Montage
Description:
This is an uplifting montage made by blending three images, and the use of
typography.
Date:
02/15/15
Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn how to use the masking tool and blend images togehter smoothly, and apply
appropriate typography.
Process:
First I cropped the background image (climber) in Adobe Photoshop. I wanted the
focus to be on the person climbing the mountain. The original image didnt have
the top of the mountain, which I had to duplicate a section of the rock to add it to
the top and blend it, making it look part of it. Next I imported the hand of the Lord
into the canvas and used the masking tool to get rid of the unnecessary parts of the
image leaving a soft edge making it blend with the background image. I changed
the contrast, levels, curves, color balance, hue, and sharpness of it to make it stand
out and create a good blending effect. The last step was including a texture in the
background so that it could help with the blending process, and give it a charred
look; for this image I changed the opacity and contrast, along with color balance.
The final process was typography; I tried to make a few words stand out that I think
emphasize the big message. For the type I tried to use contrasting fonts so that it
could become more eye catching for the audience.

Logos
Description
Three different logo designs for the same company.

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.
Process:
I designed these logos in Adobe Illustrator. I downloaded a font for the first logo
design, which already had the bolt in the center; I traced it using the pen tool and
duplicated the bolt and changed its size and color and added a stroke to it and the
text. For the middle logo I simply created a box and using the same bolt from the
previous logo I manipulated it using the direct select tool, making it look better as I
resized it to fit in the box. For the last logo I chose to create a different bolt design
using the pen tool, I added a stroke to it and the text; the rest of the elements are
typography.

Letterhead
Description:
Matching business cards and letterhead.
Date:

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Create a new logo in Adobe Illustrator and design consistent layouts for a busiess
card and letterhead.
Process:
I positioned the logo on the top left corner leaving a 0.5 margin. I also added a
large version of the shutter as a watermark. I reduced the opacity to about 3% .
I duplicated the shape that forms the shutter and stretched it to the width of the
document and positioned it at the bottom. I used this as a text box outline and
incorporated my contact information. I wanted to follow the rule of repetition,
so I duplicated that same shape and positioned it at the top pointing the opposite
direction, and created white space around the logo so it would stand out.

Business Card

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign & Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image and design conisstent
layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Process:
First I created the logo in Adobe Illustrator; for the most part I used the pen tool
and the shapes tool to create the shutter. I downloaded a font from dafont.com
and chose another from Illustrator to finish it up. After the completion of the logo,
I transferred it over to a new Adobe InDesign file and created my business card. I
designed the back side of it first by centering and resizing the logo. For the front
part of the business card I positioned the logo on the left side and on the right side
I created a text box where I included all the contact information. I made sure I left a
0.5 margin on every edge. Lastly I decided to add some circles to the background,
to match the shape of the logo (circular). I reduced the opacity of each so it wont
take attention from the text and the logo which happen to be the focus point.

Brochure
Description:
A two sided offset folding brochure.

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop
Objectives:
Set up and align a two sided, offset brochure. Learn how to use paragraph styles in
InDesign and wrap text around an image.
Process:
I created this offset brochure on Adobe InDesign. First I created a 8.5 x 11 layout. I
used rulers to mark where the fold would be and the divided sections. I attempted
to make this brochure look patriotic; so, I thought it would be a good idea to use
the American flag as a background for the inside and the outside. I imported my
logo I created in Adobe Illustrator and placed it at the front. The images I got from
the internet I tried to make them all have some relativity to what a shooting range
truly is. For the bullet belt image and the shooting target I had to do some editing
in Adobe Photoshop; I had to get rid of the background of these two images.
After placing the images in their perspective places, I downloaded a font from
dafont.com and used it for the shooting ranges name at the back, and I also used
that same font for my logo. Also, the image of the men shooting at the range I
feathered the edges a little bit to make it blend a little more with the background,
and added a shadow around it. Finally, after placing the text, I created a style for the
headings and the rest of the body copy.

Flier
Description:
This black and white flier exhibits a call to action for all graduates out there
interested in attending a graduate leadership conference.
Date:

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Use appropriate typography and incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic
flier layout.
Process:
I first made four sketches that helped me create a layout; the logo, image and
content for this flier were provided. After gathering all my ideas I began to put it
all together in Adobe InDesign. One of my goals was to make the Logo stand out,
but not make it a title. I put some text on the logos letter O to make it more eye
catching to the audience. Also, I used two small dots at the very top for repetition. I
made use of two font types to create contrast and a good focal point. The amount
of white space helped create a good balance throughout the design and appealing
for the eye.

Event Ad
Description:
A color full-bleed event ad to promote a Festival of Media Arts using Microsoft
Word and a scanner.
Date:

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word & Scanner
Objectives:
Learn how to scan and import an image in high quality. Create a full bleed design
and edit images in Word.
Process:
I scanned the girls image and corrected the image by adding a blur to it and a little
bit of contrast. I figured that the effects applied to the image would diminish the
chances of taking away focus from the title and the body copy. I downloaded the
titles font and used another font from Word to create some contrast in weights.

Web Page
Description:
A website designed to illustrate a personally designed logo
Date:

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Notepad++
Objectives:
Size and optimize a logo as a .png for a web page. Design a web page using HTML
to display logo and content and attach a CSS style sheet.
Process:
I created this website using Notepad ++. First I created an HTML document and
wrote all the necessary code and content that would display on the website. After
that was done, I created a CSS style sheet, where I attempted to use the same
colors that I used on my logo so that there could be some repetition in the design.
I also made the four corners of the boarder around my body text round, which I
had do some research to accomplish that. Also, I coded my logo to the html file and
centered it. I also declared some back up fonts, just in case the browser doesnt
have the font I want it to display.

Description:
A personally taken and edited Photograph.
Date:

Course/ Instructor:
COMM 130 - Section 4
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn photography skills and adjust brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation levels.
Process:
These pictures were taken at the gardens located on campus of BYU-I. For this
project I simply tried to follow the rule of thirds on every photograph. That
particular day was foggy and it was a little challenging to take a good photo; on
Adobe Photoshop I could fix this problem by adjusting the levels, curves, color
balance, the brightness and contrast of the image; with these changes I got to see a
great improvement on quality, and the colors really popped out creating a pleasant
contrast.
