad,
and it was such a positive experience for the choir members to sing for their families -when we drive to Drumheller
its more difficult for families to come and watch- that we
thought we would try this for a change this year, said Childrens Choir Director Loralee Laycock.
Dave Mikuliak came out to work with the Strathmore
Choir on March 12. He has been directing choirs of all age
levels for over 25 years, working in several school systems
and communities throughout southern Alberta.
I knew Dave years ago as a musical director of a play
that I was in, said Laycock. He is highly energetic, positive,
and in his words, believes in process over product. I felt
that was a great fit for our choir as my

goal is always to teach the importance
of having music in our lives.
Mikuliak also places an emphasis on
student understanding and recognition
of vocal practice, musicality, and expressivity to further the processes of
positive rehearsal techniques.
During the clinic Mikuliak listened to
the kids perform their prepared pieces
and then taught them different ways
they could improve on them. He also
spent time teaching the kids different
singing and choral techniques.
I feel it is always important for my
choirs to hear feedback from other musicians. By having an opportunity to
work with a clinician who doesnt see
them each week, they will be able to
learn new ways to work together as a
choir, said Laycock.
One of the things Mikuliak taught the
kids was that if the process of learning
to create music is the most important
thing, then the product would naturally
follow.
Laycock said the evening was both
a positive and educational experience
for all three choirs. Mikuliak worked
with each group on their level and gave
them ideas how to improve. The choirs
were happy to perform in front of their
parents, and Laycock said she was very
happy with the evening and how it
turned out.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced
our Conservative Governments intent to introduce legislation to keep Canadian families and
their communities safe by ensuring that the most
heinous criminals like Clifford Olson, will be sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility
of parole. This legislation will follow through on
our Governments 2013 Speech from the Throne
commitment to ensure that a life sentence means
a sentence for life.
We are building on our ongoing commitment
to keep Canadas streets and communities safe by
holding violent repeat offenders accountable and
ensuring that the rights of victims are considered
above the rights of criminals. The pending legislation will hold the most heinous perpetrators
of violence accountable and protect Canadians
from further violence by these individuals.
As your Member of Parliament, I have always
heard from you that you want assurances that
those who break the law are punished for their
actions. Year after year, I receive letters, e-mails
and phone calls asking for penalties to match the
severity of crimes committed. That is why this
week our Government will introduce legislation
to ensure that criminals who commit horrific
crimes face serious criminal penalties, and that
a life sentence in Canada means exactly that: a
life sentence.
We are ensuring that the Canadian justice system no longer allows the worst criminals to pose
a risk to Canadians, our families, or our communities. We are targeting individuals who commit
the most heinous crimes such as: those who plot
kidnapping or sexual assault that results in murder; those with such contempt for law and order
that they kill the police and correctional officers
who are charged with protecting our streets;

those who despise our values and way of life that
carry out deadly acts of terrorism; and those who
commit crimes of a particularly brutal nature.
In addition to the mandatory sentences discussed above, courts will have the discretion
to impose life sentences without parole in any
other first degree murder case or in circumstances where an offender previously convicted of
murder, or of an international killing under the
Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act,
commits another murder.
To address legitimate constitutional concerns,
this legislation will permit a criminal serving life
without parole to apply to the Minister of Public Safety for exceptional release after serving no
less than 35 years. Decisions on petitions of this
kind will rest with the federal Cabinet and will
ensure that the families of victims are able to
provide input on any such decisions.
The proposed legislation on life sentences
without parole would align Canadas criminal
justice approach with likeminded countries such
as the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the United
States, and Australia. These proposed measures
build on the Prime Ministers recent announcement of the Governments intent to introduce
legislation that would end the practice of making
early release available for repeat violent offenders.

Harper Government announces

enhanced lifetime support

Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot and Minister of State (Finance) is alerting local Canadian Veterans that the Hon. Erin
OToole, Minister of Veterans Affairs, has unveiled a proposed new financial benefit aimed at
providing financial stability to Veterans who are
moderately to severely disabled and their families.
This Retirement Income Security Benefit
would ensure that an eligible Veterans total annual income is at least 70 per cent of what he
or she received in financial benefits from Veterans Affairs Canada before age 65, said Sorenson. Monthly payments would be calculated on
a case-by-case basis, taking into account how
much the Veteran was receiving before age 65
and other sources of income he or she may have
beyond age 65.
Currently, the Earnings Loss Benefit upon

which many moderately to severely disabled Veterans rely is not available after the age of 65,
resulting in a drop in the Veterans annual income. The new Retirement Income Security Benefit would provide these Veterans with continued
assistance in the form of a monthly income support payment beginning at age 65.
The proposed Retirement Income Security
Benefit would work in concert with existing
services and benefits to establish a continuum
of support that spans a disabled Veterans entire life, explained Sorenson. It is designed for
those whose ability to save for retirement was
directly impacted by their service to our country.
Income support would also be extended to families through continued payment of a monthly
benefit to the Veterans survivor. This announcement responds directly to concerns raised by the
Veterans Ombudsman and the House of Commons Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Arrowwood River Wranglers

The Arrowwood River Wranglers welcomed 25
horse members ranging in age from 7-18 from
Wheatland District, including one member from
Stavely and one from Irricana to their second annual horse workshop.
They started the day by getting to know each
other and breaking into six teams. The members
painted horse brushes which turned out amazing!
Then the workday started we had the teams go
around the room to different ID stations were you
had to identify thing like parts of the horse, markings, colors, parts of the hoof, grooming supplies
and feed.
They had a mini multi judging clinic and practice, followed by make your own pizzas for lunch.
After lunch we had a horse bowl competition
with the team being asked questions from the 4-H
manual, we used a buzzer system which makes it
like a game show and a lot of fun.
The winners of the horse bowl where the team
of Emma Russian from the Stavely Club, Kate Darr
from Irricana and Payton Yule from the Standard
Club, Lyndsey Pearson and Matthew Wilbern both
from the Arrowwood Club.
We finished the day with a sundae bar. It was
a great, educationalday for the member and we
want to thank the Calgary Region for leading us
their buzzers and Wheatland Distict for funding
this event.

