Rotary Club of Holy Spirit Club No. 69935 RI District 3780 Philippines

Vol. VII No. 34

Holy Spirit transmits Global Grant #1529934 documents

for $55,650 project to upgrade Human Milk Bank operation of Philippine Childrens Medical Center.
When the authorizations from DG of Primary
International Sponsor District 3710 Korea and
DG of our own District 3780, the MOUs with
beneficiary institution and partner Korean club,
and the supply offer had all been electronically
received by the end of Day I of the DISCON on
April 17th, BCP Marites Nepomuceno formally
transmitted the documents to The Rotary Foundation headquarters in Chicago, from the historic Manila Hotel.
The Holy Spirit team at the DISCON invited
PDG Dulce Coyukiat, Chair of the District The
Rotary Foundation Committee, to witness the
formal submission of the GG documents to
TRF. Gov Dulce had approved the project earlier. This is a milestone event in the life of RC
Holy Spirit, being only the second of 100 Rotary clubs in D3780 to have prepared a Global
Grant project and secured the support of a Rotary District as Primary International Sponsor.
RC Holy Spirit would have obtained TRF support last Rotary year for a Global Grant project

in Payatas QC that had already obtained DDF

authorizations from a Primary International
Sponsor and D3780. RCHS decided at the last
minute to put the project on hold due to unresolved issues pertaining to property rights that
we believed threatened project sustainability.

Rotary District 3780 celebrates remarkable accomplishments during the years culminating event - the 2015 District Conference
The lackluster attendance at the plenary sessions and other
activities did not hinder the successful holding of DISCON 2015
at the historic Manila Hotel last April 17-18, 2015. The first plenary session was opened after a wonderful rendition of Philippine dance and song numbers. This was followed by the singing of the national anthems of Denmark and the Philippines by
the RC New Manila East Choir, an equally superb performance
by Rotarians.
Keynote speaker was former President Fidel V Ramos whose
talk on leadership kept the audience alive because of his wit and
humor. He even took off his barong Tagalog which was later
auctioned off and sold at P10,500.00 to be donated to the PNPSAF 44 Families.
The State of the District Address by DG Sammy Pagdilao was
rife with better-than-target performance results, ending with a
declaration that this year is the best Rotary year ever.
For his part, RI Director Per Hoyen, who served as the RI President's Representative for the event, stated that this is the best
District Conference I have ever attended.
Other speakers included RI Director Guiller Tumangan, former
Secretary Rafael Alunan, and Admiral Alexander Pama.
The DISCON was also graced by RI District 3800 Governor

PP Chito Borromeo was confirmed DGND by the District Nomination Committee to serve as district governor in 2017-18. No
other candidates had been nominated during the designated
time period before DISCON. Congratulations, PP Chito.
RC Holy Spirit was represented in the Discon by Pres Marites
Nepomuceno, PE Angel Castro, IPP Dr Eui Bong Jung and PP
Marcia Salvador. Also in attendance during the second plenary
session were Holy Spirit Rotaract President Harold Kim Maggay, PN Lovely Rose Paalisbo and Service Chair Jayson Monte
de Ramos who, together with other Rotaractors, listened as
DRR Sharlyn Que delivered her State of the District Rotaract
Address.
The two-day DISCON ended with grandeur during the event's
Governor's Ball at the Manila Hotel.
DG Sammy Pagdilao expressed his gratitude to all Rotarians in
the district, especially to the Best Class Presidents, for their support to his leadership this Rotary Year 2014-15
In the second part of the program, the district's next leader, District Governor-Elect Rey David, and his family were introduced.
DISCON 2015 was ably hosted by RC New Manila East and
chaired by SP Ed Ayento.

Rotary Information - APRIL MESSAGES FROM ROTARY LEADERS

RI Presidents April 2015 Message

Today, there are so many more ways to
communicate than ever before. In the age of
video conferences and instant messages, we
can work together from almost anywhere,
and always be in touch; we can share our
Rotary work on Facebook, on Twitter, and on
Rotary.org. But there will always be a tremendously important role for the magazine
that you are holding in your hands or reading on an electronic device right now.
The Rotarian is one of the oldest continuously published magazines in the world, with an unbroken publication history dating
back to its first issue, featuring Paul Harris as a contributor, in
1911. Back then, the magazine was printed in black and white,
and was only a few pages. The type was small, the pictures
were few, and the advertisements were for piano dealers, haberdashers, and a hotel fully equipped with hot and cold running
water!
Now, you can read The Rotarian on your phone or tablet, and
regional magazines are published in 24 languages. Seventeen
Nobel Prize winners and 19 Pulitzer Prize winners have written
for the magazine, including Mahatma Gandhi, Desmond Tutu,
George Bernard Shaw, and Nicholas Murray Butler. Every
month, The Rotarian brings us a snapshot of the best of the Rotary world: It engages, entertains, enlightens, and inspires.
In an age of constant communication, with so many ways to find
new information, do we still need a Rotary magazine? Absolutely. Because the magazine is now, as it has always been, one
of the best ways to spread the word about Rotary. It has allowed
me to share the fun and excitement of Rotary Days, it showcases the good work of Rotarians around the world, and it puts a
spotlight on important issues affecting us all. The Rotarian isn't
just enjoyable for Rotarians it's a great way to boost Rotary's
public image, and show the world the work that Rotarians do.
So when you're done reading this issue, pass it along. Ask yourself who might be particularly interested in this month's articles.
Give the issue to a friend, a co-worker, or a colleague. Share it
with someone you've invited to a Rotary club meeting. Visit
www.therotarianmagazine.com to share stories on social media,
or send links through email. Use it to Light Up Rotary just as
Rotarians have been doing for more than 100 years.

