ESCALAS DE ALTURA

HIGH SCALES

por Flix Arranz y Carlos Cmara,

Arquitectos

by Flix Arranz and Carlos Cmara,

Architects

In 1978, Rem Koolhass published Delirious New York, which has become a necessary bibliographic reference for architects, urbanists, sociologists and people related to the production or the study of the congested contemporary city. During some years in Spain, until its translation into Spanish by GG in 2004, this attractive book has gone from one hand
to another, almost furtively, in the same way as the medieval treatises did or the Beatles 45 rpm were secretly imported
in the early sixties.
As it happens with pop music, Delirious New York does not include new or unknown information, but its offer and attractiveness is based in the way that already spread and documented ideas are rounded out and, particulary, in the relation that
the Dutch architect and activist makes between artificiality and conventionality, extraordinariness and ordinariness. Simply, there is not such thing as naturalness: it is included in artificiality and conventionality. It would be much later, in the argumentations of the generic city, when the cycle opened by Delirious would be closed. A cycle that can be summarized
in the claim for strategy over design, the pleasure of discovering and creating hidden wefts instead of classing formal universes, showing off discourses.
The book is defined as a retroactive manifesto about New York, a city apparently without a project but full of high quality
and high-rise architecture. As it is described in Delirious, it is in the union of the creative height and the lineal height where
Koolhaas found in Manhattan a pearl which allows him to identify the archetype of an architecture which is not a paradigmatic construction because of its image or composition logics, but because of the way of understanding the relation between use and location, artificiality and quotidian: the Down Town Athletic Club, from 1939.
The architecture shown in this issue of the a+ international series is based in the experience of Spanish architects when they
have been asked for high-rise architecture and they have proposed high-quality architecture, both in Spain or in the rest of
the world. All the cases included here, either planning, projects or buildings, are recent, after 1992 and, therefore, after the
analysis of Koolhaas above mentioned.
With these facts, the Koolhaas background and the manner and way of the Spanish architects and architecture, the debate provoked in this issue proposes that European, and in particular Spanish, architecture complete, with the professional
action and the material use of theoretical discourse, the ideas where the shrewd and intelligent leader of OMA and AMO
finished them. They also maintain, when designing architecture with great dimensions, the attentive consideration towards
issues like surroundings, structure and inside-outside relation.
The texts, plans and schemas published here are the direct outcome, as the projects, of the architects and their studios,
shown without any intervention. The echo of the page matrix which is common in all the projects and the use of 1:500 and
1:1000 scales as a common reference help, we hope, to the transparent comparison of experiences and manners.
The reader has to inquire in every case the intimate aspiration which is implicit in each of these high-rise architectures and
decide whether these are heirs of the most ancestral traditions or if they are in favour of the informal universes that the contructivist swimmer crosses since 1978*, sorry: 1939; or maybe both of them.
*One last data: 1978 was also the neon year, recalled in the pop shrines in the rhythms and falsettos of Saturday Night Fever,
which was danced that year for the first time with Travolta as an icon. It is, without any doubt, a not casual coincidence.

Planificacin en altura en Amrica:

el Plan General Vitro
High rise planning: Vitro Master Plan

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

In May 2007, Grupo Lar invited us and other architects to make a proposal to develop a Master
Plan for the Vitro plot in Mexico D.F. The plot,
nowadays occupied by the factory of Vitro, is located in the industrial area, an area that is suffering a great transformation into housing use because of its proximity to the suburb of Polanco.
The objective of Grupo Lar is to find a model able
to use the maximum development potential, creating a quality area and an real state product,
separating thus their product from the ones from
their competitors. The regulations for the plot of
75,000m2 are subject to negotiation with the
municipal authorities and, therefore, the urbanism parameters can move from a development
potential of 230,000 m2 to 730,000 (11m2/m2),
from a maximum height between 5 to 40 floors
and from a maximum occupation of 50%.
For these reason, we are proposing to Grupo Lar
a analysis about the urbanism parameters of the
plot, which helps finding the equilibrium between the minimun and the maximum develpoment potential, without renouncing to create a
real state product of better quality than the ones
in the surroundings.
Therefore, we are proposing a system, not a specific planning. A flexible system which makes possible understanding the pros and cons of the different development potentials until it uses the
730,000 m2, which permits negociating the different models with the municipal authorities
without losing its fundamental qualities. It also allows a development done in different phases following the real state requirements. We are looking for the ideal solution, using all the development potential (11m2/m2), creating a quality urban space, for the city and its inhabitants, with
big public spaces, gardens and the environmental
quality of a garden city less dense.
We are proposing a system of stratification. A
basement or pedestal which will give human
scale to the outter streets and will qualify them
with the help of the squares which appear forming the access to the towers and the great public
central piazza. Over the basement of between 3
and 6 storeys there is the private gardens for the
condominium.
This strategy makes possible obtaining a 100% of
free space, a 50% of public space in the street
level and 50% of private garden space in the
roofing of the basement. From this basement the
towers will start, which can be of residential or
office use depending on the real state necessities.
Its height and number will depend on the negociation with the municipal authorities, varying the
development potential between the 230,000 and
the 730,000m2.
Finally, the towers are designed as a typology in
which is possible adapting to a higher or lower
height and the use as housing or offices. These
towers will be protected with a double skin
thought as greenhouse balconies which provide
new quality to the housing.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

Wilhelminapier, in the port of Rotterdam, is an

area where high-density edifications are being
used, according to the theoretical debate in The
Netherlands.
Starting from a study of the volumes, it was decided to build in the southern part of Wilhelminapier
four 150 metres-height towers of to be used as
housing. The towers will be joint in pairs with a
plinth forming two pairs with different characteristics, the ones located at the West are nearer and
the ones in East further, being these ones object of
our design project.
Each tower with its plinth becomes a figure of an
L shape. The mirrored symmetry helps so that it
can be understood as one single project despite
the distance between them.
We have transformed the perimeter of the towers,
initially square, in an uneven and curved shape
which brings to the project many benefits: enlargement of the length of the faade with the
consequent advantages in light and views, apparition of a series of vertical lines which give slenderness to the pieces and, as a effect of the foreshorten, modification of the profile of the towers and its
silhouettes.
This modification of the perimeter allows also to
separate the tower from the plinth, improving
moreover the possibilities of illumination for the
housing. This decision, which has its origin in the
lower floors, defines the final silhouette of the
towers once it grows higher.

Las torres utilizan el sistema estructural

generalizado en los Pases Bajos:
un ncleo central de hormign
y muros paralelos de hormign
The towers are going to be built using the
structural system generalized in the Netherlands: a
central concrete core and parallel concrete wall

Entorno

Surroundings
Wilhelminapier is one or the areas
in the port of Rotterdam which,
once it has lost its use, is in a
process of being incorporated to
the life of the Dutch city. Actually,
over the existant wharf, it has
been planned an urban complex
of a high density, formed with several towers of around 150 meter
height, used as housing in the
Southern part of the wharf and as
offices in the northern part.
Likewise, in the central area former warehouses and port facilities
are being preserved and remodeled to lodge, in the future, complementary uses for the new area,
as cultural facilities, hotels, etc.

Estructura
bajo ambas torres, debiendo hacer

Structure
In comparison with other options
which could be recommended for
a high-rise building, the towers
are going to be built using the
same structural system generalized in housing construction in the
Netherlands. On one hand, a central concrete core, built with sliding formworks, which includes
stairs and lifts; and on the other
hand, parallel concrete 22cm thick
walls, made with a tunnel system,
which solves the structure of the
building as well as the exigent requirements for the divisions between apartments.
Underneath the two towers, there
are two basements where car park
is located. Therefore, we have to
solve the complex problematic of
building under the sea that is,
supporting great vertical forces
which will be only equilibrated by
the towers.