Fule for Thought
Our family dog is named Brodie. Hes now
15-years-old and weve started calling him Grandpa. He doesnt move as fast as he used, and sometimes his back leg will slide out on him.
We thought it was because our new house has
hardwood floors, but weve been told by the vet
that his legs arent getting strong nervous signals,
so they give out. I bet hes thrilled to have a lot of
hardwood, so that he can basically feel like hes
learning to ice skate! We also have a set of fairly
steep stairs to the basement, and there are times
hell sit at the bottom, look up, then look sadly
bark at us. Weve decided being 90 in dog years,
has earned him to right to get some elevator carries up and down the stairs. When he does go up
on his own, he has to use both back legs hitting
at the same time to make it. Its like hes making
an assault on Everest, because he has to stop part
way, rest, and then carry on!
Actually, the only time has really has any energy,
is right after he takes a poop. For a few minutes,
hes like a pup again he sprints in, races around
for a few minutes, and looks quite happy (or is
that relief?). Right after hes done, I will never understand why he feels the need to circle back, and
smell the poop. Hes got to know its there, does
he really have to double check what else would
be there!?
He had a recent vet check up to see if his bladder crystals have returned. Luckily, he had a really
good visit, and the vet was thrilled at how good he
looks and acts for a 90-year-old dog.
She kind of tricked me, or at least it felt like it
to me! She moved down to his hindquarters, and
asked me to come down there and hold his hips.
Now, she had been testing all his joints for pain,
and signs of arthritis, so I thought itd be more of
the same. Oh no, then she uttered the words: Im
going to express his anal glands now.

Express his anal glands, what the heck does that
mean? I found out immediately. Theres no real
way to prepare yourself for a smell like that, and of
course to be thorough, Doc had to show me! The
smell that greeted me, as I was almost face to butt
with him, was horrendous! It was like a mixture of
dog crap, rotten potatoes, with a just hint of death
thrown in, for good measure! Now, I was a janitor
for six summers in high school and university, so
Ive had to clean my share of all kinds of messes.
None of that prepared me for the sheer horror
of this! I felt like the smell was all around me, in
me, on my clothes I could almost taste it and I
wanted to gag. Thats when she said, the old dogs
are the worst, but Brodie is nothing compared to
an old black lab I did last week. I thought I was
going to be sick!
I couldnt believe it, I had just smelled the worst
thing ever, and she had shown me what she expressed! Smelling it, then being able to see it, was
almost too much! I had to move to the front end!
It was then that Brodies and my eyes met. I
mustve looked awful, because he had a strange
look on his face well it looked like a strange
gesture he made! Then it hit me, his look was
more like, I trusted you. You saw me shake all the
way into this room, and you still let her do that?!?
I felt guilty right away, and promised him a treat,
forgetting that hes also stone deaf! We left, and he
stared me down all the way to DQ. Only a cheeseburger could make it up to him, and so we dined
in the truck. I passed on sharing it with him this
time I had lost my appetite! Its just as well I
still need to drop some blubber.

Extra caution on the roads

With the unusually warm
March weather drivers are being asked to take extra caution
on the roads. Some people have
brought their motorcycles out,
excited for the warm weather,
and not factoring in the gravel
still on the streets or other conditions that make it dangerous
to ride at this time of year.
Besides watching out for motorcyclists, there are also more
kids out also taking advantage
of the opportunity to be outside.
Everybody has to be aware,
especially people driving cars,
have to be aware theres a lot
more factors out on the road
now with kids crossing the road
more often and kids playing
in playground areas, kids playing in their front yard, kids riding their bikes, theyre playing
sports, theyre chasing after basketballs, said Strathmore RCMP
Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly.
Motorcycles (are) more difficult to see, theyre in your blind
spots. Theres a number of different things that way just in
general that drivers have to be
more aware of.
Not that you shouldnt be
paying attention before but
theres a number of different
things that are now more prevalent on our roads for the next
six months. Be aware and slow
down.
Another issue Reilly has seen
in the mornings is people driving with their windows covered
in frost.
Thats an offense, you cant

have frost on your windows, and
Im not talking a little bit here or
there where your scraper didnt
cover it, Im talking they didnt
put a scraper to it, said Reilly.
If your windows are dirty and
then you cant see because of
the sun shining on them, thats
also a ticketable offense.
Reilly said there are certain
things police have to focus on
and at this time of year that is
one of those things
You have to make sure your
car is safe and you have everything working, said Reilly.
With the nice weather its a
great time to get out and check
to make sure everything on
your vehicle is working, including your lights, and your fluids
are topped up.

The evolution of rodeo queens

being done!
We have a Ways and Means and Entertainment Committee at our Legion who does their best
to provide the Legions members with entertainment and fun things to do. For Valentines Day,
we had a karaoke night which was attended by a handful of members. Then, we advertised
for a St. Patricks Day party last Saturday night, for which we had live entertainment. A total of
fourteen members attended. We constantly hear criticism about how the Legion never does
anything for its members. BUT! WE NEED YOU TO SHOW UP FOR THESE EVENTS WHEN WE
DO!!! What would YOU do, if only fourteen out of almost 500 members attend? If ANYONE
has ANY ideas about what they would like the Legion to do, please call the above number and
leave your suggestions. IF NOBODY SHOWS, THERE WILL BE NO LEGION FOR YOU TO COME
TO!!

