Furniture Design Award (FDA) 2016

TERMS & CONDITIONS


Entry Requirements

Open to local (Singapore) and international participation.

Participation is on individual basis only.

Entries must be original works of the entrant, who will be recognised as the sole
designer of the said entries throughout the course of the competition.

Entries that infringe, breach, prejudice or violate the property, interests or rights
(including but not limited to contractual rights, user rights, copyright, design rights and
all other proprietary and intellectual property rights) of any third party will be
disqualified. Participants shall be liable for claims by such third parties resulting from the
infringement. The Organiser shall not be held responsible for any infringement.
Submission Requirements

Detailed concept of the design with photographs or visualised sketches and


renderings, including brief descriptive annotations and approximate dimensions, must
be presented on A4 size in Adobe PDF format (max file size of 5mb). A maximum of two
pages per entry may be submitted. Do not include any name or form(s) of
identification on the page(s).

Write-up of a maximum of 150 words, that should include concept, inspiration,


innovations, design aspects, primary function, materials used and any additional
features of the product(s).

Each participant is allowed to submit a maximum of 3 entries per sign up.


Judging Criteria

Degree of Innovation
o Is the design concept new?
o How did the new design come about and what is the design process?
o Is there innovative use of technology (including materials, construction and
business models)?

Marketability
o What is the potential of the product for commercialisation?
o Does it appeal to the market that it was designed for?

Functionality
o Does the concept fulfill all requirements of handling, usability, safety and
product feasibility?
o Does it fulfill a need or function?
o Is it practical in terms of its size, weight and storage?

Environmental
o What are the choice of material and the source of it?
o Is there efficient use of material resulting in low wastage?
o Is the process of manufacturing and production methods environmentally
friendly?
o Is the furniture ready-to-assemble, knockdown or flat-pack friendly?

Round 1: Preliminary Judging (20 31 August 2015)


24 entries will be shortlisted in the Preliminary Judging by a judging panel that consists of
reputable figures in the design scene. Shortlisted participants will be notified on the end of the
1st week of September 2015.
Round 2: Judging Interview (8 October 2015)
Short-listed semi-finalists will be required to produce scaled models of their designs and present
them together with concepts and prototyping processes to the judging panel during the
interview. During this session, 12 out of 24 finalists will be selected. Shortlisted participants will be
notified on the end of the 2nd week of October 2015.
Round 3: Final Judging (Mid-March 2016)
Finalists will have to produce prototypes of their designs, to be in time for the FDA finalist
showcase at SingaPlural 2016, held in conjunction with the International Furniture Fair Singapore
(IFFS) 2016 / 33rd ASEAN Furniture Show (AFS), The Dcor Show and Hospitality 360. Prototypes
are to be shipped to Singapore prior to commencement of SingaPlural 2016 in March. Logistics
costs to be undertaken by finalists.

Finalists will make their way to Singapore and will present their design concepts and answer
questions in person, posed to them by the panel of judges. From this session, FDA winners will be
determined, as described in the following section. Trip arrangements and costs to be fully
undertaken by finalists.
Prizes
FDA Grand Award
SGD20, 000 Cash + Certificate & Trophy + 12sqm exhibition booth in IFFS/AFS 2017
All other finalists will be given a certificate of participation.
Other Information

SFIC reserves the right to publicise any submitted entry without prior notice.

Finalists prototypes will be displayed at the discretion of SFIC for a period of one year
after IFFS/AFS 2016.

Notifications will be given to finalists for collection of prototypes. Logistics costs to be


undertaken by finalists. SFIC reserves the right to dispose the prototypes, if they are not
collected within 2 weeks of notification.

SFIC assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage to the prototypes.

Participants are required to make personal arrangements for their travels and deliver
their prototypes to the judging venue.

SFIC reserves the right to make any changes to the Award without prior notice.

The judges decision is final. No correspondence will be entertained.


Participation Fee / Mode of Payment
A non-refundable participation fee of SGD50.00 for local and locally-based (Singapore)
designers, and USD60.00 for international designers, are applicable respectively. The
participation fee is applicable to individual participant and is inclusive of 7% GST where
applicable.

Submission Deadline
All submissions must be completed by 1200hr (SGT) on 10 August 2015.

By participating in the Furniture Design Award (FDA), you will be requested to accept the award
guideline.
Furniture Design Award (FDA) guideline:
Projects participating in selection for the Furniture Design Award (FDA) must be original works.
Projects must be free from copyrights and any kind of obligation. The design shall not in any
way infringe any third partys right, including but not limited to copyright, logos, trademark,
trade names, or other proprietary rights of publicity or privacy.
Participants must ensure that images, people, places, monuments used for artworks in relation
with the award entry are either free of rights or owned by participants. Only entries with a
declaration of authorship are accepted.
By submitting your design you are asked to attach the declaration.
Intellectual property rights
Any moral and paternity right regarding the project sent in for submission is the designers
property. However, by submitting a design for selection for the Furniture Design Award (FDA),
all participants agree to provide Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), the organiser for
the Furniture Design Award (FDA) and SingaPlural, and International Furniture Fair Singapore
(IFFS) Pte Ltd, the organiser for the International Furniture Fair Singapore/ASEAN Furniture Show,
The Dcor Show and Hospitality 360 with the right to publish and exhibit all the designs
(including project data submitted) sine die (without time limitations) and waiving
compensation at exhibitions and events and/or to use them in any publications or
communications that the organisers may deem suitable and/or necessary.
In any case, each time the creation is used, they must refer to the creators they originate from.
SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd will credit the designer's name to properly attribute authorship of works to
promote the author adequately. SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd will have the right to apply minor
change and/or amendments without damaging the integrity of the artwork (i.e. add the SFIC,
SingaPlural and International Furniture Fair Singapore/ASEAN Furniture Show, The Dcor Show
and The Hospitality Show logo and text, reframing, translation, changing colors, cutting the
background or parts of it, etc).
In case SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd want to bring major changes to the submitted artwork for
publication, SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd will contact the designer and inform him/her about the use to
obtain the designer's consent.
SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd are also authorised to create models and/or prototypes of the artwork
waiving compensation and to exhibit them at exhibitions and events and/or to use them in
any publications or communications that the organisers may deem suitable and/or necessary.
In any case, each time the models and/or prototypes are used, SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd must refer
to the creators they originate from and will credit the designer's name to properly attribute
authorship of works to promote the author adequately.
Authorship declaration
Herewith, I declare that the design is my own creation and has been developed in conformity
with the Furniture Design Award (FDA) guideline:
Projects participating to the competition must be original works. Projects must be free from
copyrights and any kind of obligation. The design shall not in any way infringe any third partys
right, including but not limited to copyright, logos, trademark, trade names, or other proprietary
rights of publicity or privacy.
I herewith also ensure SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd that all images of people, places, monuments, etc
used for my artworks in relation with the award entry are either free of rights or owned by myself.
I have been informed and invited to refrain from submitting works that infringe the intellectual
property rights or right to confidentiality of a third party.
In any case a third party claims infringement of rights or demands compensation for damage
etc. with regard to my submitted work(s) that violate the Furniture Design Award (FDA)
guideline, SFIC and IFFS Pte Ltd shall assume no responsibility whatsoever.