Fachada

Faade
Despite its radical change of use,
the Wilheminapier will continue
having some kind of port aspect:
severe and industrial. It has been
proposed to use reinforced concrete with glass fibre and aluminum
framework for the realization of the
faade of the towers .
The use of curved glass in the corners and in the closing of the balconies over the 100 m height will
be of great importance in the final
image of the tower. On the contrary, the lower floors, used for
lodging shops, will be made with
dark natural Belgian stone.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The project starts with the aim of creating ventilated and illuminated offices all of them with
natural light. Given the good climate of the city
of Guadalajara, the intention was to make air
conditioning not necessary.
The clients asked for singularity, because the
plot is located in a high standing area and the
competition between offices is high.
The number of square metres is fixed, but not
the height of the building. Our decision was to
design a high building developed in three concrete cores where the services and the vertical
circulation elements are located. These cores
are the columns, the only sujection of the building. Some big girders with a variable section are
cantilevered depending on the number of
storeys. The postensioned slabs are fixed to
these girders without any column. This allows
the development of a free car park and offering
office modules without any obstacle. The centre
of the building, that is, the space between the
three cores of vertical circulation, is an open
space. It is illuminated laterally by supressing
randomly three storeys in the office modules.
At the same time, this empty spaces become
windows to the central space, allowing the circulation of air and giving the possibility of not
using air conditioning.
On the other hand, a wooden lattice skin with
sliding doors is used as an awning.

Entorno
ndole.

Surroundings
Located in an newly developed area in
the city, the Cube Tower is thought to
sell offices to companies and to lodge
the headquarters of the real state
group Cub Internacional, consolidating through it its presence in the sector. This area in the city of Guadalajara,
in the municipality of Zapopan, stands
out as an urban development where
uses and facilities are not mixed, because the urban tendency has been of
dividing the sectors and becoming,
thus, the car the main means of transport. In this case, the urban development plan of Puerta de Hierro, where
Carme Pins' work is located, has allowed the construction of some buildings with a mixed area with housing,
shopping, leisure centres and medical
facilities in the surroundings, rising the
density and planning a different dynamic of urban expansion.
Structure
From the first sketches drawn by
Carme Pins until its construction, the
design is defined by its tectonic. The
tower is structure and its activities are
organized through it, joining space
geometry and structural scheme. The
vertical communication and services
cores are support elements that, acting as habitable columns, start from
the foundations till the roof of the
building. On the other hand, the office
modules are laterally embedded to the
concrete screens intermittently
through metallic trusses with postensioned slabs. These modules have
three different surfaces (105, 125 and
175 m2), accommodating different
companies in the building.
Faade
Through the double closure made with
aluminum and wooden framework the
tower can change during night and
day, giving response to the comfort necessities of the inside, adapting to the
climate and solar conditions of
Guadalajara, which has moments of
excessive sun. These closures attenuate
the vibrations of the building too. The
lattice, element used in tropical countries, provides shadow in the interior
and views to the exterior, but, at the
same time, avoids the visual contact of
the working places from the outside,
ensuring the corporative image required to the tower, where companies
of different nature are located.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

Constructing a tower, from my point of view,

means confronting three architectural problems, of which only two have a main interest.
The third has more to do with what is sculptural, with the objectual dimension that the tower
acquires as it becomes a reference piece in the
urban landscape. The structure problem, which
is traditionally an intense object of reflection, is
relegated to a more instrumental level, although in no way is it less important.
Paradoxically the two most interesting questions are the programme and the treatment of
the floor in its encounter with the taller part.
Both can be treated in urban terms and therefore acquire a fruitful significance and a condition to escape from the purely objectual treatment in the battle for who makes the strangest
object, so common in our days.
The specification of the programme proposed,
housing, hotel and recreational and service
space, allows to understand the tower as a continuity of the public space. The treatment of the
ground floors as something complex and rich,
both from a programming as well as a spatial
and structural point of view, abounds in this
idea. These ground floors are the first link of a
series of public uses that will be succeeded in
different levels. The intermediate and the highest level are nothing but public ground floors
that are elevated and merging the high views
and the ground mean.

The crowning point of the tower means
understanding the built piece as a system to
continue the street toward the heights

Entorno

Surroundings
The tower is located in Puerto
Madero-Buenos Aires. The immediate surroundings have no interest. A
group of unsubstantial towers, with
little architectural interest, surround
it. Looking beyond the Plata river is
the only thing that is worthy.

Estructura
La estructura es convencional, con
ncleo central y pilares metlicos
perimetrales.

Structure
The structure is conventional. With a
center chore and perimetral metallic
columns. Between the houses located among the first levels and the hotel, we find a public hall with restaurants as well as other services.
The intermediate floor, devoted to
facilities under the grand access
hall, is configured as a great perimetrical beam that prevents the
structural order of the hotel and
the houses from being the same.
This level is fundamental in the
proposal since they are nothing
more than public ground floors
which are elevated merging the
high views and the floor. This floor
becomes the fundamental link with
the public space.
At the crowning point of the tower,
more restaurants, swimming pools
and other uses come to ensure the
third public link that, beginning in the
ground floor and continued throughout the tower, brings an understanding of the built piece. The tower is not
seen as something separated from
urban reality, nor as an object placed
just like that at the margin of the surroundings, thought only in terms of
distance, but rather as a system to
continue the street toward to what is
public, the heights.
Faade
The whole faade proposed in glass
and replacing the usual aluminum
frames for buttresses which are also made of glass. Only when the
factible hollows appear (in the
houses) is a profile suggested for
framing between the mentioned
glass buttresses. The glass is treated
with a mesh of stainless steel in te
interior which acts as a solar regulator. This way a depth effect is accomplished, of material density that
contrasts with the more "commercial" and insubstantial constructions of the surroundings. The lower floors are probably constructed
in stone, in a very thick stone and
glass from which the glass emerges
from the high construction.

Fachada

diferentes zonas comunitarias.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

Situated in the Maritime City, Dubai, the 200m high

residential tower is conceived as a public sculpture
and a cognitive marker for the new City.
The scheme is inspired by the soft desert landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula and the geometric
Islamic patterns which give identity to the regional
architecture.
The relationship between landscape and geometry
is explored through the undulating vertical form of
the tower and its geometric patterned outer skin.
The soft form of the tower is achieved by projecting
perimeter balconies around a simple and compact
hexagonal plan at the centre of the tower. This idea
provides efficient and repetitive floor plates whilst
giving the tower an identifiable form.
The outer skin of the tower is based on a diagrid
fractal system composed of triangulations. The
glazing system is separated from the outer skin of
the tower for ease of construction. This separation
enables the diagrid to act as solar shading system
for the tower.
Within the overall fractal arrangement, the intensity
of solar shading can be increased on south facing elevations and this provides the tower with a varying
surface texture.
The podium of the tower accommodates parking,
services and shops at ground level with a roof garden above. To activate the urban streetscape, the
lower levels are laid out to provide through-routes
from the neighboring streets with connections to
the upper level roof garden.

We are operating in a commercial environment
where the public realm is limited. Air conditioned
shopping malls become our civic spaces and tower
blocks are vertical neighbourhoodsring
Contexto e iconografa

Context and Iconography

There is a shift in the movement of
global capital away from established Centres of Power in the West
towards rival centres in the East. In
the process we are creating a multi-polar world where New and
Emerging Cities will be become
global powerbrokers.
In the Persian Gulf, the opportunities available however are extraordinary but they will transform the
fate of entire region and in the
process undermine the very societies which have sought to instigate change.
New cities devoid of historical context are now being created in a
formless landscape lacking in recognizable urban markers. The opportunities thrown up by this has given
us an apparent tabula rasa onto
which we can project new urban
morphologies. Despite the promises, the new cities we are offered are
reduced to the level of the theme
park - a Las Vegas on steroids sustained by burgeoning wealth.
In the absence of cognitive markers, there is a desire in the Gulf to
create ever more iconic icons competing for public affection.
We are operating in a highly
charged commercial environment
where the public realm is limited
through cultural and climatic requirements. In this context, air conditioned shopping malls become
our civic spaces and tower blocks
are vertical neighbourhoods.
Structure-Faade
The tower is supported on a steel
frame with composite metal decking for speed of construction. The
structure is organized as four concentric rings of support which radiate around the tower and emanate
from the central lift core and stair
well, the first ring. The second ring
of support is the service ring which
accommodates bathrooms and vertical service ducts. Beyond this we
have a ring of columns placed at
the perimeter of the hexagonal
plan. The outer structural layer is
the skeletal envelope which also
provides solar shading.
The faade and patterned outer
skin of the building work as a system. The glazing is set-in from the
deep plan balconies to provide
shadow to the apartments.