Siksika Nation held a Family Community Creating Resiliency conference on March 6 at the Deerfoot Sportsplex in Siksika. On
hand to talk about how they experienced resiliency in their lives were Riley Good Eagle (l-r), Carly Weasel Child, Alicia Maguire
and UFA Bisons forward Trygve Many Guns.
On March 8th, 2015, we lost yet another decorated Veteran. You may or may not have known
him, but to his family he was extra-special. In December of this year, he would have been
100 years old. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for some 66 years: #264 and
#284.
Please help the Royal Canadian Legion and his family pay respect to Veteran Edward Carl Sten
of the Regina Rifle Regiment. MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

Dairying had its ups and downs, especially when the power went off, and you
had 35 cows to milk, or you got 100 per
cent hailed out in September. In those
hard times, you found you had good
neighbours who would help with the milking and brought oats by the
truckload.
In 2007, Robert passed
away at the age of 82. June
spent 15 years working in
accounting for her daughter
Linda Murray.
Their community activities
included teaching Sunday
School; Robert played softball for the Lyalta Team, and
for seven years June was the
secretary for the Lyalta Community Club. June loves quilting - and has made quilts for
all of her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, as well
as Quiet Books. She attends the Hope
Community Church in Strathmore.
Recent changes in Lyalta include the
new Muirfield Housing Development and
the paving of the Lyalta Road.
Since moving to Strathmore in 2005,
June has seen the following changes
growth in the number of schools including
new ones, housing developments, reduction in postal services, all the new stores
along the highway, closure of many stores
downtown and the advance of computer
technology.
June Stewarts ancestors originated in England, and came to

Canada in 1907. Joseph Harold Payne was born in 1897 in Ontario, and came west with his family to Calgary in 1907, then
moved to Cheadle in 1909.
Edith May Grimshaw was born in 1905 on the family farm,
which was located in the vicinity of Eagle Lake
Hill, where her parents homesteaded. Her father
Harold was a ditch rider on the CPR irrigation
system, which meant they moved home quite frequently.
June was born in Lyalta in 1931, the youngest
of three. She attended Turner School, south of Lyalta through Grade 8, followed by Kathryn High
School through Grade 11. From 1945 to 1962, her
parents owned and ran the Lyalta Store, which
was also a Post Office.
Robert Stewart was born at Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, which was the closest hospital to
the family farm at Dalemead. He was the eighth
of nine children. Robert attended Cheadle Butte
School, then Turner School. Following his fathers
illness in 1945, Robert took over Dads general
trucking business and managed the farm.
Robert was a frequent visitor to the Lyalta Store, as it was his
job to pick up the mail, and it was only natural for him to meet
June there. They were married in 1949, and have two daughters,
seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Before they
started dairy farming in spring 1959, Robert had spent the previous 10 years working in the oil patch, and was a repairman for
Lyalta Mutual Telephone Company.
Robert purchased 10 dairy cows, thereby starting their dairy
farming which lasted for the next 29 years, followed by nine years
farming with beef cows. He was a school bus driver for Wheatland
County (Lyalta run) for 14 years. In 1967, they bought the family farm from Roberts mother. June and Robert worked together
on the farm, and there was nothing she wouldnt try. Did you
ever hear of a small town girl operating a tractor while pulling a
binder? June was that girl, and 29 years later she was still doing
the baling. It took a lot of patience, but perseverance won out in
the end. One day June was seeding wheat with the tiller, until the
John Deere started to slow down, and looking back, she found
to her amazement that the tire had fallen off the tiller. Needless

Well another winter has come, and hopefully gone with spring on its way!
The Strathmore Handibus has had yet another very successful year in
2014, completing approximately 6,000 trips for our seniors and physically
handicapped clients. We are thankful to all our clients for their tremendous
support as they consistently communicate to us their appreciation of
the service. We continue to be grateful for the support from the Town of
Strathmore and Wheatland County. It is through this community support,
municipal support and financial supporters that we continue to develop
our service, purchase new vehicles and train our staff to the highest of
standards.
With the many shopping trips planned ahead, we would just like to remind
our clients; if it cant fit on your lap on the way home, leave it in the store
for your next trip. This is for everyones safety.

Chinook Financial announced strong year-end results for 2014,

sharing a $2.2 million dividend with members and introducing
new president, Scot Hadden at its annual general meeting this
week.
Scot Hadden was appointed to the role of President of Chinook

Despite saying he may take a year off
after the 2014 ride, Armand Pinel once
again finds himself drawn to return to
the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.
His father, who is one of his inspirations, lost his battle to the disease in
2014 after a 14-year-long fight.
What keeps making me go back is
just the fact that Ive known a lot of people in my life, personally, close to me, or
even just through people I know, that
are affected by this, said Pinel.
I just think that they need funds to
kind of keep working and make progress. I have read up on some progress
that has been made in certain areas and
to me it just makes it feel worth it to
continue giving my support.
This is the fifth year for Pinel doing
the ride, and this time hes trying something new to raise funds for the Enbridge Ride, which benefits the Alberta
Cancer Foundation.
Pinel is a registered massage therapist
with the Wellness Within Centre and on
March 29, for 12 hours straight, he will
be offering 30 minute massages for a
minimum $45 donation.
All of that would go to the Alberta
Cancer Foundation, so as soon as I was

done with that person I would put the

donation through right then and there
online. Then they would have a donation tax receipt e-mailed to them by the
Alberta Cancer Foundation, said Pinel.
I was just trying to think of a way
to get some donations, in but also have
people get something out of it at the
same time.
Because it is only one day, Pinel is offering an incentive for those who want
to donate but maybe cant make it in on
the 29.
Even if you want to support what Im
doing and you cant make it that day,
as long as you do a donation on that
day I will basically just give what will
be an equivalent of a half hour massage
voucher to use at a later date, said Pinel.

Afterwards, contact Pinel so he can
make sure your name is put down for
the voucher.
His hope is to raise $1,000 from the
massages. They will be done at the Wellness Within Centre (118 2nd Ave) and

Spring is almost here and that means
Hope Bridges Society is ready to accept
participants for their spring programs.
The weekly Sing Your High Notes will
be continuing at the hospital on Tuesday afternoons, and Up-Cycling will also
continue on Thursday mornings at the
Hope Bridges Studio.
There are a few new things coming
this spring. At the Strathmore Parent
Link Centre, the third Wednesday evening of every month there will be UpCycling from 7-9 p.m. Up-cycling is taking recycled materials and turning them
into art.
The Painted Quilt Bees just wrapped
up round two and this spring and summer it will be moving to become weekend bees on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.

between the library, Hope Bridges and

community connections, on April 28.
Were developing relationships and
opportunities in the county, and working with county leaders in each of the
communities to find the best artistic opportunity for each community. This is
going to take time because each community has unique needs and desires,
said Reinholdt.
Zentangle is easy for everyone to
learn. Its repetitive art, and people
who practice it tend to relax and relieve
stress.
Another new program coming thanks
to Hope Bridges is the Photography Tips
which will run May 30 in Strathmore
from 1-4 p.m. and June 6 from 1-4 p.m.

