The story of Apollo Hospitals draws a striking

The private sector in India accounts for
more than 80% of total health care spending.
The main factors contributing to this
accelerated growth are increase in population
and income levels, the change in demographics
and the shift in illness profiles from chronic
to lifestyle diseases. Indian health delivery,
therefore, will only have to get more robust; it
will simply have to reinvent itself and prepare to
face these new challenges.

access has been a key focus area for Dr. Prathap
C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals. The
Group has taken several pioneering steps in this
regard. Last year, Apollo Hospitals launched the
first Apollo Reach Hospital in Karimnagar,
Andhra Pradesh and plans to open 25 more
such facilities over the next two years. Even as
work continues on developing the infrastructure

telemedicine model by having strategic tie-ups
and pressing into service emerging technologies.
Apollo Hospitals has pushed the boundaries
in Indian healthcare. It was the first cardiac team
in India to perform beating heart surgeries,
bloodless surgeries and minimally invasive

History
Padma Bhushan Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, FounderChairman of the Apollo Hospitals Group has
shaped and nurtured the ethos of Apollo
Hospitals with his vision and inspiring leadership.
Recognised as the architect of Indias healthcare
revolution, Dr. Reddy has made Apollo Hospitals
a centre for medical excellence, innovation and
a catalyst of positive change.
Dr. Reddy migrated back from the US in the
mid-1970s and set up his cardiology practice in
India. Moved by the death of a patient who
could not afford to travel to the US for
treatment, Dr. Reddy embarked on a mission to
work towards improving the healthcare

He built Apollo Hospitals in 1983 with a
team of 25 members. Today, Apollo

Apollo introduced a paradigm shift in healthcare
in India by making available multi-speciality 360degree medical care. This meant that patients
could get the entire range of services under one
roof: preventive care, emergency aid, diagnostics,
consultation, treatment and rehabilitation.
Apollos pursuit of excellence has resulted in
the development of revolutionary centres of
distinction across medical disciplines. These have
already touched and cured millions of patients.
Apollos Institute for Cardiology and
Cardiothoracic surgery is one of the largest
such groups in the world.
Similarly constituted, the Institute of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialises in
the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of
diseases of the digestive tract and liver. The

out kidney and cancer treatments.

Procedures and treatment apart, Apollo
Hospitals has an array of sophisticated
technologies some introduced for the first
time in India. In 2008, for instance, Apollo
Hospitals installed the countrys first 320-slice
CT scanner and the first CyberKnife at the
Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital in Chennai.
Apollo Childrens Hospital in Chennai is the

first standalone Quaternary-Care Paediatric

Hospital in the Apollo Hospitals Group and
promises to re-define paediatric care in the

Recent Developments
Apollo Hospitals is constantly adding
to its competency and upgrading its
already existing infrastructure. A fine
example of this is the Apollo Childrens
Hospital that was inaugurated in July
2009. The hospital is a multi-speciality
facility dedicated to children.
Apollo Hospitals with nearly 1000
pharmacies in the country is the
stakeholder of the largest pharmacy chain
in India. Apollo Hospitals is in the process
of implementing new projects at
Bhubaneswar, Navi Mumbai, Thane and
Visakhapatnam.
In one of the first-of-its-kind initiatives in
India, Apollo entered into a joint venture with
British American Hospitals Enterprise Limited
and commissioned the Apollo Bramwell
Hospitals in Mauritius. Another joint venture has
been formed with Lavasa Corporation Limited

to establish a healthcare city at Lavasa, a hill

station under development near Pune.
Apollo Hospitals is progressing rapidly on its