Internazionale, calle Aleardi y plaza Mazzini, y

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The new complex is located in the centre of Lido di Jesolo. It is made up by two buildings
which are formally and functionally integrated:
the Aquileia Tower and business building.
The project is part of the Urban and Environmental Integrated Zoning Programme called
Piruea Aquileia. This programme plans an
elaborated and large zoning project of the
central area located between Internazionale
square, Aleardi street and Mazzini square. It
proposes a transverse system as an alternative
to the traditional longitudinal system, parallel
to the sea like the Bafiel street or the Trentin
street. When one arrives to Internazionale
square, the car must be parked and an avenue covered full of trees starts, with shadow
and sun, providing a recreation space leading
to the sea.
In this urban regeneration proposal, the Aquileia
Tower becomes a symbol of a new identity of
Jesolo as an architectural reference because it
dominates the two main attractions of the landscape: the sea and Venetian Lagoon.
The relation of the Aquileia Tower and public
spaces in the Aleardi Street and Mazzini
square is filtered by the new Aquileia square,
where public places as shops, cafs and
restaurants are located. The square, totally
pedestrian and flat, belongs to the Tower and
the shopping area and it is paved in skidproof
natural stone.

Las terrazas amplias y profundas permiten

tener mltiples ngulos de visin hacia
el panorama marino o lagunar
The wide and large balconies provide multiple
points of view to the sea and the lagoon

Entorno
El complejo est compuesto por dos
partes: un bloque comercial y la torre
residencial.
permiten tener mltiples ngulos
de visin hacia el panorama marino
o lagunar.
Fachada

Surroundings
The complex is formed by two main
parts: the comercial building and the
residential tower.
The business building closes in three
sides the Aquileia square and it is
opened to the Mazzini square,
where there is the entrance to the
restaurant and the solarium. Its irregular shape surrounds the base of the
Tower and it is an unitary background in comparison with the heterogeneous environment.
Every business is showed up to the
new square, whereas in the backstreet, along the green strip, the loading and unloading access, the services and the warehouse are located. A
screen system protects them properly
from the sun.
The structural mesh provides flexibility
to the division of the unities.
Structure
The structure of the business building
is completely made with reinforced
concrete. On the contrary, the Tower
is made with steel and concrete.
The Tower has a simetric poligonal
plan developed in 23 storeys. The first
two floors, where the business and
the entrance are located, are fully
covered with glass to relate in a transparent and light way the Tower with
the ground floor.
The housing part, from the second to
the 23rd floor, foresees an unique typical floorplan with four apartments using two typoligies of flats.
The particularity of the housing
project is the system of the wide
and large balconies, which provide
multiple points of view to the see
and the lagoon.
Faade
The almost transparent faades of the
Tower, made with an alternance of
shadows, are caracterized with a
crossed mesh of sliding panels. These
protect the inside from the sun,
whereas the pane can be seen from
the outside. The panels, fixed and sliding, are made with rectangular aluminum tubes.
The balconies are thought as an intermediate space projecting the apartment to the outside.
The structure of the faade is hanging
from the roof, formed by a system of
crossed sails. Once these are lighted
up, the building becomes an orientation point for the site.

Planificacin en altura en Europa: el

caso de la prolongacin de la
Castellana de Madrid
High rise planning: the case of the
prolongation of Madrids Castellana

Madrid's Paseo de la Castellana has the character of the citys true structuring axis. That is, beyond housing basic functions as communications channel and support for the adjacent built
tissue, it constitutes a vertebrating piece of the
citys morphological skeleton and a key part of
its mental map, adding comprehension or order
to the city as a whole.

The historical construction of the Castellana axis shows that this particular quality has resulted
from a long and fragmented process in which
initiatives and projects have been allocated
around a coherent argument able to organise
the planimetric, topographic, built and functional dimensions of the Street.

The project for the prolongation of the Castellana constitutes the final episode of this
process. It thus responds to the twofold aim of
extending and finishing Madrids best street
whilst reinforcing its character as the citys central piece: attractor of the institutional directional and most qualified tertiary functions and,
therefore, a privileged space for architectural
innovation.

The prolongation of the Castellana is thus both

a project for the creation of a new centrality
and one for an urban reconstruction , making
the most of the opportunity of the obsolete railway or industrial land located in the northern
part of the city to generate a new urban tissue
to integrate in a balanced fashion infrastructural, tertiary and residential uses around the
Castellana's main axis.

In the 21st century, the axis' vertebrating character as civic insitution cannot be related with
the streets primitive function as traffic channel.
For this reason, the inspiring argument for the
project is the generation of synergies between
an accessibility based on an ample public transport service and the new central functions. In
contrast to geometric or merely casual composition criteria, the transport nodes (underground
and rail network) determine the condensation
points of the tertiary functions. A clear bet for
high rise building, from thirty to sixty floors,
with the aim of maximising accessibility and
minimising land occupancy for the benefit of
residential uses, services and open spaces.

In its bet to prolong the Castellana, creating city

within the city, Madrid moves away from the
growing tendency of dislocation of central
functions in autistic campuses in peripherical
metropolitan environments whilst it generates,
at the same time, a new space for a tipological
research in which high rise is not a mere iconic
resource but the aim of generating an intelligent answer to the organisational demands of
the contemporary city.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

How would we like to live in the isthmus? We

would imagine houses with high ceilings, similar to the traditional ones, enjoying the views
from a natural vantage point, large wall expanses protected by deep artificial and natural shadowing so that anything else is needed. The Woermann tower is a virtual forest to enjoy the
utopia of living inside a hybrid landscape. The
tower will reconcile with this idea, but it will also be an atlant which nods admiring the landscape. In the ground floor the tower is folded
back, giving space to the pedestrians and locating public facilities in the height of trees' tops.
We aimed to represent with this vegetal and anthropomorphic concept the current culture, the
Woermann tower wants to embody illusions,
desires and fantasies of a society which tries to
find agreement between nature and development, an intense way of living, loyal to the
landscape: a different beauty.
The building plays with the topic of the tropic,
with the sensuality of the curve, with the shadows and with making scale invisible, appearing
as a higher tower by means of the multiplication of the parasols. This is a direct influence of
Oscar Niemeyer and the building Copas in Sao
Paulo. On the other hand, there is colouration
and texture made not to be mimetic with the
city, but with the little dormant volcanos which
form the Canary landscape.

We were demanded singularity:
singularity in the volume and the iconography
of the building and singularity of emptiness

Entorno
instalaciones.

