Global Classroom Module

Pre-Planning Template

Designer: Tennille Wilkens

Summary:
I welcome the intelligent students of my 5th grade class to participate in a
collaborative iEarn project about Money Matters. This project will allow the
students of my class to exchange knowledge about money from another country. In
this lesson we will share as well as learn some important facts about the history of
money. The lesson will be adhere to DeKalb County, GA standards for technological
educational that promises to provide students with a 21 st century learning
environment.

School Background:
The students participating in this project attend Indian Creek Elementary School of
DeKalb County, GA. The years enrollment consists of more than 1,100 students;
making it one of the largest elementary schools in DeKalb County. Also, the students
speak more than 45 different languages and dialects. This school has ranked as one
of the poorest performing schools of DeKalb County, GA.

Time Frame:
I would like to have this project completed in the time of 2 - 3 weeks with most of
the lessons requiring consecutive days. Please plan accordingly. I do require for the
sake of the students that this project is conducted by the teacher only. Students will
share and gather information from each other, which will conclude the lesson with a
group project that will then be gifted to the other classroom of which this
experience was shared.

Subject and Grade Level:

Math, Writing, Social Studies & History, Grade 5

Proposed Topic and Rational:

The project that the intelligent students of my classroom will be working on is called
Money Matters. This project will help students gain an understanding of how other

countries value money, as well as the facts and history about money and
distinguish any similarities or differences as it involves money.

Key Challenges:
I am unsure of the economical background of the young students we will collaborate
with for this project. The students of Indian Creek all come from a poverty stricken
neighborhood but find love in life and not things. These students will gain an
understanding of other cultures, with the possibility of relating or not. However, I
feel that the major challenge for this project will come when students are sharing
dialogue about the value of money and what that means to their culture.

Prior Knowledge:
In preparation for this project, I would like to educate the students about the history
of the United States Dollar as well as the place of study. I will have the students
map the currency, understand demographics, and economical make up for a better
understanding of where we are studying. Use of visuals, media, and presentations of
the money matters of the country of their choice will help to prepare for the actual
lesson and the activities.
Students will already have an understanding of the uses of all technology that will
be incorporated in this lesson.

Standards and Key Concepts

Content Standards:
Write and interpret numerical expressions.
MCC5.OA.2
Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret
numerical
expressions without evaluating them.

Literacy for Social Studies, History, and Technical Subjects:

Building knowledge through reading content-rich nonfiction.

Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text.

Regular practice with complex text and its academic vocabulary.

International Society for Technology in Education:

1. Students are to be creative in presenting information using technology.
2. Locate organize and ethically use information from a variety of sources to present
information to participants.
3. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and
technology.

Global Theme:
I would relate this project to human Race and Ethnicity: Human Commonality and
Diversity. This is a great topic because students will get learn the lifestyle and
cultures of other students. This can be a huge eye opener, a great way for students
to place value on life with or without money matters. I would like for students to
understand the proverb that money does not buy happiness and happiness starts at
home. This lesson goes beyond the history of money, rather it teaches the value in
the little things that money cannot buy.
Pre-Planning Steps:
1. Find a class to collaborate with.
2. Work with the teacher to do the following:
-Communicate goals of each lesson.
-Collaborate ideas and expectations.
-Define communication structure.
-Determine Assessment methods.
3. Students:
-Have permission documented for participation as well as pictures use for
internet.
-Gather student count and determine if students will work in small or large
groups.

Technology Use:
It is important that each of the students experience this project as it involves the
use of technology. Therefore, students will need access to their own computers for
individual and group work. Use of cameras and other relevant media tools will be
needed during this project. Students will use a private online classroom web log to
document their thoughts and feelings amongst the participants.

Essential Questions:
1. Communicate the similarities and differences of their cultural background in
comparison to the participants?
2. What is the history of the USD in comparison to the Money Matters participant?
3. Describe the many ways that money can be transmitted today in comparison to
many years ago? Cash, coins, electronic card etc.
4. What does the money in your country look like in comparison to the participants?
5. Use photos to help with the written description.
Lesson One-Summary:
The first lesson students will share the history of the money from their own country.
Students will present cash receipts, coins, electronic cards, and checks as forms of
money. Share visuals to help with the description. Describe who is represented on
each of the coins and what that mean to our country.
Students will work in groups to communicate with whomever theyre paired with.
Each student is expected to complete the above activities and will be provided help
as needed. Assessment is based on the completion of the activities, how well
information is communicated verbally and written.
Lesson Two-Summary:
Students are expected to create a presentation (Screencast, power point, etc.) for
the participating students. This is a great way to reinforce what theyve learned. I
would like for the students to include how they earn their allowance, or clarify if not
any at all.
Assessment will be based on how well the thoughts are gathered for the
presentation and how well the material is presented.

Introduction: Welcome students and answer any

questions or concerns they may have. The fun
continues for this group. I would like students to

like groups of two, 1 member from the other class,
and one from our class. Students will work with
their peers. They will keep in touch through Skype,

monitored by the teacher.

Introduction:
Students are to log

Day 4

Day 4

I would like for this to be a lesson where we teach

the students about the value of money. With every
student needing a valuable lesson to appreciate the
importance of family budgeting.

Students please
review the
instructions. I really
want you to
understand and
appreciate the value
of money. As it is a
receipt but many of
our family members
work so hard to earn
their money. Poverty
is real in the world.
Sometimes we are
much more
appreciative when we
have to earn people,
places, and things.

Have students review the following slide. Example.

As they follow, explain what each of these slides
and topics are all about.
Income, revenue, family budgeting, loans, banks
etc.

After you have

gained an
understanding from
this lesson, lets talk!
I would like a hard
and soft copy of
someone in your life,
parents or other
family, that goes
above and beyond to
provide for your
family. Write a thank
you letter. Express
your appreciation and
share what you have
learned in the
presentation about
money.
Example:
Dear Mom & Dad,
Thank you for
providing a loving
home for me. I
understand you may
have work really hard
for your salary. I am
not able to get
everything I want but
you have given me
what I need. If at all

***Formative Evaluation***
Students Assessment and Evaluation:
Students will benefit greatly from the above activities. Students are able to
meet students from another country and learn so much from them. The
completion of the lessons will build team skills, engage conversations, peek
the students visual and auditory skills. I love the idea of viewing and
retelling stories. This will provide students the skill to think from both point of
views as the reader and the writer.
Watching closely and engaging students to interact, communicate, and
contribute within groups will ensure my standards are being met. I plan to
provide feedback for each student and use the rubric to evaluate as well. Use
both rubrics to help evaluate the students.
Use for group assignments:

Use for the written portion:

Ask the students for feedback:

1. Did you enjoy the project?
2. Would you like to participate again?
3. Did you find the group portion helpful?
4. What should we consider the next time?
Thank you so much for participating!
