FAMILY
FOCUS
Introducing New Foods!
Children arent known for their eagerness
to try new foods. Oftentimes, you will have
to get creative to encourage them to try
something new.
Make a fun shopping trip out of it. Bring
your children to the store with you to shop
for new foods.
Let your children help you cook. Children
love to be in the kitchen and including them
may encourage them to try other new foods.
Offer new foods at the beginning of a meal,
when your child is the hungriest.
Think small portions at first. Large amounts
of a new food might
overwhelm them.
We have all heard at one time or another that we should start our day with a
nutritious breakfast. Eating breakfast helps us perform better and provides
energy to get through the morning. Here are a few ideas that are quick,
easy and healthy. They just might work in those precious few minutes
between waking up and opening the door to welcome the first child of the
day!
Oatmeal: Oatmeal can be a healthy, filling breakfast. It is high in fiber and
you can eat it alone or add nuts or fresh fruit for some variety each morning.
Yogurt: Yogurt is another fast choice that gives you calcium (our aging
bones need) and protein. Just like with oatmeal, you can add fresh fruit to
mix it up a bit.
Fruit: Fresh fruits are always a fast on the go food option that you can fit
into any busy schedule. In addition, many fruits provide a healthy dose of
vitamin C (oranges) or potassium (bananas).
Eating a healthy breakfast is a good start to each day, but we must not
forget to make all our meals as nutritious as possible.
Dont know where to start? ChooseMyPlate.gov provides many resources
for meal planning, recipes, and programs to help make healthy choices. In
addition, this site contains a variety of activities that you can do with the
children in your care!
Always remember that when starting any healthy habit to consult with your
physician. With their blessing you can then March on to implement a well
balanced plan for a healthier YOU!
