Melvin Hurst-Weekly Log, 3/2-3/6

1. How did you spend your time this week?

This week was spent completing our units on Agriculture for AP Human Geography,
specifically reviewing and testing most of the week, while Economics was spent
focusing on reviewing supply and demand as well illustrating those concepts through
a pricing activity. Both units wrapped up this week and we will start new units next
week.
2. What responsibilities did you have?
I reviewed with the students in Economics as well as was responsible for grading
their tests. Come Monday, I will have taken over the class fully. In Human
Geography, I continue to play more of a secondary role as I prepare for taking over
Economics. I believe I will play more of an occasional role in Human Geography
after two weeks or so of having taken over Economics.
3. What were your most satisfying experiences this week?
My most satisfying experience this week was reviewing Economics material with
students and seeing how some got it and helping those who needed more help
grasping the content. I also continue to enjoy getting to know my students and getting
to know what theyre interested in as individuals
4. What were your most challenging experiences this week?
My most challenging experience this week by far was grading the unit tests. At this
point in my teaching career, Im finding it very difficult not to second-guess myself
when it comes to grading assessments, in particular the essay portions of the tests.
5. What are the plans for the upcoming week?
In the upcoming week, I will take over fully in the three blocks of Economics
beginning Monday as we start a new unit on Money and Banking, starting with
lessons on GDP and Inflation in this shortened week.

1. How did you spend your time this week?
This week was spent continuing our unit on Development for AP Human Geography,
specifically looking at life in LDCs, while Economics was spent focusing on
completing our lesson on poverty, reviewing for the Unit 3 exam and testing.

2. What responsibilities did you have?

I continue to be bell to bell in Economics and was responsible for grading their tests
and administering their notebook checks. In Human Geography, I continue to play
more of a secondary role.
3. What were your most satisfying experiences this week?
My most satisfying experience this week was reviewing Economics material with
students and seeing how some got it and helping those who needed more help
grasping the content. I also enjoyed teaching lessons in different ways depending on
the class. In other words, adapting lessons to best fit each class needs as learners.
4. What were your most challenging experiences this week?
My most challenging experience this week was again grading the unit tests and
notebooks. Furthermore, figuring out how much I can say when students ask me
questions during a test was somewhat difficult as well as I want to help students but at
the same time they need to be able to show me what they know without much of my
help in that situation.
5. What are the plans for the upcoming week?
In the upcoming week, I will continue to go bell to bell in Economics as we start a
new unit on Money and Banking, starting with lessons on Money, Taxes, and Federal
Taxes this week. In AP Human Geography, I plan to play more of a secondary role,
but will help with the AP Exam study sessions beginning next week.

1. How did you spend your time this week?
This week was spent completing our unit on Development for AP Human Geography
culminating with the unit test on Friday. Economics was spent focusing on Federal,
State, and Local Taxes as well as Fiscal Policy and Federal Spending.
2. What responsibilities did you have?
I continue to be bell to bell in Economics and was responsible for teaching lessons on
Federal Taxes, State and Local Taxes, and Fiscal Policy this week. In Human
Geography, I continue to play more of a secondary role and will continue to do so for
the duration of student teaching.
3. What were your most satisfying experiences this week?

My most satisfying experience this week was completing the bell to bell portion of
student teaching. Going bell to bell was an amazing experience and I cant wait to be
a full-time teacher in August, but it is a relief that the semester is winding down and I
get to finish up what I need to in order to graduate and become certified.
4. What were your most challenging experiences this week?
My most challenging experience this week was once again making the material
exciting for students as taxes can be a boring topic if you let it be. In addition,
helping students understand how fiscal policy works by trying to make the content
more accessible to students was very challenging.
5. What are the plans for the upcoming week?
In the upcoming week, I will transition into an observing and assisting role in
Economics as Mr. Stevens retakes the class. I also am planning to do my external
observations and finish my portfolio in the coming weeks. In AP Human Geography, I
will continue to play more of a secondary role.
