WHATS THE ALPHA GIRL

HUB?
In May 2015, Handz and Mindz Ltd. will be
launching a self esteem and leadership
class for 11- 17 year old girls. The classes
are designed as a monthly experience using its Teem Up curriculum. A rich curriculum that uses skill building conversations
and fun activities to integrate self esteem,
self control, self respect, self belief, discipline, discovery and originality, problem
solving and creativity amongst others.

WHAT
GROUP
BELONG?

DOES

YOUR

DAUGHTER

At the inception of adolescence, girls in particular are exposed to several

myths and pressures. The media suggest to girls all kinds of things from what
beauty is, who is attractive, what the fashion trends are etc. In turn, the children take this impressions they pick across media platforms into their school
spaces. In return they bully each other, they put unnecessary pressures on
each other.

Research has shown that one in five girls feel too insecure about their looks
and so they hold back from asking or answering questions in class.
Every school, community etc. has at least three groups of girls. I call them:
The Reds
The Cream
The Purple
The Reds absorb everything they pick from any media platform. From
fashion, to language to perspective, the Reds internalize the entire media experience and transform to suit prevalent culture. They are considered deviant.

They are the most likely to get into sex, drugs and other vices. They are the
least likely to get and keep a pregnancy. They have a lot of
experience
with that. Sadly, they create the pressure on the rest to belong to something
they consider the yardstick of hip.
These girls have no personal values of their own and take upon themselves the
most resounding views in their space. These girls need help. They are usually
not as strong as they appear to be.
The Cream like I call them, have no strong colour of their own. Depending on
the space and the quality of the pressure, they can take upon themselves the
Reds or the Purple personality. You see the cream for more of the times, indulge and accept the propaganda of the Reds. They think the Reds are cool
and the boys want them and they usually believe that is the teen priority validation. First they begin to see themselves as ugly, undesirable and unattractive. This group is the volatile group. They usually grow up to believe that its a
privilege to be asked out. So they are not likely to say no to a boys attention
because the asking out is a validation. So they usually
expose themselves to all kinds of risk. So the girl in this narrative can eventually get pregnant
and take up very unhealthy life styles.
The Purples a unique blend of girls. Depending on the number, they can
squash the Reds perspective. Sadly, they are usually fewer. The Purples
believe there is a time and place for everything. They brag about boys being
afraid of them. They have rock solid certainty of choices they would never
make. But some of them still struggle with body confidence. Infact, its the
shame of the body a lot of times that makes them disinterested in the boys.
Some of them are bothered whether or not any boy will even in the future be
interested in them. They have crushes on boys but they have mastered how to
hide it which is most successful when they are in a power packed group of
friends.
No matter the group, every teen girl out there is desperate about finding the
right answers. Even the Reds. Perhaps, especially the Reds. They may be uncomfortable about seeking adult counsel openly but in the right atmosphere
they want to break out of the compulsion of being cool according to peer
standards. The cream wants answers too. The Purple needs reaffirmation that
they are beautiful, making awesome progress and learn how to stay on it.

THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM

1.

2.

3.

When teens approach puberty, body changes begin to happen. They

know they are transforming but they do not know how its going to turn out
to be. Will they be as beautiful as the celebrities they watch and listen to?
Will their tummy be flat? Will they have figure 8? Will they be desirable to
boys?
From late childhood to the on set of puberty, words mean more than they
used to be. They are particular sensitive to social acceptability at home,
church, mosque, school spaces etc..
Some of our teen girls are already being exposed to adult content. Someone has touched them inappropriately and told them a lie. Some have
been molested but will never speak up. The shame of what they have
done, the seeming pleasure they have derived beclouds their judgment
on the long term impact of their choices.

HOW THE ALPHA GIRLS HUB WILL MAKE A

DIFFERENCE.
The Alpha Girl hub uses a carefully designed curriculum that engages and empowers girls in the following ways:
1.
Help girls to see themselves from a holistic view. Accepting who she is as a
sum total of her talents, skills, appearance, goals, vision and passion. Using
this approach girls are able to identify and celebrate their uniqueness, one
from another.
2.
Help girls see, appreciate and engage the truth within every information
they hear. We start by exposing them to quality information on issues as
they come, a love for reading and learning and credible places to search
out information before making a decision.
3.
Building a formidable accountability network where adults in partnership
with the stronger purples can help the Reds and Cream redefine who they
are.
4.
Helping the girls develop their personal friendship codes that define who
and how they explore friendships.

5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.

Using several structures, the girl will learn how to set growth goals and work
to achieve them.
We will work with them to build rock solid visions of their future and see how
to navigate their way to the top.
Using strategic tools, the girls will build sound character and the resilience
to become all they are designed to be.
We will work with them to clearly define the appropriate kind, place and
time for boys.
We will work with them to confront, engage and demystify peer pressure.
Develop a code that helps girls deal with manipulation that comes from
media culture, societal expectations etc..
Provide information on a consistent basis on health and hygiene for girls.

YES, WE WILL ENGAGE WITH PARENTS

After every class, parents will get updates on the contents and scope of class as
well as their next steps at home. Periodically, we will convene with parents to talk
about reinforcing whats going on at the hub.

HOW THE PROGRAM WILL WORK.

The monthly interface is like a dash board where we pick on issues, discuss elaborately but provide monthly growth opportunities for the girls with daily, weekly
and navigational milestones.

IS THIS A FAITH BASED PROGRAM?

The Alpha Girl Hub is open to children of all faith inclinations.