Surroundings
The area of the isthmus is one of
the most sensitive aeras in Las Palmas, a small neck connecting the
built area of the city with the
empty peninsula of La Isleta. Its location, between the sea and the
port, as well as its turistic and
commercial activity, give an
unique character as a crossing
point and, at the same time, it is
public transit area. The strong
compacticity of the buildings in
the isthmus, which uses the maximun space available, contrast
with the flatness of the plot where
the former Woermann building
was, where nowadays the new
tower is to be located.
We were asked for a space for the
city. And we were demanded singularity: singularity in the volume and
the iconography of the building and
singularity of emptiness, in contrast
with the massive use of space. The
aim is that the Woermann plot
would have a role in the isthmus
and the isthmus would have a role
in the city.
Structure
The structural system is conventional. It is a concrete grid structure
in the basement, with several
spans, and in the highest parts, the
tower has a stiff concrete core
which acts against the wind and a
perimetral ring of high-resistance
concrete columns which have a
very slender silhoutte. There is
nothing strange in the structure
due to the nodding of the higest
part of the tower.
Faade
The faade is formed by a grating
of 155x90cm (150x90cm in the offices and apartments in the northern part) of anodised aluminium
profiles. Three kind of basic glasses
are used at the severies: transparent or lightly coloured in blue,
coloured in special green, ornamental glasses with serigraphied
vegetable patterns; combined with
simple glass, finished in the same
way as the slab barrier. The building
is completed with parasols of
pierced aluminium sheets fixed to
the faade structure.
The exceptions of this system are
the closing of the faade and the
services area.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The ground in the past was made up by the Repsol facilities, were the big fuel storage tanks
were located. These grounds, divided in two by
the railway, strategically located next to the city
center, and the vicinity of the port, an area
halfway between industrial enclaves and residential areas, which has been wolfed down and
surpassed by urban growth since the second
half of the past century.
The Maser Plan adjusts to the potentiality of the
town plan were it is located and is formulated with
the will to set up a high quality architectural, environmental and urban operation that will be used to
qualify the immediate surrounding.
A solution is proposed that synthesizes the current
urban trends in environment compactation and
protection:
- The creation of an important edification basement, with an intense functional use. Commercial,
hotel, office, cultural, recreational,... uses can appear in a mixed way.
- The layout of the 4 high buildings milestoning and
referencing the new city. Their heights are laid out
in an ascending way, reaching its maximum dimension in its farthest point, as a tribute to the new focal center of the surroundings, the new citizen
"lantern and lighthouse".
- The assignment of the north block and the southern area for implementing low occupation resources (sports, schools and social) along with a
Great Public Park.

Para una mayor optimizacin de

los sistemas energticos internos
de las edificaciones se utilizan sistemas
de dobles pieles en vidrio serigrafiado
Special emphasize has been set
in closing faades for better optimizing
internal energy systems of the buildings,
double skin systems are used in serigraphy

Entorno

Surroundings
By applying the latest trends in
urban compactation, and in
height solutions, it has been possible to liberate more than 45%
of the ground, orientated to
green areas and free spaces, and
appoint more than 15% of the
ground to public orientated facilities. The intervention also includes solutions applied to viability, such as liberation of car parking in the surface and turning it
into strategic areas, promotion of
covered bicycle and motorcycle
parking and priority of pedestrians for a greater movement
among the San Rafael neighborhoods. This way the old scar produced by the industrial character
of the area is sown.
Structure
The intention is for the new
buildings to incorporate as
many appropriate and applicable measures as possible for improving the protection of the
environment and energy saving
of the future users. Among all
the possible measures, the following are highlighted: rationalization of the use of water; collection of solar energy for the
production of service and construction activities in residential
buildings; disposal of motion
cells in common illuminated areas; use of homologated wood
coming from quick replanting
and growing woods; and perennial or deciduous leaf gardens,
for shadowing or boosting sun
exposure, depending on the
time of the year.
Faade
The priority for laying out double
faades entails the promotion of
natural crossed ventilations.
Special emphasize has been set in
closing faades for better optimizing internal energy systems of
the buildings, this way, double
skin systems are used in serigraphy glass and great perimetral
heights in maintenance bridges,
which besides reducing the consumption in air conditioning in
summer, minimizing the solar factor in internal face glass, allowing
buildings with great transparency, creating a great visual effect.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

At the beginning, the original use for the building

was the one of housing. For the politicians, the municipal technicians and for ourselves, it was sad to
use the extraordinary plot and volume in a such
common programme. Several projects were designed for this use, in the last one of these projects
the idea of diving the tower, which was heavy due
to short height, in two towers more slender. With
this procedure, moreover, we managed that the
tower of the end would be all inside in great square
of the Forum of Cultures.
The programme changed the use from housing to
a five star hotel. The use of a hotel made almost
inviable diving the building in two fully independent towers. Therefore, we designed a first project
with a L-shaped plan. However, different colleagues of the Municipal Quality Commission
made us see that the bow had lost its expressiveness and told us that it was a pity to abandon
the idea of the double tower.
It was then when we considered the possibility of
building two towers communicated by a glass
bridge. The fact that the bridge is made with glass,
in the laterals and the pavement, is fundamental because, from the Diagonal avenue, we will see the
building always against the light, as all the buildings
looking to the northern part, which along the avenue, are more gloomy-looking as the ones in the
southern part. The glass crevice will let the sun pass
through and will project a spectacular ray of light
over the pavement of the avenue.

Estructuralmente, tenemos tres edificios

independientes: las dos torres de estructura de

As a structure, we have three independent
buildings: two towers with a concrete structure
and a bridge of a metallic structure

Entorno

Surroundings
This triangular plot is absolutely exceptional. In this point starts the
grid of the Eixample and its more
characteristic exception: the diagonal of the Diagonal avenue. All architects have dreamed of working in
such characteristic plot.
This kind of corner, very sharp, between the weave of the Eixample
and the Diagonal avenue has appeared in some other points, but it
has never been so radical, without
been rounded as a sharpedbow.

Estructura
acercarse o a separarse unos 20 cm.
Esto ha obligado a unas uniones de
diseo muy sofisticadas. Respetando absolutamente el criterio de
nuestros estructuristas, he hecho
unas pequeas muescas en estas
uniones deslizantes y he invitado a

Structure
As a structure, we have three independent buildings: the two towers
with a concrete structure and a
bridge of metallic structure. The
three of them, supported in the
ground floor, are joined together
but they do not transmit loads to
each other. Theoretically, the three
buildings oscillate independently
with the strength of the wind. After some very complex calculations
it was found out that in its end
they could approach or separate
around 20cm. This has made necessary very sophisticated unions.
Respecting the criteria of our structure engineers, I have made some
little notches in these sliding
unions and I have bet with my
team that I will invite them to dinner in a three star restaurant the
day that movements bigger than a
5 cm can be appreciated.

Fachada

Faade
The great glass faades are opened
to the South and the faade looking
to the Diagonal is very opaque with
a dramatic luminous crevice which,
in the lower floors, is enlarged forming the access to the hotel.
The three lifts which lead to the highest point of the building are closed in
a glass box and give some dynamism
to the west faade.
The columns and structural layers
are made of concrete dyed with
blue and orange. The opaque skin,
very present in Diagonal avenue, of
aluminum layers. Along the ground
floor there is a slate pedestal.
The transparent glass faades are
always bended by an outside skin
with serigraphied glass strips
which, without covering the
views, protect the direct radiation
of the sun.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The project is located in the CAC-3 plot, in Valencia, and gives response to the preliminary
studies, made in 2004, for the urban regeneration and volumetric proposal for high-rise housing at the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias. The
project shown in these pages displays four towers terraced in different heights (30, 36, 40 y
50), with some percentages of the use around
60,000m2 used for facilities and 90,000m2
used for housing. It was intended to generate
the less possible impact with the generation of
four different volumes. The distribution of the
towers avoids placing the towers too near to
each other, providing all the flats with privileged views.
Next to the towers, and extended as a tongue
along the Turia river, a basement used for car
parking locates green and shopping areas,
whereas the first levels lodge offices and the
highest floors are for residential uses with different typologies.
The prominent basement was an idea consenting the notion of the neighbouring interpretation which was wanted by the people in the
oldest part of the city of Valencia, continuing its
weaving. Another important factor was to give
continuity to the Turia river, the great green
area was therefore enlarged and becomes the
axis and the end of the Turia, just behind the
Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias.

Los grandes voladizos de las plantas generan

zonas ajardinadas en las diferentes plantas
The great cantilevers of the plans generate
gardened areas in the different storeys

Entorno

Surroundings
The plot, located near to the green
areas generated for the Ciudad de
las Artes y las Ciencias, interacts intensevely with a part of the city
with a great history. The continuity
with the park and the respect to
this privileged area were unquestionable. The project will crown a
singular walkway over the Turia, the
modern axis of Valencia, respecting
the history and the environment.
Defined as a vegetal and vertical
continuity, more than as towers, it
is not forgotten to relate the privileges of a high-rise housing with
the ones of the Mediterranean architecture. Therefore, communication between sea and sky relates
the park with shops and housing,
with views to the Mediterranean.

