Question 1
This question is based on an experiment conducted by NASA on a novel source
of energy for a space shuttle.) Above the equator of the Earth, the Earth's
magnetic field runs horizontally in the south- north direction. A space-shuttle
flying from west to east above the equator cuts perpendicularly across the
magnetic field as shown in the diagram below. A small satellite is attached to
the shuttle by a very long thin copper cable. It is proposed to use the e.m.f
generated in the cable as a source of electrical energy for the shuttle
(a) Explain how is there an e.m.f. generated in
the cable
(b)Calculate the magnitude of this e.m.f.
using the following data: Cable length:20 km
Speed of Shuttle and satellite = 7.0 km s-1
Horizontal component of the Earth's
magnetic flux density: 6.0 x 10-5T .
(c) State the direction of the generated e.m.f.

Question 2
(a). Explain briefly what is meant by nuclear fusion.
13
(b). A carbon isotope 6 C is bombarded with a proton to
produce an unknown nuclide, X.
(i)Write a nuclear equation to represent the above
reaction and identify the unknown nuclide, X.
(c) Calculate the energy released during the reaction
13
[mass of 6 C = 13.003355u, mass of 11 H = 1.007825u,
mass of unknown nuclide X = 14.003074u, 1u = 931
MeV]

Question 3
Suppose that the length of the moving rod is l = 0.2m, its speed is v = 0.1 ms-1 ,
the magnetic field-strength is 1.0 T (the field is directed into the page--see
Fig. below, and the resistance of the circuit is 0.020 .
(a)What is the emf generated around the
circuit? What current flows around the
circuit?
(b)What is the magnitude and direction of
the force acting on the moving rod due to
the fact that a current is flowing along it?
(c) What is the rate at which work must be
performed on the rod in order to keep it
moving at constant velocity against this
force?
(d) What is the rate at which electrical
energy is generated?
(e) What is the rate at which energy is
converted into heat due to the resistivity
of the circuit?

Question 4
Suppose that two insulated wires are wound onto a
common cylindrical former of length l = 0.1 m and
cross-sectional area A = 0.05m2 . The number of turns
in the first wire is N1 = 100 , and the number of turns in
the second wire is N2 = 300 .
(a)What is the mutual inductance of the two wires?
(b)If the current flowing in the first wire increases
uniformly from 0 to 10 A in 0.1 s, what emf is
generated in the second wire? Does this emf act to
drive a current in the second wire which circulates in
the same sense as the current in the first wire, or the
opposite sense?

Question 5
(a)An electric current is shown below. If the current flowing
resistor 10 is 2.0 A, the current flowing through resistor 15
is

(b)A 5F capacitor is charged until its potential difference is 12V

before it is disconnected from the supply. The capacitor is
then connected in parallel to an uncharged 10F capacitor.
The common potential difference of the two capacitors is
