The Manila Polo Club moved to Makati when it

gave up its bayside location to join the exodus to a
new suburb touted as the fresh alternative to wartorn central Manila. board enlisted the talents of
Pablo Antonio Sr. as architect. Antonio designed a
horizontal complex with large assembly hall-cumlobby and commodious spaces for dining, lounging
and viewing the polo games. The design evoked
an elegant lifestyle that set the trend for the homes
that eventually rose around it. Antonio used the
best Philippine wood and stone and also set the
buildings tastefully in a landscape setting designed
by planner and landscape architect Louis P. Croft,
who was an adviser to President Manuel Quezon
before the war. The long sinuous and dramatic
drive from McKinley to the steps of the clubhouse
is part of his contribution.

Built at about the same time as the Cultural Center

of the Philippines, the Folk Arts Theater (also
known as Tanghalang Francisco Balagtas) was
intended as a venue for popular forms of
entertainment such as local folk dances and
performances by visiting pop stars. The building is
a semi-open auditorium without walls or air
conditioning (presumably, the breeze blowing
inland from nearby Manila Bay was expected to do
the job), and was actively used in the 1980s and
early 1990s. Having been superseded by the
better-equipped
Philippine
International
Convention Center (PICC), it has now entered into
a comparatively fallow period.

Fort San Antonio Abad de Abad, a fortress built in

the 16th century during the Spanish colonial
period, to guard against pirates and other
near
unwanted company. In modern times, Fort Abad
serves as a special venue for receptions for visiting
dignitaries and guests of the Philippine
Government.

a grand Art Deco structure that provided

entertainment for generations of Manilans. 1930s,
a landmark building that helped define Manila's
downtown Avenida Rizal. Named after the street
it was on, one of the premier movie houses of
Manila. Nakpil designed it as a cutting-edge
cinema before the war and he renovated it after
the war to cater to new technologies of airconditioning, Technicolor and wide screens.

architectural style popular during the post-World
War II years, a low single-story structure whose

structures from that forgotten era.

Erected on Casino Espaol property, the new

building located on the far side of the existing club
quadrangle is architecture of the 21st century, a
structure in total contrast with the Zaragoza
building on the other side of the shared
quadrangle. Contrasting with the arches of the
Casino's loggia, a two-story all-glass wall looking
out to the quadrangle from behind a covered open
walk connecting classrooms on the ground floor
and exposing the library above. Although no details
in the new building mimic the old Zaragoza
structure beside it, there is full architectural respect
between the two structures.

Phoenix Building

San Sebastian Church, the only steel church in

Asia that was built by the Augustinian Recollect
Order in 1886. The parts were fabricated in
Calle San Sebastian Brussels, Belgium and were shipped to Manila for
(now Hidalgo St.) Manila assembly. This Gothic Revival Church was put
under NHI conservation program after having been
identified as a world endangered site plagued as it
is by years of rust caused by air pollution.

a long-forgotten Manila architectural landmark. For

its architectural value, NHI has installed a historical
marker in the building in April 2004, Gota de
Leche's second marker after its first, which
honored the pioneering and historic work of La
Proteccion de la Infancia, parent NGO of Gota de
Leche, which also spearheaded the restoration of
the building, the same building where it was
founded.The Gota de Leche, true to its name
(translated as drop of milk) has been a feeding
center for indigent children since 1907. The
original low building was designed by architect
Arcadio Arellano in 1915 and was completed two
years later in 1917. It was modeled after one of the
architecture world's icons, the Ospedale degli
Innocenti, an orphanage in Florence, designed and
built by the renowned Renaissance architect
Brunelleschi, an inspiration that well served Gota
de Leches function.Today, Gota has expanded its
services to include mothers. It is now also the
headquarters of the Kababaihan Laban sa
Karahasan Foundation, an NGO focused on
women's rights. has a canteen and an Internet
center, for students and researchers

Situated within a forest of mango trees, this unique

chapel is sheltered by an anahaw/cogon
combination tent roof. It is basically a suspended
roof structure and open at all sides. The anahaw
leaves used for the roof were chemically treated to
preserve the structure longer. No trees were cut
down in the site during the construction. Instead,
the church is nestled in natures bosom and the
surrounding are integrated with the church itself.
The interiors make novel use of capiz shells in the
form of doves in flight in the interior not only
illuminating the space but adding a sense of
movement that makes this place unique.

And half the size of the entire Vatican City! And if
you fancy building a pyramid as big as in Giza
you can fit 4 of those in the Istana Nurul Iman.It is
larger than the Buckingham Palace in London and
the Royal Palace in Madrid. has 1,788 rooms to
start, 257 bathrooms. It has a Throne Hall, a
banquet hall that can accommodate 4,000 guests;
a mosque that can fit 1,500 people. 5 swimming
pools, 564 chandeliers, 44 stairwells, and 18
elevatorsand central airconditioning. Istana means
"palace", Nurul means "light" and Iman means
"believe". The Istana Nurul Iman: Treasure of
Brunei, Pride of Southeast Asia.
