It may express curiosity and interest, but it can also indicate
irritation. It doesnt change the

subject of the question.

Kultur
Like every language, German is constantly changing, due in part to contact with
other languages and cultures. Lehnwrter (loan words) entering a language usually
reflect a particular area of influence from another culture. For example, words
borrowed from English often relate to advertising, business, fashion, fast food, and
pop culture. They include nouns like dasMarketing, dasMeeting, derBlazer,
derSoftdrink, and derDJ; adjectives like cool, hip, and fit; and verbs like
lunchen and stylen.
German has also adopted many English words for technology. Verbs like
downloaden, chatten, and googeln have become a regular part of the language,
and nouns like derComputer, dieHomepage, and dieE-Mail are far more
common than their German equivalents dieDatenverarbeitungsanlage, die
Einstiegsseite, and dieelektronischePost.
Although these borrowed words take on German grammatical forms like
gender or verb endings (das Meeting, wirlunchen), they usually have the same
meaning as in English. However, some English words used in German have a
rather unexpected meaning for speakers of English. Find the English words in
the photos on this page. Which words are used in a different way from what you
might expect?

use a verb with gern. To say that you dont like to do something, you can use a
verb with nichtgern.
Alexander kocht gern.
Helga spielt gern Klavier.
Nina geht gern tanzen.
Robert lernt nichtgern.

the Black Forest and the cuckoo clock
DerSchwarzwald, named for its dense forests, is a wooded, mountainous
region in southwestern Germany, famous for its natural beauty, picture-book
villages, and handcrafted clocks, particularly the Kuckucksuhr.
The clockmaking craft in the region was begun in the mid-seventeenth
century by farmers who needed to supplement their meager income.
Clockmaking was also a popular trade in the harsh, mountainous regions of
Austria and Switzerland, but it was the clockmakers of the Black Forest who
were the most successful in selling their clocks around the world. In Black
Forest resorts like Triberg and Titisee, tens of thousands of cuckoo clocks
are purchased annually by tourists from all over the world.
Nearly the entire Black Forest an area about the size of
the state of Connecticut is a protected nature park.

Sprachnotiz
In colloquial German, the five minutes before and after the half hour are
often spoken as follows:
Es ist fnf vor halb zwei.
You just learned that adverbs like nachmittags and abends refer to parts of the day.
You can also use them to express that something happens repeatedly or regularly.
Ich habe nachmittags Vorlesungen
und abends gehe ich oft in die
Bibliothek.
You can use this same approach with days of the week or parts of days of the
week, e.g., freitags (on Fridays), sonntagabends (on Sunday evenings).
Ich habe montags viel zu tun.
Ich gehe samstagnachmittags
gern ins Kino.

Nestled in the Alpen between Austria and Switzerland lies the principality of Liechtenstein (capital:

the German-speaking countries.
Liechtenstein has its own government and constitution, but since 1920 it has been using Swiss currency.
The 35,000 inhabitants of Liechtenstein enjoy a high
standard of living, and taxes are so low that many foreign
companies are located there. In fact, there are more companies registered in Liechtenstein than there are inhabitants.
Liechtenstein is well known to anyone who collects

2-32 to 2-33
In English the spelling of a word does not always indicate how it is pronounced
(e.g., plough, through, thorough, enough). English pronunciation is also a poor
indicator of spelling (e.g., be, see, believe, receive). In German, spelling and
pronunciation are much more consistent. Once you have mastered a few basic
principles, you should have no trouble pronouncing and spelling new words.
In a stressed syllable, each of these five vowels is either long or short. Listen
carefully to the pronunciation of the following words and sentences and at the
same time note the spelling. You will see that certain letter combinations indicate
quite reliably whether a vowel in a stressed syllable is long or short.
Always long:
A doubled vowel: Haar,Tee,Boot.
A vowel followed by an h: Jahr, geht,Sohn, Uhr.
An i followed by an e: Bier,sieben.
A vowel followed by one consonant plus another vowel: Nase, wenig,
Kino,Monat,Minute.
A vowel followed by an : gro,Strae,Fuball.
Always short
A vowel followed by a doubled consonant: Wasser,Wetter,Lippe,
Sommer,Suppe.
80 / achtzig
M02_GONG2789_SE_06_C02.indd 80
Usually short:
A vowel followed by two or more consonants: Land,Mensa,
trinken,Tochter,Stunde.