Estructura
plantas generan zonas ajardinadas
en las diferentes plantas. Similares,

Structure
The structure of the four buildings
is adapted to the regular plans with
an identical central core, which
takes in account in its location distances and heights, terracing them
vertically and horizontally. The great
cantilevers of the plans generate
gardened areas in the different
storeys. Similary, yet with different
heights, the storeys twist and include empty spaces to provide intimacy to the apartments.
The biggest bid is made in the basement: being free from tertiary uses,
which are located in the first floors
of the towers, the basement can be
used as a green area.

Fachada
Las torres presentan varias capas
entre su lmite interior y el lmite
exterior.

Faade
The towers present different layers
between the interior and exterior
limits. Formed by a superposition of
four layers, the semi-covered balcony and the adjustable vertical
protection (screens) have as an exterior barrier the vertical plane
made of tubular closing. This,
added to the vegetal layer made of
ivy applied to the faade, achieves
the aim of bringing the park, with
its plants, to each one of the apartments of the four towers.
The tubes and the ivy will act over
the usual closing made of glass and
over the exterior-interior limit as a
filter for the warm Mediterranean
climate as well as providing natural
ventilation. Besides, the mesh will
allow enjoying the views without
being seen.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The building is defined by its urban components,

which provide it with its basic volumetry, and its
functional components, which articulate its interior and determine its section. The programme
has two main parts. The first one, an administrative section, is divided in departments and uses
the upper part of the tower, in open and flexible
floors. The second part, including public uses, will
relate the building with the urban flows and in
the project is designed as the building's permeability.
This division of the programme is shown in its
section through two atriums at different heights.
The administrative programme uses the upper
two thirds of the tower, only restricted to the
staff of the building and their clients or collaborators. The highest part of this administrative programme is used for corporate and representative
functions. The two highest floors include the President's and CEO's offices and the Board Room
open onto a terrace.
The public programme, formed by exhibition areas and a lecture hall open to visitors, and by education areas for the company staff, is located in
the lower floors around a 30 metre high atrium,
which continues the slope of the adjacent Forum
square. This direct physical and visual continuity
will make the tower participate in the citizens' activities and will turn citizens into participants of
the building's activities, creating synergies which
will help to activate the Forum area in Barcelona.

Entorno

Surroundings
The Telefonica Tower is located in
the starting point of the Diagonal
avenue, in an exceptional location, very visible form the city and
the coast. It is, also, the frontier
between the consolidated city and
the great public area of the Forum, in a context of diverse scales
and uses which constitutes at the
same time a metropolitan pole
and a local environment yet under
construction.
It is a contextual tower which
recollects the different circumstances of the environment in a
volumetry which has a double
reading, from far an close up.
The building is shown to the city
as a sharp and slender prism, a
light and white form which is related to its urban position and
the big blue builiding of the Forum. The tower protects the several interior volumes with different programme uses. There are
also related to the different
heights of the surrounding
buildings. The external shape is
related to the city and view from
afar, while the interior forms
correspond to the the close-up
experience of the building.

Estructura
interior, regular y difusa, formada
ncleo central.

Structure
The structure is concentrated in
the faade and in a very compact
interior core, made of reinforced
concrete, which lincludes lifts,
stairs and services.. The perimetral
structure is differenced in two
parts: an interior one, regular and
widespread, formed by very slender elements which take over the
compression forces; whereas the
exterior solves the horizontal and
the torsion forces, forming a
rhomboidal structure which follows the static needs of each part
of the building. The concrete slabs
transmit these horizontal forces to
the central core.

Fachada
cristal extraclaro parcialmente serigrafiado.
deslumbramiento.

Faade
The faade consists of a modular
curtain wall made of white aluminum and partly serigraphed extraclear glass. In combination with
the interior structure, placed every
1.35 metre, and the exterior structure, this serigraphy contributes to
the distribution of the solar light
and to control the dazzling.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The Water Tower has the aim to become a territorial reference, with an emblematic character,
a recognizable and clear symbol of the International Exposition in Zaragoza 2008. Its forms
and spaces want to become the expression of
the ideas of fluidity and movement, along with
notions of transparency and lightness.
There was a basic decision in the design: the
distinction between a pedestal, which enables the efficient settlement of the building
to solve the different soil levels, and a big
shaft, which constitutes the tower itself. The
pedestal is a trapezoidal geometry in the
ground floor, massive, built in white concrete. Its roofing becomes a walkaway, connecting the building to the central square of
the Expo. The shaft is a light construction, a
sinuous geometry with a curtain wall skin,
protected with a horizontal canopy which assumes the shape of a double helicoid. The interior is the principal protagonist of the
building being, basically, the addition of two
big empty spaces.
The aim has been to get the most of the singular condition of this high exhibition pavilion. This is achieved with the creation of an
itinerary: a double helicoidal ramp (6% of
slope) which surrounds all the sinuous perimeter until it reaches the upper space. This path
allows not only the view of the inside, but also becomes a belvedere.

The tower defines its richness by a series of layers
which give thickness to the transition between the
inside and the outside

Entorno

Surroundings
The tower is located in the metropolitan park of the meander of
Ranillas. It is surrounded by a canal
of wild waters and a big car park.
Therefore, the building is outside
the Expo complex, separated by
the ring road.
While the construction of the
pedestal allows the building to be
settled, the high dimension shaft
means an emblematic presence of
the building. Its shapes respond to
the conditions of the site. The cylindric part of the volume shows the
condition of the tower as core of
the park, whereas one of its ends
points to the central square of the
Expo, which is visually aimed, as the
walkway is, to the most outstanding buildings of the city centre.
Structure
Supported by a 1.5m slab as foundation, the concrete pedestal is finished off in a great space covered
by a triangular ribbed slab borne by
tapered columns. This slab is
opened in the central point following the curved lines of the higher
shaft. Two vertical concrete cores,
the main support of the building,
pass through this emptiness, where
the stairs are located. They bear
the slab, intermediate and of conclusion, as well as joining a triangular peripheral metallic mesh,
through the landings and the helicoid ramps.
Faade
All the constructive intensity of
the tower is situated in the skin.
The tower defines its richness by a
series of layers which give thickness to the transition between the
inside and the outside. The structural mesh supports outside two
ramps and inside the curtain wall,
the cleaning walkways and the
canopies made with pierced and
folded plate. Along with the
curved guideline, the curtain wall
is defined by a diagonal system of
generatix, which proportionates
to the solid an idea of torsion and
rotation. In addition to this, the
winding movement of the
canopies activates the perception
of the tower as a dynamic volume, forming multiple formal
configurations, different from
every point of view.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

It is about two towers and attached buildings in

Hangzhou, but if a precise choreography of
turning hands is added and they are accompanied of a -not less surprisingly- cheering with
the arms of someone, sooner or later, they will
repeat with a smile how much do they like the
movement of the towers, this slippery way how
they relate to each other. Because we have to
add to the words a a curling movement with
the hands to make possible that the listener's
mind is crossed by the idea of a familiar dance.
Suddenly, from the tip of the tongue, where it
was hiding, a word will come out: FLAMENCO.
Hangzhou is a city near to Shangai, traditionally working as two complementary cities: the
first one is an example of historical heritage
conservation and the second of urban congestion. Currently, Hangzhou committed itself to
a urban increase which recognizes the value
of landscape and the history that have characterized it, specially in relation to the famous
West Lake. To decongestionate the current
city centre, which has grown around the lake,
new territories have been used in the bank of
the Qiantang river. And it is there, between
these two areas, as a new city centre, where
the Flamenco Towers wiggle as buildings of
220 metre height with 55 storeys. One of the
towers will become a hotel and a spa, whereas the other has a mixed programme of housing and offices.

