Introduction
r G au ya G t i-g u c c h a
I n t ro d u c t i o n
r Gauya Gti-guccha
r Gauya Gti-guccha was first published on Gaura
Prim, 1957, by r rmad Bhakti Prajna Keava Gosvm
Mahrja. He compiled many different krtanas by Vaiava
authors, from before the time of Mahprabhu to the present
day, and arranged them in order according to language,
subject, and mood. Guccha means a cluster, and these songs
have been clustered in a most beautiful way, like a bouquet of
flowers. This forms the basis of this current English edition.
Therefore, r Gaudiya Gti-guccha, an anthology1 of
Gauya Vaiava songs, is a treasure-house of prayers,
cherished and sung by one who is a sdhaka (practitioner of
bhakti) as well as by one who is a siddha (perfected devotee).
1 The word anthology can be traced to its Greek root, meaning a
gathering of flowers.
xxiii
r G au ya G t i-g u c c h a
Sequence
Our cryas emphasize the necessity of praying to ones
gurudeva, the Vaiavas, and so forth, before commencing
any act or supplication. For this reason, the magalcaraa is
recited before krtana begins. In traditional Gauya krtana,
songs are first sung to r guru, then the Vaiavas, r r
Gaura-Niti, about the process of surrender (aragati), and
then to r r Rdh-Ka. The krtana session ends with the
singing of the mah-mantra.

Song Titles
According to Bengali Gauya tradition, a song is known
by its introductory words; it has no separate title. We have
therefore entitled the songs herein according to their
initial few words. Exceptions are the rat songs, and all the
stotrams.
Website
We are in the process of translating more krtanas,
gathering bona fide explanations of krtanas, writing
explanations on how to sing them, and recording them being
sung. We will gradually be posting all this on our website,
www.gaudiyakirtan.com.
The Bengali and Hindi editions of r Gauya Gti-guccha
have beautiful introductions by rla Bhakti Prajana Keava
Gosvm Mahrja, rla Bhaktivednta Vmana Gosvm
Mahrja, and rla Bhaktivednta Nrya Gosvm Mahrja.
They are being translated into English and will be posted on our
website, along with many quotes from our guru-varga.

xxv
r G au ya G t i-g u c c h a
Because the songs in this book come from the pure hearts
of exalted Vaiavas, it is not really possible to translate
them into a language of this world. Nonetheless, a sincere
person may still receive their direct import by the mercy of r
guru and the authors, who transcend all worldly limitations.
Therefore, in accordance with the practice of his guruvarga, our beloved gurudeva, nitya-ll-pravia r rmad
Bhaktivednta Nryaa Gosvm Mahrja, asked that these
songs be translated into every language of the world. We
humbly submit this English translation of r Gauya Gtiguccha into his lotus hands and beg forgiveness from him and
our esteemed readers for any error it may contain.

How to Perform
K-rtana
Words From Our cryas
As we sing these verses, we should meditate on our
guru-varga and consider, It is you who are actually
submitting these prayers; it is you who are singing them.
Without your mercy I will never be qualified to make
such prayers. It is only by their mercy that we can follow
in their footsteps and pray like this, and thus gradually
attain loving service to the Divine Couple in Vraja.
r rmad Bhaktivednta Nyraa Gosvm Mahrja,
r Dmodaraakam, Verse Five
Ka-krtana is not for earning livelihood. Kakrtana is not meant for entertaining the public for
demonstration of arts. It is dynamic service to the Lord.
We do not therefore mind so much about the artistic
presentation of ka-krtana, but we want to see how
much a devotee is satisfying the Supreme will.
r rmad Bhaktivednta Svm Mahrja,
letter to Yadu ds, December 12, 1967

Nasals
All the vowels in Bengali and Hindi, except for , can be nasalized.
This is done by diverting some of the breath to the nose. You
can easily make the sound by pinching your nose! In our
transliteration, this is represented with a tilde (~) above the letter
(eg. kdiya).

notes on our system of transliteration, please visit:
