The story of Apollo Hospitals draws a striking

parallel with the overall story of the Indian
healthcare industry. When Apollo began its
quest to bring world-class facilities to the
country, India had reached an inflection point,
which would redefine its healthcare model
forever. Analysts of Indian healthcare, in fact,
have repeatedly pointed to the strong
correlation between the two.
Commencing in the early 1980s Apollo
Hospitals has, today, grown to be the largest
healthcare provider in Asia with 46 hospitals
offering 8000 beds. The story of healthcare
delivery in India has been no less spectacular

in this period. In terms of both revenue and

employment it has become one of the largest
contributors to the Indian economy.
During the 1990s the Indian healthcare
segment grew at a compounded annual growth
rate (CAGR) of 16% thus doubling every five
years. As at 2007, it had acquired a net value of
more than US$ 34 billion (Rs. 163,200 crore)
(Source: PricewaterhouseCoopers) or
approximately 6% of Indias gross domestic
product. By 2012, this figure is projected to
grow to nearly US$ 40 billion (Rs. 192,000
crore) (Source: PricewaterhouseCoopers) and
quadruple by 2017 (Source: KPMG).
The private sector in India accounts for
more than 80% of total health care spending.
The main factors contributing to this
accelerated growth are increase in population
and income levels, the change in demographics
and the shift in illness profiles from chronic
to lifestyle diseases. Indian health delivery,
therefore, will only have to get more robust; it
will simply have to reinvent itself and prepare to
face these new challenges.

Achievements
The Apollo Hospitals Group, very clearly one of
the beacons in Indian healthcare, has already
placed all its skill, expertise and vision to forge a
blueprint that will help meet the countrys
evolving needs. The focus on bringing the very
best in global healthcare continues unabated.
2008 saw the installation of the first 320 Slice
CT Scanner in India the worlds most
advanced technology in diagnostic imaging, as
well as Indias first CyberKnife at Apollo

Removing the challenges of geographical
access has been a key focus area for Dr. Prathap
C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals. The
Group has taken several pioneering steps in this
regard. Last year, Apollo Hospitals launched the
first Apollo Reach Hospital in Karimnagar,
Andhra Pradesh and plans to open 25 more
such facilities over the next two years. Even as
work continues on developing the infrastructure
for this, Apollo Hospitals is strengthening its
telemedicine model by having strategic tie-ups
and pressing into service emerging technologies.
Apollo Hospitals has pushed the boundaries
in Indian healthcare. It was the first cardiac team
in India to perform beating heart surgeries,
bloodless surgeries and minimally invasive
surgeries. Apollo has over twelve global multicentric cardiovascular clinical trial research
studies underway.
In a long series of firsts, Apollo Hospitals
became the first hospital in India to perform
liver-, multi-organ- and cord-blood transplants,
as well as orthopaedic procedures like hip and
knee replacements and Birmingham hip
resurfacing.
One of Apollo Hospitals greatest
contributions is in the field of clinical excellence.
If, today, India boasts of outcomes comparable
to the best in the world, much
credit will need to be
placed at the doorsteps of
this great institution.
An ISO certified
institution, Apollo
Hospitals,
Chennai
became the
first hospital
in Asia to
receive
the JCI
international
accreditation.

The JCI accreditation is seen as the gold

standard for excellence in healthcare the world
over. Seven hospitals from the Apollo Hospitals
Group have been its proud recipients. Apollo
Speciality Hospitals, Madurai became the first
hospital in the Apollo Group to be awarded
Indias most prestigious accreditation the
National Accreditation Board for Hospitals &
Healthcare (NABH).

History
Padma Bhushan Dr. Prathap C. Reddy, FounderChairman of the Apollo Hospitals Group has
shaped and nurtured the ethos of Apollo
Hospitals with his vision and inspiring leadership.
Recognised as the architect of Indias healthcare
revolution, Dr. Reddy has made Apollo Hospitals
a centre for medical excellence, innovation and
a catalyst of positive change.
Dr. Reddy migrated back from the US in the
mid-1970s and set up his cardiology practice in
India. Moved by the death of a patient who
could not afford to travel to the US for
treatment, Dr. Reddy embarked on a mission to
work towards improving the healthcare
infrastructure in India.
He built Apollo Hospitals in 1983 with a
team of 25 members. Today, Apollo
Hospitals is Asias largest

healthcare provider, with team strength of

over 60,000.