In addition to the regular registration
info, the facilitator Kenzie Kettenbach, a
Rockyford resident, would also like to
know what types of cameras people will
be bringing so that she can prepare.
Were also accepting donations from
artists for our annual art auction which
is happening April 25, said Reinholdt.
The Art Auction will be held at the
Strathmore Golf Club, and tickets are
$20

all adults of all abilities and skill levels.

For four UFA Bison fans, the memories cherished at arenas where their
beloved team has played will never be
forgotten.
From the one and only Macs midget
tournament win or the epic five-overtime league final almost 10 years ago
a game many around the community
still talk about are unforgettable moments.
But most of all a strong friendship
has been created and they all can enjoy
some great Bison hockey together.
The fans and the good support they
get in Strathmore, but hockey is the
main thing, its been really good hockey, Lucy Hanson, who has been coming to games for 18 seasons.
Her most favourite moment of coming to the games so far has been the
boys winning the Macs title.
My favourite thing was when we
won the Macs tournament, but to come
to the rink and just to get out and meet
the people, parents and just the camaraderie, said Hanson. We go to all their
games at the Macs, I dont think weve
missed a game. We go to all the different arenas and during the season if we
can, go to some of the other games in
Calgary.
She believes that the program is one
of the best in the midget leagues and
her favourite player is former Bison and
current Calgary Flame Mason Raymond.
For John Cooper, watching Bison
games for 20 years has just been a real
enjoyment for him to come to the rink
and cherish the atmosphere.
Its a great night out, you cant beat

because these kids are really trying, its
not a business with them, its a game,
said Cooper.
He doesnt have a favourite player
but has really just enjoyed watching the
team year-after-year.
I cant tell you who my favourite
player is theyre all my favourite
players. Theyre all good kids trying to
do something, said Cooper.
The fan support the team receives,
for him, has been the best in the league.
I think its great. You look at Calgary, they dont get near as much fans
as we do, said Cooper. I think Ill support them as long as I live.
Johns son, Randy, has joined his dad
through all the seasons and has enjoyed
every minute of every game.
I like the Bisons, its a good brand of
hockey, its right next to junior hockey
and nothing else compares to it as far
as Im concerned, said Randy Cooper.
I like coming to watch the kids play,
whether they win or lose, were always
there to watch them and support them.
He recalls from the first time they
stepped on the ice until now how productive the team has been.
It seems like it was yesterday when
they first came to Strathmore but it has
been a good run, said Randy. It seems
like weve been getting better quality
players all the time.
Another fan, who is well known
around the rink as Hogie, has noticed
the year-by-year change with hockey
and has noticed how the Bisons have
benefitted from it.
The way things have changed over
the years, with better skaters, shooters
and bigger kids has been great, said
Hogie.
He has been a big supporter of the
town and caught on to the hockey
scene fairly quickly here.
I love Strathmore, thats why I moved
here and support the teams, said Hogie. You see the same people, a lot of
friends made here and its a great feeling.
His favourite moment was the fiveovertime game back in the 2004-2005
season and his favourite players were
Mason Raymond and Dan Bertram.

represented our town and played four of the

It was a great weekend of ringette as Strathmore played host
to the U12B Provincial Championship March 13-15 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The 12 teams, including the
hometown Strathmore Ice Storm,
showed heart and determination
in many close games that were
played throughout the tournament.
It was a fun-filled weekend,
starting off Friday morning at 9
a.m. with a coaches meeting and
then the U12 teams hitting the ice
for some competitive games of
ringette, said Jacqueline Kenney,
Strathmore U12B ringette coach.
The day was finished off with
the opening ceremonies, fun skills
competition and a banquet con-
sisting of 370 participants, parents

and volunteers.
The festivities surrounding the
event were successful as well.
The banquet was a great way to
bring all the competitors together
for an evening of fun and bonding, said Kenney. The rest of the
weekend was filled with fast-paced
ringette games ending on Sunday
with the gold medal game.
She could not have been more
proud of how her team competed.
A big congratulations to our
U12B Strathmore Ice Storm, who
played their hearts out and gave
the fans the best performance.
As their head coach, I knew this
weekend was going to be super
tough and hard-fought battles, and
I couldnt be prouder of my 13
girls and the heart and determination they showed on the ice, said
Kenney. Also a big shout out to
my team staff that I was fortunate

enough to have on the bench, Leanne Sauve, Casey Grant, Guy Bailie and Dorianne Perras, you all
made the weekend something the
girls will never forget.
Kenney ccommended the support staff that made this tournament run accordingly.
This provincials would not
have been made possible without
the help of the volunteers from
around Strathmore and area. A
big thank you goes especially to
Charla Flett, Tami LeMoine, Anna
Wylie, Chad Gillies, Sonny Warrack, Kim Bailie and myself who
all helped organize this event and
made it wonderful, said Kenney.
Thank you as well to all the
U12B parents, U10 ambassadors,
U14B Ice Rebels and board members who went above and beyond.