President 2014-15
Rotary International

Foundation Chairmans April 2015 Message

When the new grant model for The Rotary
Foundation was introduced under the Future Vision Plan, the Trustees decided that
it should be reviewed in the 2015-16 Rotary
year so that your experiences could help
make our processes as effective as possible.
The Trustees recognize that grants involve
many participants who may have different
expectations, so I have appointed an independent committee of four past RI presidents to ensure that all
views will be considered, and to ensure confidentiality to anyone who may want it.
The committee would like to hear about your experiences with
the areas of focus and district and global grants, and to seek
your ideas for any improvements that could make our Rotary
Foundation the best possible. It comprises myself and Past RI
Presidents Kalyan Banerjee, Ray Klinginsmith, and Bill Boyd,
who will serve as chair. We welcome your suggestions, which
you can email to futurevisionbillboyd@outlook.com.
We will read and analyze your ideas and meet at the Rotary
International Convention in So Paulo, Brazil, to decide on any
items that should be given to the Trustees Programs Committee. That committee will undertake the necessary surveys to
ensure we are reflecting the opinions of every Rotary member,
and will report back to us at the January 2016 International Assembly. We intend to make our recommendations at the April
2016 meeting of the Trustees.
We seek your support to ensure that our Rotary Foundation
continues to do good in the world in the best possible way.

John Kenny

Rotary Information: ON 12 APRIL 2015, THE POLIO VACCINE

CELEBRATES 60th ANNIVERSARY
Sunday, 12 April, marks 60 years since the Salk polio vaccine was declared safe, effective, and potent.
In that time, the number of polio cases has dropped
by 99 percent worldwide. With just three countries
remaining polio-endemic, we are closer than ever to
eradicating this crippling disease.
Jonas Salks inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) has
been crucial in helping us reach our goal of a poliofree world. Before the vaccine was widely available,
in the United States alone, polio crippled more than
35,000 people each year. By 1957 -- two years after
the introduction of Salks vaccine -- cases in the
U.S. had fallen by almost 90 percent, and by 1979,
polio had been eradicated there.
The impact on the rest of the world has taken
longer. In 1988, when Rotary International launched
the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) with its
partners at the World Health Organization, UNICEF,
and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, polio continued to cripple children in 125
countries. Today, polio remains endemic in only
three: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. And it has
been more than eight months since Nigerias last
case, making a polio-free Africa a real possibility.

As more than 120 countries in the world are introducing IPV, we are beginning the last chapter on polio eradication, said Olivier Charmeil, Sanofi Pasteurs chief executive officer. At Sanofi Pasteur, we
have had a long-term vision of IPV as the ultimate
public health tool able to finish the job started with
Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).
Give to end polio
Watch "Only Three Countries Left with Polio"
Read stories from polio survivors

Salks vaccine will play an important role in the endgame strategy against polio when 120 countries introduce IPV into their routine polio immunization
systems this year. Leading that effort are the GPEI
partners and Gavi, a global vaccine alliance, along
with Sanofi Pasteur, the largest manufacturer of polio vaccine.

Principles that Guide Rotary

The Object of Rotary

The Four-Way Test

First formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and

foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

Of the things we think, say or do

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,
and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

ROTARIANS PLEDGE
I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold the TRUTH.
I am a Rotarian
I will always strive to be FAIR
in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.

5 Avenues of Service
Based on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotarys philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the

effective functioning of the club.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their
vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

I am a Rotarian
I will always endeavor to build
GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING
in my community,
among my countrymen
and people of all nations.

International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotarys

humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding & peace.

I am a Rotarian
I will always seek to promote
the greatest good
for the greatest number of people
in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth

and young adults through leadership development activities, service
projects, and exchange programs.

I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold
the Rotary International Motto,

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Rotary Code of Conduct

As a Rotarian, I will
1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities
2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary
3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others
4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings
5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society
6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community
7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians
8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship
