Taxes going up

Indians take on Renegades

Residents to see slight increase

in 2015 municipal tax bill
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Mt. Laurel residents will see a
small increase in their municipal
tax bill.
Mt. Laurel Council unanimously adopted its 2015 budget on
second reading at last weeks
meeting. Residents with an average assessed home of $237,518
will have an increase of $14 on
their municipal tax bill this year.
The increase in taxes will allow
the township to maintain all services and employees.
The total budget amount is
$37.59 million, a decrease of
$507,048 from last year. Township
manager Maureen Mitchell said
the decrease is due to less expected revenue from grants. The
township has only budgeted for
$127,965 worth of grants, a decrease from the $968,957 it had in
2014.
Mt. Laurel didnt get any extra
help from the state government
this year, either. The township is
receiving $2.83 million in state
aid, the same it has received for
the past six years.
Our state aid has remained
stagnant since 2010, Mitchell
said.

Mt. Laurel is also using $5.6

million from its fund balance for
this years budget.
Were using the same figure
weve used in prior years,
Mitchell said.
The $5.6 million of utilized surplus is the same the township
used in 2013 and 2014 and is considerably lower than 2008 through
2011, when the township utilized
more than $6 million of surplus
each year. Mitchell said using the
same amount of surplus on an
annual basis helps keep the township on solid financial footing.
Because of the lower amount of
expected revenue, Mitchell said it
was necessary for the township to
include a small tax increase to
prevent any layoffs. If the township were to keep taxes flat, it
would have to cut about $300,000
from its budget. Mitchell said employees likely would have lost
jobs in that case.
Also included in the budget are
open space and library taxes. The
open space tax rate is locked in at
8 percent, meaning residents will
pay the same open space tax as in
2014.
Residents will get some slight

Mt. Laurel Council has given

its overwhelming support to the
Mt. Laurel Police Departments
re-launch of its K9 program.
Now, the police department is
hoping the community will offer
its support as well.
Council passed a resolution to
establish a trust fund for the police departments K9 program.
Mt. Laurel Police are planning to
have a K9 return to the force in
September. It will be the first time
the police department will have a
K9 since 2001.
Police Chief Dennis Cribben is

hoping to pay for the K9 program

entirely through the trust fund.
Doing so would allow the program to function while having no
additional impact on taxpayers.
The police department is relaunching the K9 program thanks
to a generous donation from police officer Christopher OPrandy,
who adopted a German Shepherd
named Tess. OPrandy is putting
Tess through K9 training classes
with the goal of having Tess join
the force on Sept. 1 and perform a
demonstration at this years Fall
Festival.
The donation allows the police
department to focus the donations on preparing for its entry

into the force.

We have to outfit our police
car, Cribben said. That will cost
about $5,000.
The police department has received offers for donations of supplies such as body armor and dog
food. Cribben hopes the generosity of the community will allow
the police department to build the
trust fund to expand the program.
We want to build up our fund
and create a reserve for things
such as health costs, Cribben
said.
Since 2001, the Mt. Laurel Police have relied on other police departments K9 units to help with
investigations. In 2014 alone, the
Mt. Laurel Police had to ask for
K9 assistance 49 times. Cribben
said re-instituting the program in
town would allow the police department to have a dog readily
available for the unit to respond
to the scene more quickly.
Cribben envisions expanding
the program to multiple dogs in
the future. While Tess is being donated to the police department,
Cribben said the trust fund might
allow the police department to
pay for the adoption of additional
dogs.
Residents can make a tax-deductible donation by mailing a
check to Police K9 Fund, 100
Mount Laurel Road, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054. Donations can also
be made in-person at the Mt. Laurel Municipal Building.

give back to the community of
Haddonfield.
In the contest, we ask residents of
Haddonfield which, at the time, was
one of the only towns where we had a
newspaper to submit short essays
telling the community why a local nonprofit group deserved to receive a donation. We gathered all the nominating
essays, published them and held a community-wide vote to see who was most
deserving.
After we tallied the votes, we donated $500 to the organization that won,
and we also gave $100 to the person
who wrote that particular essay. For
us, this contest which we called The
Ray of Hope was a way for us to give
back to the community in an extremely impactful way.

Scout troop, a garden club, a senior citizens club or a book reading club
often do as much for the community as
the larger, more well-known non-profits do, but they just dont receive the
same attention, or financial backing.
Were not saying that the March of
Dimes, Red Cross or other non-profits
dont support worthy causes or are not
deserving of donations; were just saying the $500 we were donating had
more of an impact on the local town
organizations, since they operate with
a much smaller budget.
Last year, as we celebrated our com-

newspapers that we publish, we expanded on this idea by creating The
Ray of Hope Fund a part of the Community Foundation of South Jersey
to make similar micro-donations to
community organizations that have a
significant impact in the neighborhoods they serve.
Weve been collecting tax-deductible
donations over the last year, and are
still collecting them online at
http://elauw.it/rayofhopefund.
Now, were about ready to start distributing some of this money. But first,
we need your input.

Community invited to support concert

COMMUNITY
Continued from page 1
The McKeon family is part of a
large home schooling community
of families from around the tristate. Grants mother Jackie describes her son as a very outgoing
teenager who is well known in
the community.
He sees the humor in most
things, she said. Hes very perceptive. He loves to give the editorializing of things.
Grant injured his arm during a
soccer game last fall. It was originally thought to be a minor injury, and Grant began undergoing
physical therapy. However, when

his shoulder swelled during

rehab, he was sent to get an array
of tests, eventually leading to his
diagnosis.
Despite the diagnosis, Grant
has taken everything in stride the
past few months. He got lots of
motivation when he met two
other kids in the hospital who
were also battling cancer.
I actually met two people who
also were diagnosed with other
cancers, he said. They were
able to just give me advice.
Grant is driven to continuing
with treatments, which include
intense chemotherapy sessions.
Even though he is exhausted
from treatments, he always remembers to stay positive.
Your attitude controls the rest

of your body, Grant said. If

youre positive, the rest of your
body will follow through with
that. Whenever everything seems
really down, just keep your head
up.
Grants medical bills have become a financial hurdle for the
McKeon family. As a result, many
people began contacting Rosemary Laberee, a member of the
homeschooling community. She
went to social media to help organize fundraising efforts.
I created the page and invited
everyone I knew and invited them

Laberee said.

In the past three months, donations and well wishes have been
pouring in to the McKeon family.
Jackie said the family has received everything from cards to

Its very overwhelming and

would be held at Grace Presbyterian Church in Mt. Laurel. The
church is allowing the group to
use its space at no charge, allowing for all money from the event
to go toward the McKeon family.
Were going to pack that
church to the gills, she said.
Even though osteosarcoma is a
rare form of cancer, members of
the Mt. Laurel community are familiar with it. Eric Ebo Eberling was a Mt. Laurel resident
and student at Lenape High
School who was also diagnosed
with osteosarcoma at the age of
15. Eberling continued to coach
hockey and stay involved with
many activities through his treatment as the community rallied
around him. Eberling passed
away on Dec. 25, 2013, at the age of
17.

Earlier this year, the Eberling

family formed a nonprofit organization called the Ebo Strong
Foundation to raise money and
support families with pediatric
cancer. Gini Eberling, Erics
mother, was able to connect with
Grant after a chance meeting one
night at dinner.
We went out to dinner just on
a whim, and we ended up sitting
next to Grants best friends family, she said.
Eberling got in contact with
Grants father Paul to talk to him
and offer her support. In addition,
she also helped the family get in
contact with a company to make
bracelets and t-shirts in support
of Grant. Having gone through
many of the same experiences,
Eberling wanted to offer a helping hand in any way possible.
I talked back and forth with
Paul, just giving him some tips
and advice, she said.
Eberling will speak to the audience at the concert about the importance of giving back to those
when they need it most.
The amount of support the
McKeons have received from the
community is something Jackie
will never forget.
Its been very beautiful to see
how people really care, Jackie
said.
Everyone in the community is
invited to the concert to support
the McKeons. Donations will be
collected at the event. Those unable to attend the concert can
mail checks to Grace Presbyterian Church, 550 Union Mill Road,
Mt. Laurel NJ 08054.