Product
Apollo introduced a paradigm shift in healthcare
in India by making available multi-speciality 360degree medical care. This meant that patients
could get the entire range of services under one
roof: preventive care, emergency aid, diagnostics,
consultation, treatment and rehabilitation.
Apollos pursuit of excellence has resulted in
the development of revolutionary centres of
distinction across medical disciplines. These have
already touched and cured millions of patients.
Apollos Institute for Cardiology and
Cardiothoracic surgery is one of the largest
such groups in the world.
Similarly constituted, the Institute of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology specialises in
the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of
diseases of the digestive tract and liver. The

Institutes of Nephrology and Oncology carry

out kidney and cancer treatments.
Advanced care for treatment of brain
tumours, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, movement
disorders, vestibular diseases, strokes and
headaches is available at its Institute for
Neurosciences.
Procedures and treatment apart, Apollo
Hospitals has an array of sophisticated
technologies some introduced for the first
time in India. In 2008, for instance, Apollo
Hospitals installed the countrys first 320-slice
CT scanner and the first CyberKnife at the
Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital in Chennai.
Apollo Childrens Hospital in Chennai is the

first standalone Quaternary-Care Paediatric

Hospital in the Apollo Hospitals Group and
promises to re-define paediatric care in the
region.
Apollo DKV Insurance is yet another of the
Groups landmark initiatives designed to provide
greater access to quality healthcare, to a greater
number of people.

Recent Developments
Apollo Hospitals is constantly adding
to its competency and upgrading its
already existing infrastructure. A fine
example of this is the Apollo Childrens
Hospital that was inaugurated in July
2009. The hospital is a multi-speciality
facility dedicated to children.
Apollo Hospitals with nearly 1000
pharmacies in the country is the
stakeholder of the largest pharmacy chain
in India. Apollo Hospitals is in the process
of implementing new projects at
Bhubaneswar, Navi Mumbai, Thane and
Visakhapatnam.
In one of the first-of-its-kind initiatives in
India, Apollo entered into a joint venture with
British American Hospitals Enterprise Limited
and commissioned the Apollo Bramwell
Hospitals in Mauritius. Another joint venture has
been formed with Lavasa Corporation Limited

to establish a healthcare city at Lavasa, a hill

station under development near Pune.
Apollo Hospitals is progressing rapidly on its
plans for bringing contemporary healthcare
facilities to Africa as well.
However, one of its most ambitious projects
is the Health Hiway. This Apollo initiative is
creating a national health data network
accessible on the internet. It will link 200,000
doctors and dramatically facilitate effective
collaboration amongst them.

Promotion
The Apollo Hospitals Group lays a great deal of
importance on education and research.
Towards this end,
it runs eleven schools
and colleges of nursing,
two institutions for
hospital administration
and a college of
physiotherapy.
Diplomate National
Board (DNB) courses
are conducted at
various Apollo hospitals
in over twenty
specialities. The Group
has been running
programmes to train
paramedical personnel
including emergency
medical technicians and
laboratory technicians.
Apollo Hospitals
Educational and
Research Foundation
(AHERF) receives
online support for its
programme from
Medvarsity Online Limited. The Research
Division of AHERF undertakes diverse projects
in areas covering basic research, epidemiological
research, clinical trials and clinical research.

Brand Values
Over the years, the institution has consistently
risen above the exceptional. It has been a

India. If medical tourism is a reality today, it
is in no small measure attributable to the
high standards Apollo has set and the
fine name and recognition it has achieved
internationally.
Apollos employees are enjoined to
follow rigorously the Florence
Nightingale approach of tender loving
care. All efforts are made to ensure
that every patient who comes into
Apollo is put instantly at ease. Its not
just the quality of the diagnosis, the
equipment, the medical staff or the
exceptional success rates at Apollo
that have made it the leading health
care provider in the region; it is largely
the emotional bond that the hospital
creates with the patient that makes Apollo
so special.