The Rockyford Ringers U16B ringette team defended their provincial title for the third straight
season in Fort Saskatchewan on March 15.
I think we should be very proud of the accomplishment. Weve got nine kids on the team
and who comes out to play is who is on the
team, said team manager Fiona Elder. It went
very well, they won all of their games through
the round robin, quarter and semi finals so it
was good.
The efforts were consistent throughout the
tournament in all the games.
In their first game, they were down by one
with nine seconds left in the game, they tied it
up, it went into overtime and they won it in the
five minute sudden death overtime, said Elder.
What has made this run special is that it has
been the same group of girls that have been together on this streak.
Typically its every second year because of
the age group, but this the same group that
had to move up last year and combine two age
groups to make a team. Eight of the girls have
played together for the last three years, said Elder. Last year we had two that joined up and
those two moved up to another team this year.

competition thinking that were probably neither the best or

He has tried a few different approaches to get
the boys game ready.
Im trying an approach where we got some bigger, stronger guys, so theyre going to get leaned
on. The last three or four ice times have been intensive taking the puck to the net hard, a little less
finesse and more speed and power, said Klemmensen.
The make up of the Braves will be a smaller
compared to other peewee teams that will be in
the tournament.
I think realistically, for a peewee team, we
probably have a smaller team. Were on the bottom end of things size wise, said Klemmensen.
For lack of size, the team will have to make up
for that with speed and skill.
If we want to play in straight lines and drive
the puck to the net and play a power, speed game
more so than a finesse fancy entry game, I think
well have a good chance, said Klemmensen.
Weve had the best goaltender in the league
this year and hope to get the same goaltending
weve had all year, thatd be a good head start.
The Braves (Zone 6) began play on March
19(4:30 p.m.) against Zone 5 in Olds.
Meanwhile, the Wheatland Chiefs will have
some familiarity with three of the four opponents
in their pool and will know what to expect from
them.

The UFA Bisons are off to the

league final for the first time in
10 years to face the CAC Gregg
Distributors, after grinding out a
4-3 win over the Calgary Buffaloes on March 14 in Calgary to
sweep the series 3-0.
The Buffaloes threw everything they had, but the Bisons
was able play solid defense and
got some key saves from Kurtis
Chapman to preserve the victory.
Assistant coach Sandy Henry
could not have been more proud
of this special group and what
they have been able to accomplish so far this postseason.
Im kind of speechless, its
just such a tremendous team. We
never see anyone give up, we
never see anyone thinking were
done, said Henry. I made the
comment to some of the guys
when they scored the third goal
and got ahead of us 3-2, I said
geez guys, they sure left a lot of
time on the clock for us to win
this thing.
The Buffaloes seemed to lose
their momentum after they had
taken the lead and let the Bisons
take control of the game from
that point on.
We started the process where
2015-2016
know we lost that last game but weve been playing good hockey and deserve to be there, said
head coach Devin Olson.
Olson is not too concerned with how they stack
up against the competition.
Our first game is against Taber which we handled pretty easily this year and then Red Deer
Elks is the next team we play and theyll be pretty
good, said Olson.
The top team out of Calgary, weve played
once and we beat them 1-0. Weve played Peace
River and thats our other game, like just in the
past northern teams arent as good as our (south
teams).
He is not wanting to change the match ups too
much and go with the strategy that has been implemented all year.
Weve been playing well, the guys are finally
clicking on how we want everything set up and
done. Well get to play a minimum of four games
so the more we can work on perfecting a lot of
that helps finishing, said Olson.
Olson added that the keys to success will be
shooting the puck frequently and playing keeping
the shifts short.
The Chiefs opened up against Taber (9:15 a.m.)
on March 20 in Red Deer while the second game
will be the same day against the Red Deer Elks

and what kind of a team are
we, said Henry. Were always a

good team in the third, we will
win this game if we put the effort in.
Cameron, Barrett Sheen, Will
Conley and Austin Wong scored
in the series clinching victory.
The Herd lost and tied CAC
earlier
in
the year, but
Henry is confident in their
game plan.
I like our
team against
them, theyve
got more size.
I dont think
they skate as
well as we do
and certainly dont think they
move the puck as well as we
do, said Henry.
Their goaltending looks solid.
I think were just going to come
at them and our game plan will
be the same, were going to roll
our lines as much as we can.
He added that both teams will
be coming out physical and will
be a battle in the corners and
along the wall.
Game 1 is set for March 20
in Edmonton at the Bill Hunter
Arena (7:45 p.m.), while Game
2 is March 22 in Strathmore (2
p.m.). Game 3 will be March 25
back in Edmonton (7:45 p.m.).

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks senior boys basketball team learned how
to play high-end basketball at zones in
Okotoks on March 13-14.
Coach Tony Irving was impressed
with what his boys were able to accomplish as an eighth seeded team.
We went to zones being seeded
eighth, which meant we had to play the
first place team, which is St. Josephs
out of Brooks. They were a tough team
to play against because theyre incredibly fast and really quick with their
hands, and also theyre ranked fifth in
the province, said Irving.
We held our own with them, we
were within eight points with about 20
minutes left to go in the game and just
too many steals in the offensive end
caused us a lot of difficulty in the end
of the game.
The boys were relegated to the consolation game because of a loss to
Drumheller, but ended off with a dominating victory.
We beat Three Hills in the consolation game by 20, he said.
Irving felt this was a real positive
note to end the season on.
I think so in terms of the fact that we

didnt do well within our league, we did

well in tournaments. But in light of the
fact we hadnt done well in our league
and having a lot of the same teams in
our league that were in the zone final,
we didnt do too badly, said Irving.
There were immense improvements
in the whole season and it showed on
the court.
Probably the two biggest things
were team defense and learning what
to do offensively outside running an offense, said Irving.
He added that the Grade 10s and 11s
would have to step into more of a leadership role to fill the void of the graduating Grade 12s.
As for the junior varsity girls, they
battled hard and placed fifth at zones
in Canmore.
Zones went really well, we lost our
first game, the girls just couldnt get energized, but then they played really well
the rest of the tournament. We ended
up winning the consolation side, so we
took fifth overall, said coach Deanna
Sample.
Definitely the highlight of the season was the silver medal in the St. Joesphs tournament in Brooks.
Throughout the season, the offense
gained more points per game and the
fitness level helped get them through
games.
We went from averaging 20-25 per
game to closer to 40-50 points a game.
Overall, our passing and strength and
conditioning got better, said Sample.
She also thought the level of play
came a long way as the year went along,
as well as the teams ability to adapt to
the plays on the fly.
SHS fall short at zones

