THE STORY: The action is set in Truvy's beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies
who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not
sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and
free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I'm not crazy, I've just been in a bad mood for forty
years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader,
M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a "good ole boy." Filled
with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves
toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strengthand lovewhich give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly
touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS TO OPEN ON MAY 15

"There is no such thing as natural beauty" is a line from Steel Magnolias, but also a mantra
that most females believe in as seen in our regular trips to our favorite stylist. Most ladies
will relate to the friendships of the six women of who frequent Truvy's Beauty Salon and that
fact that they are an important factor in each other's lives. Steel Magnolias impacts us with
wonderful characters....lots of laughs.....and plenty of tears and tragedy. However, the true
message of the play is that we survive the hardships and heartbreaks of life through the love
and strength of our friends.
I am honored to be directing six extremely talented women who are working very hard to
bring " Steel Magnolias" to the Playmaker stage. You'll see Playmaker veterans....as well as
new faces
Steel Magnolias will feature....in order of appearance...........
Mary Jo Foos.................Truvy
Latisha Fields..............Annelle
Pam Shirtz...................Shelby
Terri Jones...................Clairee
Brenda Hensley............M'Lynn
Sylvia Chappell .......... Ouiser
Asst. Director, Angela Fishburn, and I have been busy with actresses and techies as we
strive to prepare this play for opening.
My talented sister, Anita Hanes, accepted the challenge of transforming the "Don't Hug Me"
set into Truvy's Beauty Parlor. The result is delightful!
Assisting Anita has been Dale Jensen, Steve Heineman and Dennis Gordon.
Wendy Holder has been helping with set pieces and props, and will also be offering her
expertise as hairdresser throughout the show.
Lisa and Samantha Meyer will be responsible for lights and sound. We know this mother/
daughter duo are unstoppable.
Bonnie Segaard is lining-up our ushers and raffle ticket sellers. Monica Heineman is busy
keeping the theatre clean....as she always does.
Brenda MacDonald will do her usual efficient job of co-ordinating the program and box
office.
Reservation line opens on Thursday, May 7. Pick your date: May 15, 16, 21,22,23 at 8:00pm
and Sunday May 17, at 2:00pm.
Hope to see you at the theatre!

Playmakers Proposes Our 69th Season

A Season of Heart-warming & Hilarious Happenings!
Book by Anthony Drewe Music by George Stiles Lyrics by Anthony Drewe
Based on Hans Christian Andersons The Ugly Duckling
HONK is a large cast family musical for adults and children, played by adults and
children, with wonderful music and a story that relates to our time and says
Its okay to be different.

Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters.
The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite
his mother's protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about himself, the little
fowl finds himself on adventure of self discovery all the while unknowingly
outwitting a very hungry Cat. Along the way Ugly meets a whole flock of
unique characters and finds out being different is not a bad thing to be.

By Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom

Based on the book by Mitch Albom
Tuesdays with Morrie is the driven solely by his career, and Morrie
Schwartz, his former college professor. Sixteen years after graduation, Mitch
happens to catch Morrie's appearance on a television news program and learns
that his old professor is battling Lou Gehrig's Disease. Mitch is reunited with
Morrie, and what starts as a simple visit turns into a weekly pilgrimage and a
last class in the meaning of life.

By Frances Goodrich & Albert Hackett

Newly Adapted by Wendy Kesselman
In this transcendently powerful new adaptation by Wendy Kesselman, Anne
Frank merges from history a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl, who
confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with
astonishing honest, wit, and determination. An impassioned drama about the
lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, The
Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief.

Faith County

By Mark Landon Smith

Faith County is the prequel to Faith County II: An Evening of Culture
by
Playmakers in January, 2009. You will recognize those charming characters
from The Mineola Cultural Society who gave an unforgettable performance
of Romeo and Juliet.
Somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the south, there's a place where the
bee-hive hairdo is still the rage and Saturday nights are reserved for the tractor
pull in nearby Pickler. A colorful collection of good ole' country folk gather
'round for this year's county fair, and there's stiff competition in the arts and
crafts category.
