a)

What is the BVP that is being solved in the program segment above.

Ans:

ut ( x ,t ) u xx ( x ,t ) 0 x 1,

u( 0, t ) 0

u( 1, t ) 0

t 0

u( x ,0 ) sin 3x 2 sin 5x

0 x 1

b) Describe in words what the model represent.

Ans:
This is a mathematical model of the heat conduction in a one-dimensional
uniform rod of length 1cm with no internal heat source, thermal diffusivity
1cm2/sec.,
perfect
lateral
insulation
and
initial
conditions
u( x ,0 ) sin 3x 2 sin 5x 0 x 1 . The left and right boundaries
are in direct contact with a 00 bath.

c) Sketch the model physically.

d) Sketch the solution curves obtained computationally by the command

Ans:

e) Interpret this visual.

Ans:
This figure shows the heat profile along the rod for t>0. Initially the heat at every
point along the rod is governed by the equation sin 3 x 2 sin 5 x . After
0.005 sec the temperature profile still appears sinusoidal but with the amplitude
reduced. After 0.01 sec the temperature further reduces getting closer to 0. After
0.05 sec the temperature along the rod is even closer to 0. After about 0.1 sec the
temperature along the rod is still sinusoidal. After 1 sec the heat stabilizes to 0
temperature. However at all times the ends of the rod are unchanged and remain 0.
