The card reminds me of a famous nurse. Her name was Florence
Nightingale. She was British. Nowadays, a lot of prizes for nurses are
named after her. I got to know about her when I was reading a book about
famous and admirable people in the word. She is remembered throughout
the world for her heroic, almost superhuman labors during the War. She
dealt with hospitals, the health of the British soldiers as well as the health of
the working people. The school of Nursing stands supreme among her
magnificent achievements. We now know that the profound reforms needed
in hospitals of all kinds, and in every phase of our common lives with its
everyday human needs, are dependent upon her. Almost all modern
nursing systems and techniques we know today can be traced back to her.
She took 38 women to Turkey to nurse wounded and sick British soldiers in
the war. This was the first time the government had allowed women to do
this. With her patience and loving heart, many soldiers were saved, but she
21

suffered from some psychological disease for the rest of her life. She
became not only the first modern war nurse and nurse commander but its
first documented psychological casualty. Even when she was old, she was
working hard in the hospital. I was deeply impressed by her when I was
reading her biography. She not only encouraged me to devote to my work
but also inspired me to make some innovations to my work.

mind quickly. Others have left deep impressions on me, one of whom is a
person of great importance to me. He is my neighbor named Wang Gang. I
have known him since I moved to the building. He is a man in his mid-40s
with a pair of glasses. He looks, as he is, quite intellectual. We have been
friends for many years. He is the manger of a company. Although he is quite
busy, he doesnt hesitate to give me help whenever I need it. He is such a
kind, supportive and optimistic person. He influenced the development of my
character. I still remember when I was in junior high school I once failed a
math exam. I felt so unhappy. Wang Gang came to me and said, Cheer up,
23

girl. Though you failed in this exam, I am sure you will pass the next one since
I know that you are always a diligent girl. You should have confidence in
yourself.
From that moment on, I was determined not to make him feel
disappointed with my efforts. I studied harder. And finally I achieved an ideal
score in math. We share a lot of common interests too, which means that I
can always talk with him about many things. I really respect him.

Reference Answer
I often visit a second hand bookshop located in the street not far from the
main center. From the outside it is a very ordinary shop. At first I did not
realize it was a bookshop. It is not a big shop. In fact everything is very
crowed inside. There is a table in the centre of the room filled with books and
the shelves around the walls are lined with books. While the books are
25

organized into sections and there are books written in Chinese, English and
other languages, it is the type of shop where you have to search for books.
There is not much room for people to move between the table and the
bookshelves. I usually have to squeeze close to the table or shelves to let
other people move past me while Im searching for a book. I actually dont
look very closely at people who came to visit this shop as I am too busy
looking for books. Sometimes I see foreigners in this shop, but not as often as
I do in the foreign language bookshops.I like going to this bookshop because I
can buy books there more cheaply than I can at other bookshops. I also enjoy
searching for the books and am often surprised and very pleased with what I
find. I dont find a book to buy on every visit there, but I keep going back to the
shop because I hope to find another unexpected book.

importance of English and they asked me to study English when I was 5
years old. At that time, I did not speak Chinese very well, and I did not
understand why my parents asked me to learn it, but I just followed their
instructions because I wanted to make them happy.
Later when I went to school, my English was the top one in my class and the
teacher always asked me to tell English stories to my classmates. My
vanity was motivated and my interest was aroused. I spent more time
reading and writing in English. Later my father took me to other countries, I
realized that English was useful for communication in other countries. And I

The only sport that I ever really, really enjoyed was football, football in the
sense of soccer. The Americans call it soccer; the English call it football. Its
the only sport that I played when I was younger, and its the only sport that I
continued watching until now. Of course, now I dont practice it anymore.
On very rare occasions, I go to the stadium to see the games live.
What makes the sport interesting? Perhaps it is the fact that its so popular
all over the world . Everybody knows how to play soccerit takes twenty
two people divided into two teams.
The object is to kick the ball, from one player to the other, until eventually
one of the players kicks the ball into the goal which means the team has
scored one point. That is the general aspect of the game. There are more
detailed rules that have to do with when the ball goes out of the field, what
side of the field that ball goes out, and things of that sort. Of course, that
sport is very well known and has lots of fans all over the world, as
everybody knows, and that is what makes it so interesting to me.

Reference Answer 3.2
I think the best relaxation method is to meditate in a quite place. I can
experience a brilliant moment of my self. In the evening, I will sit quietly and
think about all of my accomplishments (great and small) for the week. I will
congratulate myself. I will think that I am such a wonderful person. I will find
ways to mentally celebrate my successes. In this way, I can boost my selfesteem and find my place of triumph in the midst of the madness. I do it
everyday because daily relaxation reduces frustration, stress and anxiety. It
also offers me at least some opportunities to unwind and escape from the
speed of everyday life.
After doing meditation, I will be refreshed and have more courage to
devote to the second day. Meditation is important because it keeps me far
from the noise of modern cities. I have some moments for myself. I feel
enjoyable whenever I do it.

. (Answer the last question and enrich your answer)
Reference Answer 3.2
If I could one day have a lot of money after winning the football pools, I will
use it to study abroad. Both of my parents were fully aware of the
importance of learning English. They tried to motivate my interest of
studying English when I was very young and decided to send me to study
abroad lately. But you know, studying abroad needs large amounts of
money, which is incredible for my family, because my parents are just
common workers with very small salary. Actually I dont want to use the
money which has been saved little by little by them in the past ten years. So,
if I can luckily get the money, I will use it instead of the money from my
parents to go abroad.
And I also want to buy my parents the best clothes, the best house ,and the
best car,
which can make their life better. Owning a large sum of money is the dream
of everyone
because you can get whatever you want. But remember, dont be a slave to
the money,
and you will definitely enjoy your life better.

3.3 Sample
Compare the city life as opposed to country life.
You should mention:
The convenience of the city
Attractions of the country
Disadvantages of both
and discuss which lifestyle you prefer and why.

Reference Answer 3.3

Well, different people have different ideas about the lifestyle. In
modern societies, most people are in favor of living in big cities, they
believe there will be a better environment to live in and work. There is no
doubt that a big city has many social, educational and cultural facilities
public libraries, universities and colleges, museums, art galleries, clubs,
etc. it also has a wide variety of big stores, restaurants, theatres and other
forms of entertainment.
On the other hand, some people prefer to live in the country if possible.
They really dont understand why so many villagers are flocking to cities
in recent years. They just dont care too much about so-called good
facilities. They say the living conditions in big cities are not good at all.
There is serious air pollution, ceaseless noise, heavy traffic and more
crime. Moreover, since the urban population is expanding, there is an
increasing demand for accommodation. When it comes to the country,
people can be very close to nature. The air is fresh and the sun shines on
you warmly; instead of noise, you hear the singing of birds, which makes
you relaxed and happy. Life in the country is so great, cozy and colorful.
As far as I am concerned, I prefer to have a city life as most people do.
Modern people can easily adapt themselves to city life; noise, traffic,
violence, etc. are hardly noticeable. I believe that country life is dull and
inconvenient. Its quite enough to visit the countryside at weekends.
Actually we modern people are too sophisticated for simple country
pleasures. We need more opportunities to meet a variety of interesting
people; we need more opportunities to get better jobs and fulfil our
ambitions and dreams. And in big cities there is greater range of jobs for us
to choose. I suppose this is one of the most important reasons why so
many people want to in big cities.