The zone-hosting Strathmore

High School Spartans girls basketball team played their hearts
out, but fell short losing to Bert
Church in the zone banner contest and the second provincial
berth game to Chestermere.
The team was plagued by
injuries to key players and the
short bench showed at times
throughout the tournament.
The girls never gave up and
we always believed that we had
chance and I think we did, said
girls head coach Dion Galandy.
He believed that the game
plans were executed and the
girls left it all out on the court.
I dont know if we could
have done anything differently,
we just played as hard as we
could and the result just was not
there, said Galandy. The effort was there but unfortunately
sometimes in sports it doesnt
end up being the way you want
it to be.
The short bench became an
issue when the girls were trying
to over-play the situation.
When you have a short
bench, you tend to want to do
more than you think you should
and so I think if anything the
girls tried too hard, said Galandy.

the Zone Championship

but the girls faced a tough task
of maintaining that type of play.
He was satisfied with the season other than the fact that there
was no provincial trip involved.
We didnt meet our goals
which was to medal at provincials, but what we ended up
with in terms of able bodies at
the end of the year, I think well
look back at this and say this
was a great year, said Galandy.
Boys head coach Kyle Larson
thought they were right there in
their two games they played at
zones in Okotoks and felt that
they made their opponents battle for points.
We played HTA in out first
game, who is the number three
ranked team in the province.
The boys competed really hard,
we were down four at the half
to a team that is bigger, faster,
stronger and they showed that

In the second game we
played George McDougall and
we competed well for the first
half, our youth and inexperience played a factor as well.
Larson admits there is a bright
future ahead for the boys program.
For the boys, there is a lot to
look forward to. We lose four
Grade 12s this year but we have
a lot of strength coming in with
our 10s and 11s. Next year
should be a good year as well
but theyll have to prove that,
said Larson.
Despite being young, there
will be a core group of players
returning next year.
We were very young having
a lot of Grade 10s on the team
and out of 13 boys, nine will be
returning. Were going to have
a nice starting point for next
year, said Larson.

The Gleichen Figure Skating and Canskate programs saw a decrease in participation this season
with many skaters going to Strathmore to skate
in a bigger club.
I think thats something we got to work on,
this year has probably been the first weve had
dwindling numbers, said Brown.
The skaters who are still participating in Gleichen are the ones that have kept the club running
this season.
We have quite a few young Starskaters coming up, so wed like to keep the club going, said
Denise Brown, the clubs treasurer.
She admits the fundraiser efforts throughout

the year at their events have helped the clubs
operation immensely.
We did casino, cash calendars (and) just little
bits like raffle prizes at our competitions and fundraising through the club, said Brown.
One event that has helped financially is the annual carnival; the skaters put on quite the performance in the production of Frozen on March 14.
Its probably a month of practicing once a
week, the kids practice for a couple of hours,
said Brown. They each have a solo theyre usually assigned when youre doing the StarSkate
programs. We usually incorporate the carnival so
theyre not learning too many new moves in their
solos.

in the very entertaining games
that were played on March 14.
We started the league to
get interest back in curling, try
something new, and try to get
people back out to check the
sport out, said Cory Alce, Carseland Curling Club president.
Anybody can do it juniors and

The sport involves some
slightly different rules and a
game that has modifications to
curling.

theyre going to bring more people out, so hopefully next year
we can have it bigger, better and

The annual Strathmore

Curling Club Mens Bonspiel
saw many intense, exciting
draws, including a junior
team making it to one of the
finals.
It was great, there were
a lot of really good games,
a lot of local teams in it this
year which was good to see,
said Brent Ashlee, tournament organizer.
He was impressed with
the compete level of the junior team and their success
against the more experienced men curlers.
We had one kids team in
here, theyre all around between 14 and 16 years of
age, said Ashlee. Theyve
came in just to have some

fun and they made one of
the finals and didnt expect
win, but did really well.
Team Adams, the junior
team, based in Calgary and
has Strathmore product John
Damen as lead, had a very
successful tournament in the
eyes of his coach.
Theyve been opening
their arms to us and the
nice thing is a whole bunch
of people are watching him
and theyre cheering him
on, said coach Murray Adams of Damen. I could not
be prouder of him,

the dinner and auction night
where players were sold off
to teams.

Five
Strathmore
players have helped propel the
Okotoks-based Rocky Mountain Raiders to the provincial
championship series in the
AMBHL.
Locals Lucas Muenchrath,
Joel Krahenbil, Cole Clayton,
Tyler Strath and Kelton Travis have all made an impact
for the triple-A bantam team.
Raiders head coach Mickey
Kluner has seen something
very unique about each of
these players.
Forward Lucas Muenchrath
made the team on his second
year of tryouts. He has been
a regular contributor, brings
good size and strength to the
table. Hes a great kid, definitely has a bright future and
some big hockey left in him
for this upcoming series,
said Kluner. From a standpoint, hes not one of our top
three or four guys but hes
been consistently involved
in terms of production, reliability. Hes definitely got
the skill set to be a top six
scorer.
He admits maturity has
made a big difference in
Muenchraths game.
The maturity of being a
second year, he grew a little
more, a good sized kid, his
foot speed improved coming

into this year where the first
year it was lacking with the
physical strength and readiness for that, said Kluner.
He compared forward Joel
Krahenbil to Joe Thornton in
the way he plays.
We jokingly were calling
him Jumbo this year because he has a lot of similarities to Joe Thornton, size,
strength, winning his battles and great vision, said
Kluner. Hes equally one of
the top skilled guys on our
team, a soft spoken kid that
is heard by his play.
Kluner added that with
Krahenbils consistent play, it
had allowed him to be used
in more situations as he can
score, play defense and can
use his size.
Cole Clayton has seen a lot
of minutes this season on the
back end because of his consistent play.
His vision of the ice is really good. Hes slick with the
puck, got a great shot, not
terribly physical but on the
same token he holds his own
in all battles and has a great
attitude, said Kluner. He
definitely looks to rush the
puck and join the rush, not a
stay-at-home guy.
Tyler Strath is one of the
bigger guys on the backend
and one of the leaders as he

at learning the ropes of expectation levels and he had
his struggles but at the same
time has lots of valuable insight on what it takes to be
a top d-man in this league,

Defenceman Kelton Travis
did not play an elite level of
hockey a season ago and is
probably one of the better
stories to come out of the
team this season.
He was one of the more
feel good stories of the year,
you know having all the other players playing bantam
triple-A or double-A, said
Kluner. Kelton did not play
either he played bantam
1 and the coin he made from
that into this level and being
a regularly relied on player
hes that guy that made
that massive jump.
He was able to make the

jump because of some assets
he already possesses.
There are so many variables there with size, physicality and skating. His skating from last year to this year
has improved a lot, said
Kluner. Through tryouts he
was just a physical force that
with any coach, it makes you
look twice.
The Raiders have advanced
to the league final and are
currently battling Fort Saskatchewan in the best-of-five
championship series.
After splitting the first two
games of the series, the Raiders will travel to Fort Saskatchewan for the next two
games this coming weekend.
Game 5, if necessary, will be
in Okotoks on March 24.
The winner of the series
will go on to the Western
Canadian Bantam Triple-A
Championship in Winnipeg
from April 2-5.

The local midget double-A team
could not take a stranglehold on
the series in Game 2 as Red Deer
won 2-1 in double overtime to tie
the series at one game apiece on
March 15 at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
We didnt start like we wanted
to, we needed to get those early
goals and it didnt happen, said assistant coach Shadoe Stoodley.
We were gripping our sticks too
tight and not playing the way we
shouldve been the whole game
but our third period and overtime I
thought was pretty good.
Red Deer did a outstanding job
getting in the shooting lanes, which
led to the lack of production.
Its frustrating when you get
there and get it up top trying to get
shots through and theyre knocking them down, said Stoodley.
Their goaltender played pretty
good tonight, we didnt challenge
him enough like we shouldve like
we did the first game.
Kyle Rosolowski scored the lone
goal in the overtime loss.
Game 1, on March 13, saw the
Chiefs get out to a quick 3-0 lead
and were able hold on, despite a
late Red Deer surge, for a 4-3 victory.
We came out flying and chased
their goalie, which is good and
exactly how we want to start. In
the second we came out thinking the game was over and scored
two goals in the first minute, said
Stoodley.
From there we beared down
and started playing the rest of the
game and played very well.
Grady Strath, Jayden Smith, Kaleb Robinson and Chris Rebeyka
scored in the opening game win.
Games 3 and 4 will resume on
March 27 and 28 in Red Deer with
both games starting at 7:45 p.m.

Marlisa Caroline Wolfe (Lowe) died

suddenly on Thursday March 5,
2015 leaving her blessed children
Dustin, Taylene, and Joey as well as the love of
her life, Tray Graham Ogloff, in her everlasting love.
Marlisa was born in Calgary, Alberta on December
14, 1964 to Marjorie and the late Richard Lowe.
She was a sister to Randy, Garnett, Derek, Murray, David, Shawna and the late Wesley. She was
a loving mother, sister, daughter, aunt, niece, partner and friend. From dancing and singing with the
Calgary Safety Round Up to styling hair and turning
heads with her incredible beauty, Marlisa lived a
life filled with love and laughter. She was a proud,
supportive and encouraging Mother who will be
dearly missed and in our hearts forever. A Funeral
Mass and Celebration of Marlisas life was held on
Tuesday March 17, 2015 at Hope Community Covenant Church (245 Brent Blvd., Strathmore, Alberta)

Susan died peacefully at Strathmore Hospital after
a long battle with cancer. She is survived by her
husband, Rick; sons Ian and Tyler (Angela); granddaughters Rachel and Kaitlin; her mother Jean
Scholes; brothers Steve (Caroline) and Geoff (Carolyn) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Susan was predeceased by her father, Alan Scholes.

owner of Colins Automotive. There will be a celebration of his life at Hope Community Covenant
Church on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 2:00pm

(Mike) and Amy (AJ) Smith and step-daughter Tamara James (Richard), grandson Raymond James.
Colin Roland Smith is the son of Isaac Smith and
Loraine Smith, Grandson of Ralph and Rebecca
Smith (Late), Helen and Gordon Haines (late) brother to Cathie (Bruce) Turner (Bracebridge), Larry (Angie) Smith, Robert (Dawn) Smith (Port Perry), Danny
(Jackie) Smith (Castleton). Uncle to many nieces,
nephews as well as great nieces and nephews.
Friends, too many to list. He will be greatly missed.
Colin was born in Bishops Cove Newfoundland. As
you all know, Colin was a simple man in that things
were pretty much black and white. In the 1980s
and 1990s, Colin volunteered many thousands of
hours to the R.C.M.P. as an auxiliary member. He
was very quick witted, and had a tremendous
amount of common sense. Although he was a very
talented mechanic, he was more talented at putting
details together on a criminal case, and in my opinion would have been better suited on our team as
a policeman. He was often three steps ahead of the
criminal we were trying to catch. Colin, of course
was the owner and operator of Colins Automotive in
Strathmore, the place where police cars that should
have been condemned, were always put back into
good working order to serve another day !!! A place
where the local policeman were always welcomed
and often got to bond with the local farmers.
If there is a Heaven, he will be in it, in the most
elaborate mechanics shop there is, with all the latest inventions and every tool know to man.

Youth Justice Committees work with the government

in administering the Extra Judicial Sanctions Program.
For a youth to be eligible for Extra Judicial Sanctions,
they must have committed an eligible offence, accept
responsibility for their actions, and agree to participate
in the program. If they meet these criteria and there
is a Youth Justice Committee in the community
where they reside, the case is automatically referred
to that committee. Some Committees also take on
additional roles such as mentoring youth just released
from serving time in custody, as well as educating the
community about youth crime.
Our Committee asks for a one (1) year commitment
at minimum. We meet on the first Tuesday of every
month or more often depending on our case load.

All eyes are on the bride and groom on their
wedding day. Feeling beautiful and dapper can
boost a couples confidence and ensure they
look back on their wedding photographs and
videos with pride.
Certain beauty basics and makeup and hair
strategies can help any bride look spectacular on
her wedding day. The following are some dos
and donts of wedding day beauty preparations.
DO employ the services of a professional
hairstylist and makeup artist. Professionals have
the experience and tools of the trade to help you
to look your best. From contouring to make your
face seem slimmer to enlarging the appearance
of small eyes, some tricks of the trade are best
left to the pros.
DONT forget to schedule a trial run. Make
this appointment several months before the
wedding day so you have ample time to work
with your stylists and experiment with colors
and hair arrangements to fit your personality and
the style of your gown. Take plenty of pictures
and notes so you will remember what needs to
be on hand for the wedding day.
DO allot enough time for the wedding day
beauty appointment. If you will be going to a
salon, block out two or more slots instead of
one. This way the stylist does not overbook and
will not feel rushed. Many brides opt to have
stylists come to their homes. There may be an
extra charge for this service, but it may be well
worth the cost.
DONT make any drastic changes to your
appearance right before the wedding. This
includes changing your hair color or texture,
extreme tanning, using colored contact lenses, or
chopping off all of your hair. Its better to wait
until after the wedding to change your style.
DO bring a veil, headpiece, hair extensions,
and any other accessories to your hair consult.
This enables the stylist to practice working with
these items.
DONT tweeze or wax brows too close to the
start of the ceremony. Redness and swelling are
common side effects of tweezing and waxing,
and they can be difficult to mask with makeup.
Instead, take care of hair removal a day or two
prior to the wedding.
DO exfoliate your skin prior to the wedding.
This doesnt necessarily mean you should
endure a harsh fruit acid peel or another
procedure. You can exfoliate with a gentle
washing of your skin with a nubby washcloth
to remove any dryness and errant flakes.
Moisturize well to ensure a smooth palette for
makeup application.
DONT wash or condition hair the day of
the wedding. Intricate styles tend to stay better
when hair has a little grip. Dirty hair is easier
to work with than shiny, freshly washed locks.
If you must wash, remember to thoroughly dry
your hair before going to your appointment.
DO wear a little extra makeup than you are
accustomed to wearing because it will show up
better in photos. However, do not wear so much
that you look clownish. A makeup artist can help
you achieve the right balance.
DONT have bridesmaids wear makeup that
is bolder than yours, especially red lips. No one
should upstage the bride.
DO experiment with any products you
havent used before to test for allergic reactions
and see how well they wear.

DONT wear too much under-eye concealer or one that is too light of a
shade. This can draw more attention to problem areas than remedy them.
DO bring a pain relief medication in case a tight hairstyle or headpiece
causes a headache.
DONT forget that men need a little help as well. Exfoliation and
moisturization can help dry skin. Guys should use a new razor and plenty

a memorable wedding entrance
Once wedding vows and rings have been
exchanged, many couples join their friends and
family to celebrate with a wedding reception.
Many brides and grooms eagerly await the
moment when they can make their grand
entrance to the reception, and over the years it
has become customary for couples to make a bit
of a splash when making their first appearance
as husband and wife. Some enter with a special
song. Others prefer something a bit more
theatrical. Explore these ideas for memorable
wedding reception entrances.
Catch guests by surprise. Wedding guests
will probably expect the wedding party to
enter through a certain door and the bride and
groom to follow afterward. Unpredictable
entrances also include unexpected song choices
or dramatic lighting to immediately draw
everyones attention.
Stick to one or two songs. Some couples
think it might be fun to have each member of
the wedding party enter with a different song.
Not only will this take a lot of coordination
on the part of the deejay, but it can make the
entrance choppy as well. Introductions may
go more smoothly if couples have the entire
wedding party enter to a particular song that
revs up the crowd and gets them excited for the
grand entrance. The entrance typically segues

Go with peoples strengths. A couple may

The average wedding tends to be one of the most costly ventures in a

couples life together. Many couples seek ways to cut costs, and negotiating
with prospective vendors is one way to do just that.
Too often couples overlook haggling for better prices because they may be
intimidated by the process or simply want to plan the most memorable day
regardless of cost.
Many vendors build some wiggle room into their prices, and the key for
cost-conscious couples is to find the right strategy to unlock that lower price.
Explore your options. Weddings are big business for vendors, and the
competition is stiff. Visit a variety of vendors and compare their services and
prices prior to making any decisions. This will give you an accurate range
of costs and information for future negotiations. Vendors may be willing
to match competitors prices, so knowing what the photographer down the
street charges can provide you with some negotiating leverage.
Dress modestly for meetings. Its tempting to want to dress to impress,
but very often wedding vendors judge potential clients by their appearances.
If you walk in with a designer handbag and driving the latest model luxury
vehicle, a vendor may get the impression you have extra money to spend.
While you do not have to play the pauper, dress modestly so your appearance
doesnt hurt you at the negotiating table.
Never take the first offer. A good business person will tell you there
always is room for negotiation. Avoid the loaded question of What can you
spend on this? by the vendor. Instead, let them bring up a price first, and
realize that this first quote can almost always be negotiated down. Inform
the vendor that you would really like to work with them but he or she needs
to lower the price. See if they can offer a different package or provide a
discount.
Negotiate the big-ticket items first. Discounts on big-ticket items, such
as the reception venue, will save you the most money. For example, you will
save more by getting 20 percent off at the catering hall than if you save 20
percent on your wedding gown. Once you free up extra money, you may find
you dont have to negotiate as hard with smaller vendors.
Walk away if need be. Always have a Plan B in place. This way if you
tell a vendor that their price is too expensive and you have to pass, you really
have a fall-back option. Some vendors will sweeten the deal, but others will
actually let you walk out the door. And remember, youre more likely to get
a better price by being amenable and well-mannered than making threats or
arguing.
Some deals arent actual discounts. A vendor may be able to work with
you by offering additional services in lieu of actually taking money off of
the price tag. Extra photo prints, a dessert bar and an extra hour of time in
the limousine may seem like great deals, but thats only the case if you truly
need these bonuses. Even if its a great deal, youre still spending more than
you had hoped.
Wedding prices can be overwhelming. However, negotiating for lower
prices is always an option for cost-conscious couples.