Entorno

Surroundings
It is located in the delta of the
Yangzi river which, with a total
population of more than 80 million of people, is one of the
biggest urban areas in the world.
The Flamenco Towers are situated in the city of Hangzhou, 180
kilometres far from Shangai, although a project to build a magnetic train will reduce to 28 minutes the trip between the two
cities, approaching Hangzhou to
the international airport of
Pudong.
The plot is in the Binjiang district,
over the bank of the Qiantang river, just between the historical centre and Xiaoshan, district in development where the international
airport is located. This is the strategic position of the Flamenco Towers, an icon in the new centre of
Hangzhou.
Structure
After analyzing the requests and
the economical conditions, it came
out the conclusion that to have a
steady building and, at the same
time, with a light structure, the
best option was to build a central
core of reinforced concrete, a
structural faade with standard
steel profiles and a deck-type composite steel panel for the slabs.
The central structural core lodges
vertical communication elements
and services.
Faade
The Flamenco Towers have a
faade which accentuates the
movement of the structure. Each
tower has two types of faades:
one with a curved configuration
and another with a straight configuration. For the curved one,
the structure is in the exterior,
whereas for the straight one the
structure is located in the interior,
both of them forming a superstructure with the shape of great
mesh which give the towers their
look. The central core absorves
the different behaviour between
the faade's structure due to
temperature caused by interiorexterior nature.
All the closing's structural elements are dimensioned and distributed in a way that lessen obstacle to the faade's transparency.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

Nowadays it is undeniable that football is the

biggest phenomenon in Europe. Consequently,
in the 21st century football stadiums have became one of the main attractions. A city develops proportionally to the progress of its local
football team. The development of the cities
has made possible that football stadiums, which
previously where located in the suburbs, are today in the city centre, inside the urban weave.
Now, any infrastructure thought as a attraction
is necessarily related with commerce.
The proposal made by Estudio Lamela understands this double condition and, therefore, it is
designed to use the 360 grades of the perimeter of the stadium in a different way. That is the
reason why the Rico Prez stadium will have a
132 m-height tower with 29 storeys, which will
become the highest tower in Alicante. The project highlights the characteristics of the site,
generating an unitary and strong image distinctive in a football stadium. The tower is
thought not as an juxtaposed element to the
stadium, on the contrary, tower and stadium
act as a whole.
The outcome is an innovative but solid design.
A powerful image which plays and participates in the city and its symbols. An opportunity to reactive the city with urban facilities,
thinking in the city's development to consolidate it. A new lighthouse, a light thrown to
the stars in the sky.

The tower is not a prism, but it is part of the
stadium and has the same discourse

Entorno
Y convertirse as en dotaciones hbridas urbanas.
El nuevo estadio del Rico Prez tiene
que jugar con esta doble condicin:
servir al Hrcules C. F y servir, mirar,
proyectarse a la ciudad de Alicante.

Surroundings
Currently, Rico Prez Stadium needs
a rebuilding and the incorporation
of new programmes which will take
in account the social opportunity
that football arises. It will become,
thus, urban hybrid equipping.
The new Rico Prez Stadium has to
serve this double requirement: be
used by the Hrcules C.F. and, at
the same time, look at and be projected to Alicante.

Estructura
La torre propuesta puede albergar
cualquier uso y gestin.
permitiendo as un espacio ptimo
a ambos lados para distribucin de
cualquier tipo de uso. La modulacin propuesta (1,35 m x 1,35 m)
permite la mxima flexibilidad y
economa. La distribucin permite
divisiones desde 300 m2 hasta 35

Structure
The proposal can lodge any use.
With a height of 32 metres and 29
storeys, the tower will become the
highest tower in Alicante.
Regarding to the tower, the core is
situated in the central area, providing the optimum space at both
sides to be distributed for any kind
of use. The proposed modulation
(1.35x1.35m) gives the maximum
flexibility and economy. The distribution can be made in sections
from 300m2 till 35m2. This is an
extra value, because flexibility in
use is one of the requirements of
the design.

Fachada

Faade
Currently there is a main faade, at
the West. Taking in account this
consideration, it is clear that first
measure was to use the 4 faades.
We drew up the outline of the stadium with the aim of using the
maximum available square metres.
The proposal thinks of the 360
grades and generates an architectural typology continuing the current football stadium.
It is yet to be decided how the
faade is going to be carried out,
since it is only a project. However, curtain wall has been discarded. On the contrary, a double
skin, with an interior chamber
use for maintenance, will cover
the stadium and the tower taking in account the environmental and climatic requirements of
the building. The tower, which
will not have a pedestal, is not a
prism, but it is part of the stadium and follows the same discourse.
The tower will become an urban
landmark, with a nick where a ray
of light will be shone. This, with a
colour code, will inform about the
victories of the team.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The project located in the Gijn waterfront demanded maximizing visibility of the building both from the
access road, as well as from the exit of the urban centre. Added to this was the construction in height
which acts as a liberation mechanism of public
ground, and the desire for transparency between the
beach and the urban centre.
The future hotel has privileged pedestrian accessibility to the urban centre as well as to the beach, being
the Museum of the Railroad the only object between
the site and the beach.
To optimize the views to the sea, we have condensed
all the buildable area of the site to reach the maximum possible slenderness. This slenderness will also
diminish the shadow thrown on the surrounding area
by the new tower. In this sense, the building is proposed as a crystal tower, with a skin of waved glass,
that emerges from a garden, like a miniature of the
Asturian landscape and orography.
Its circular geometry will guarantee both the exposure of the sun to all the rooms, and the views to the
sea from each one of them. A central core of vertical
circulation with panoramic elevators that face the city,
will provide access to eight rooms in each one of the
20 levels of the hotel, avoiding long access corridors
and producing a very intimate atmosphere.
The hotel rooms have been designed with a truncated wedge form, in which access, wash and wardrobe
zones are located in the inner part, and the dormitory and living-room are located next to the entirely
glazed faade, maximizing the views.

Entorno

Surroundings
The future hotel is located in the
Gijn waterfront, a privileged position in terms of pedestrian accessibility both to the urban center as
well as to the beach. The buildings
location has also very privileged
views to the sea.
The brief was to maximise the visibility of the building both from the
west access road, as well as from
the exit of the urban center. This
visibility, in addition to the construction in height which acts as a liberation mechanism of public ground,
and the desire for transparency between the beach and the urban
centre, are the primary arguments
for the project.

Estructura
tanto, largos pasillos y produciendo
una atmsfera muy ntima y lujosa.

Structure
A central core of vertical circulation
with panoramic elevators that face
the city will provide access to eight
rooms in each one of the 20 levels of
the hotel, therefore avoiding long access corridors and producing a very
intimate and luxurious atmosphere.

Fachada

Faade
The building is proposed as a crystal tower with a skin of waved
glass that emerges from a garden
with a waved topography, like the
Asturian landscape and orography.
The hotel rooms have been designed with a truncated wedge
form, in which access, wash and
wardrobe zones are located in the
inner part, and the dormitory and
living-room are located in an elongated area, adjacent to the entirely
glazed facade, maximizing the
views. A slight swelling of the envelope, like a bay-window in each
one of the rooms, distinguishes the
living-room from the sleeping area,
minimizing through its convex surface, the reflections in the glass
from the interior. In the even plans,
this swelling is located to the east
of the rooms, whereas in the odd
numbers it is located to the west.
The crystalline membrane unites
the bay-windows diagonally, so
that it produces an oblique undulation of the glass membrane that
characterizes both the outer texture of the facade, as well as the
experience from the interior, similar
to being within an aquatic environment, in resonance with the location of the hotel.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

In the highest point in the north-south ring road of

Madrid, four huge skyscrappers of private construction are currently being built. The buildable area of
public constructionin in this location will be used to
build an international congress centre.
The proposal starts with the necesity of making
public buidings visible, not accepting a condition of
simple horizontal base in service of the high buildings made by private companies.
Starting with a decision to enlarge the green area,
the conference centre is organised as a high structure, optimized and efficient.
The building stablishes coexisting strategies with the
four skyscrappers by means of scale and shape.
Thus, the Madrid International Convention Centre
(M.I.C.C.) explores the scale of the landscape and
the abstract manipulation of the round shape to
solve a programme of a high convention centre.
With this mechanism of territory interchange (object
vs. landscape, horizontal vs. vertical) one can clearly
see that the reduction of strategies involves an increase in creativity, as an increase in the ability of social legibility.
The proposal for the M.I.C.C. aims to build a new
social landscape that will reach from the new Airport Terminal in Madrid to the highway to La
Corua, from La Castellana street to the highway
to Burgos, remembering the easy coexistence of
towers and circular shapes, domes and cathedrals,
in our cities.

Entorno

Surroundings
The area where the competition is located needs an optimistic intervention able to
qualify the whole of the public
spaces and buildings surrounding it, giving the International
Convention Centre a powerful
presence, without being veiled
with the four huge towers.

Estructura
organizacin estructural (densificacin, verticalizacin, perfilado

Structure
Starting with the decision of
enlarging the green areas, the
convention centre is organized
as a vertical structure with a
circular profile which tries to be
related with the towers as
domes used to get along with
bell towers.
TheMadrid International Convention Centre is organized as
a great structure of different
storeys, a huge artificial sun
which will illuminate the city.
The process of structural organization (concentration, verticalization, circular outlining,
stratification and perforation)
tries to equip it with a powerful
representative condition which
is not veiled by the presence of
the four huge towers.

Fachada
constelaciones.

Faade
The building is constructed between two areas and it is a circular shape . These two circles
are enlarged to fit facilities and
vertical communication elements: lifts, escalators and fire
escapes, being all of them
large spaces and, thus, creating
two wide bays. Nowadays big
cultural and business buildings
can be structured in circulation
criteria similar to the one of
high malls. This gives to these
constructions a efficient, versatile and dynamic functioning.
Between the two vertical communication bays, there are a
group of flexible wide spaces
which solve the challenging
programme of a convention
centre. The solar discs are
pierced, without affecting the
technical elements, following
some performance models, establishing a structure with
some similarities to the complex gravitional relations of
the constellations.

lenguajes diversos.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The project for the Conference Centre, of which

the Hotel AC Diagonal Mar is a part, was from
the beginning thought of as a duality: a hard,
tall, geometric, urban side, corresponding to the
construction fronting Taulat street - the Hotel is
a part of this world - and a soft, low, organic,
landscape side: namely, the Convention Centre.
The north strip (A), comprising buildings to complement the Convention Centre (hotel, offices),
had to be more urban, mineral, inorganic, hard.
It configures a boundary, a wall, but one that
had to be open. Its great height called for the
potential of many possible interpretations: continuously as a front on the street, volumetric and
open in its upper part in vistas from the city at a
distance, where the existing shopping centre
would act as a plinth.
The AC hotel is a solid piece, a sculptured volume with relatively small windows. The cut at
the middle of its height and a certain shaping of
the mass are reinforced by the different quality
of it external surfaces cut, polished or bush-hammered Extremeo granite.
From the street, a degree of complex transparency ought to be possible. All of this explains the
volumetric evolutions of the strip: how the pieces
fracture towards the top in the form of intermediate incisions, the empty spaces between them,
and the consistency of their skins, based on the
differing qualities of the light in and endeavour
to coordinate various languages.

The hotel is located in a moment of
connection between juxtaposed realities

Entorno

Surroundings
This is the typical moment of connection between juxtaposed realities that characterises the contemporary city, the border between city and nature; where historical outlines coexist, the social
housing neighbourhood of the
South-West Bess estate, built in
the 1950s with its abstract geometrical layout, the new American-style urban developments of
housing blocks in the middle of
Diagonal Mar Park, dating from
the 1990s, the large technical infrastructures and, dominating
them all, the sea to the south and
the mountains of the prelittoral
range to the north.

Structure
The general structure layout
therefore adjusts to spans in the
floor slab that might be termed
domestic, and is resolved generically by solid slabs of reinforced
concrete and columns of the same
material.
The use of active elements to control the load-bearing and deformability is important for the
large cantilevered volumes. These
elements are post-tensioned tendons, in the case of the great concrete cantilever that forms the hotel entrance.
Worthy of mention in the case of
bracing elements is the stiffening that the hotels service floors
represent in the form of structures
of main beams that serve to correct the accumulated deformation
according to the cantilever
scheme, with all the added advantages of the frame effect.
Faade
The idea of the project is to build a
ventilated faade, finished in granite,
with concealed fixings, hung from an
auxiliary aluminium structure, anchored to the edge of the slab, with
different types of polishing to give
the different textures of the project.
The ventilated stone faade features pivoting aluminium coldbridge-free window frames, of
varying dimensions. The support for
this metalwork is adapted to each
position: flush in the interior of the
room; on the same plane as the
faade and projecting with respect
to the exterior faade.

The Mapfre tower is an emblematic element

of the most important transformation
Barcelona, ended in 1992: the Villa Olmpica, which opened the city to the sea. It was
designed starting with the definition of the
circular sector with low voluem of fourfloors.
Its main faade adapts to the sinuosity of the
urban park in the Litoral avenue. The building offers a totally regular faade to this avenue. This is achieved with rectangular windows and prefabricated concrete elements
with texture and quartering inspired in Catalan Art Nouveau. The tower stands up as a
perfect parallelepiped with a vibrant faade
which accentuates its view to the sea from
the inside. The plan is square and symmetric.
The back faade is the necessary backdrop
for volumetry of the building to express all
its contundency over a neutral background
made with concrete prefabricated elements.
The shopping building, Marina Shopping Port
Olimpic, is located in a great plot, next to the
yacht harbour. It is also a gardened area,
with palm trees which contribute to the feeling of recreation. To increase pedestrian use,
a great concrete canopy was designed. It is
located at the roof and used as a balcony in
the first floor, looking over the yatch harbour. The building has a heliport in the roof.

inoxidable
The concern of making a faade which would
protect the building from direct solar radiation was
solved using different types of stainless steel

Entorno

Surroundings
The urban plan of Luis Vallejo has
the same quality standards of the
whole urban plan of all the Villa
Olmpica. It uses less materials in
order to create an entrance with
a surprisingly elegant and singular atmosphere. It is important to
highlight the slanting roof covered with plants, which is placed
as a coloured base between the
ground floor and the tower. At
the outside there is a sculpture,
by Andreu Alfaro, made of stainless steel with an organic shape.
It is 26m high and is a reference
to reinforce the geometric volumetry of the different buildings.

Estructura

Structure
The structure of the towers is
mixed with a reinforced concrete
core made with climbing formwork, which was a hit in the
city's skyline and with perimetral
metallic columns of high resistance. The location of these
columns, eleven metres far from
the core, gives transparency the
offices. The slabs are mixed:
made by concrete and metallic
beams. All the metallic pieces of
the stucture are screwed on and
fireproved. The concrete core absorbs horizontal forces whereas
the metallic columns of high resistance absorb vertical ones. This
kind of structure has facilitated
the quickness of the construction, as well as it has helped the
fact of making the stringers and
the parapets of the faade with
concrete prefabricated elements.

Fachada
mxima calidad visual, gran aislamiento trmico global e importantes

Faade
The outside is made with stainless steel and slanting blue glass
with walkways and eaves in each
floor which give the silhouette a
different aspect to other offices'
buildings. The concern of making
a faade which would protect the
building from direct solar radiation was solved using different
kinds of stainless steel to achieve
the maximum visual quality and,
at the same time, the cantilevers
avoid the spread of a possible
fire. Moreover, the system of
ledges and eaves made of stainless steel are screwed, increasing
the quality of the construccion of
the building.

The Hercules' Towers are located in the polgono Guadacorte in the town of Los Barrios,
Cdiz.
The building is formed by two circle towers, of
80m high, joined by a transparent bridge which
lodges the communication walkways. It has 20
floors over gradient to be used as offices in the
great majority, although some of them could
have a commercial use; basically, facilities as
cafs, bank offices, copy shops, travel agencies
and messenger services.
The total surface will be over 19,000m 2, each
floor has more than 900m2. The construction
volume allowed is divided in two, so that each
tower becomes more slender.
The towers, alluding to the legendary "Hercules' Towers", will gush from some water
which will surround them. Its exterior look is
marked by the structure of the building, as
great lattice which will wrap them totally.
This exterior grid will be extended over the roof
of the building, reaching a height of 100m as
a singular element which will crown the towers
and will protect the balcony-viewpoint.
The creation of an intermediate technical floor
has been eluded in order to consume less office
surface. The services have been divided in two
areas: a cabin, situated in the roof, and a small
basement.
The opening of the Hercules' Towers is expected at the end of 2008.

Entorno
El entorno prximo est cargado
de historia, simbolismo y tiene un
fuerte carcter estratgico. Se trata
del Estrecho de Gibraltar y la baha
de Algeciras, en Cdiz. El entorno
inmediato es el polgono industrial
de Guadalcorte, an en proceso de
consolidacin.
vistas panormicas. Las Torres sern
un referente en el campo de Gibraltar.

Surroundings
The general surroundings are full of
history, symbolism and have a
strong strategic character. It is the
strait of Gibraltar and the bay of Algeciras, in Cadiz. The inmediate
surroundings are the industrial park
of Guadalcorte, in a process of consolidation. Finally, the environmental surroundings are very aggressive
due to the proximity of the sea, the
contaminant agents and the strong
winds.
The addition of all these conditions
made us think of a building of a
small plan and a great height
which would separate the building
from the inmediate surroundings
and will bring nearer the general
surroundings. We were thinking
about a location with wonderful
panoramic views. The towers will
become a reference in Gibraltar.

Estructura
portante. Esta, de hormign blanco
visto, est formada por pilares, vigas y
figuras que crean una celosa.

Structure
The towers are fully executed with
reinforced concrete formed by
several elements. First, there is a
eccentric stiff core in each tower,
where facilities spaces and all the
vertical distribution elements are
located (lifts, stairs and services).
From the core to the supporting
faade, there are reinforced flat
slabs. The faade, made with
white concrete, is formed by
columns, beams and shapes which
form a lattice.

Fachada

Faade
The faade is made with a structural lattice which constitutes, on one
hand, the look of the building and,
on the other, protects from the excessive sun the continuous glass enclosure limiting the offices' floors.
The existent passages between
these two skins of the faade are
used for maintenance and for sectoring each of the floors, which allow us to have glass from the floor
to the top, increasing the natural
light and the relation with the environment in a sustainable way.
The outside lattice has also the
function of protecting the inside of
the offices from an excessive solar
radiation in all the orientations, but
without hampering the panoramic
views of the bay of Algeciras, the
strait of Gibraltar, the rock of
Gibraltar to the South and the
mountainous area in the North.

piezas verticales. Para acentuar la sensacin de
independencia de estas tres piezas todas arrancan
y rematan a alturas diferentes.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

Verticality gives to a high rise building its character. Therefore, slenderness is more important
than height. The division of the volume in three
parts, separated by vertical fissures, increases
the slenderness. These crevices introduce light
to the building and create the illusion of a
union of vertical pieces. To accentuate the sensation of independence in these three pieces all
of them start and end at different heights. It is
this resource that solves the union with the
ground floor and the crowning point. To avoid
an extremely obvious contact with the datum
point, the starting point of the tower is produced in a lower level, entering through a kind
of bridge to the principal halls of the hotel and
the offices, which are located in different
faades.
The plans shape comes out on one hand, in the
minimum surfarce resistance to the wind, and
on the other to the optimum relation between
the useful surface and the length of the faade.
The plan has been created by means of a rigorous geometry of tangent circumferences from
an equilateral triangle. A double faade standardizes the image and protects the interior
from an excessive sun.
It has been consided that the clearness of the
volume is important for the distance view of the
four towers in the skyline of Madrid. The near
view of the tower relies on the faade to offer
a more elaborated appearance.

Entorno

Surroundings
The complex of the four towers
will become an important dinamizing element in northern
part of La Castellana avenue.
The intervention has entailed
some inconveniences, such as the
possible increase of the traffic. To
palliate it, a subterranean ring
road has been created to connect
the whole of the highways which
are nearby, freeing the traffic in La
Castellana. On the contrary, the
connection of La Castellana with
the Vaguada neighbourhood has
been improved. Being this one of
the highest points in Madrid, the
view of the four towers will
change its skyline sustantially.

Estructura
Se ha resuelto el edificio mediante
una estructura de ncleo central de
hormign, una estructura perimetral
de pilares mixtos y forjados de chapa
colaborante.

Structure
The structure is solved with a
structure of the concrete central
core, perimetral structure of
mixed columns and slab of collaborative sheet. The foundations
have been made with a postensioned solid slab with a thickness
of 4 metres. The resistance to the
horizontal stresses is borne with
central core which will locate the
lifts. The constructive solution is a
climbing formwork, which allows
the growing of the rest of the
structure in a spiral, arranging the
initial metallic structure of
columns and slabs with its later
concreting. The plan of three segments is very favorable for these
approaches.

Fachada

Faade
The faade is located between the
horizontal slab elements which
make independent each of the
storeys. The envelope of the
building is the solution, with a
double clousure, to the necessity
of solving the technical and the
image aspects.
An outside skin of glass, fixed to
the sections of the cantilevered
slab of the different storeys, unifies the image of the tower. This
skin, opened and permeable, is
formed by the layers of dark
glass, situated as scales, which
protect the interior of the excessive sun.
The inside faade solves the tightness and the insulation, thermic
and acoustic, directly, without the
usual curtain wall systems.

a+ ARQUITECTURA DE ALTURA ESPAOLA 2008

The tower is a proposal to solve the illumination

at the area of the intervention made in Cristo
Rey square and Arco de la Victoria, in the University campus.
It is a great "lighthouse" which, with its antennas, reaches 107 metres height. It is formed
with a higher platform opened to the public.
With its height, it is possible to illuminate the
surroundings of the existing arch.
It is located in the confluence of two important
urban ways (Reyes Catlicos avenue and Arco
de la Victoria avenue) and it is near a meeting
point of the Norte A6 highway, in the University Campus.
A new piece is introduced with this project in
an area full of heterogeneous buildings with
different qualities. However, in this case, superposition and redundancy do not turn out in a
negative result, because imbalance of forces
and masses is a curiosity and mystery source
mixed, at the same time, with the possibilities
of new materials.
The University Campus is formed with buildings
where gravity forces are clear and symmetric,
the tower is distinguished, no as a boasting but
as "different" sign. The shaken tower has become nowadays a symbol of the University
Campus. Its discourse is, without any doubt,
not easily understandable for trends or regular
references. But, on the other hand, time has
collaborated slowly in its perception.

Entorno

Surroundings
Located in Moncloa-Aravaca district, in the city of Madrid, the
Communication and Illumination
Tower of Madrid, known as Faro de
Moncloa (Moncloa's Lighthouse),
has become an iconic building in
the city. The high situation of the
Faro highlights the singularity in
comparison with the adjoining
buildings of the University campus,
which are smaller.
Due to the height of the building,
107 metre with the antenna, and
its location in the city, visitors of
the building's viewpoint discover
exceptional views of Madrid. It is
not only outstanding because of
the peripheral views, but also because any other building around
is not has high as the Faro, since
its immediate surroundings are
the University campus and the
Oeste park. It is this fact what
distinguishes the Faro clearly in
its location.
The project introduces a new piece
in a situation full of heterogeneous
buildings with different qualities.
Despite superposition and redundancy, there is no negative outcome, because imbalance is a
source of curiosity and mystery, related with the possibilities of new
materials.
Structure
The peculiarity of the Faro de Moncloa is focused in its structure and
its building process.
The tower is built over foundations
formed over eight 15m deep
screens, which outline an octagon
in plan, limiting a reinforced
postensioned concrete shaft. This
mechanism is used to balance the
platform.
A hoisting system helped by the
shaft made possible elevating the
platform, formed by a double
metallic piece of corbeled lattice
beam, counterweighted. This decision made possible having a viewpoint without any column.
Faade
The faade is covered with a skin
made of stainless steel sheets. This
sheets contrast with the more classical materials used in the buildings
surrounding the Faro de Moncloa,
as the Museum of America or the
building of the Air Force.
