Pentecost Sunday

John 15:26-27; 16:12-15

"'Rivers of living water will flow
from within him who believes in me.'
He said this in reference to the
Spirit." Rivers of living water. What
does this image make us think of?
Something active. Something
dynamic and changing, yet constant
and dependable. A river with living
water is not stagnant; it is not silent,
but rather it speaks.

Rev. Devdas Masillamony, Pastor

Rev. John Bosco Musinguzi, In Residence
MASS SCHEDULE: Sunday Vigil: 4:30 pm (Saturday); Sunday: 8:00
am and 11:00 am. Liturgy of the Word for Children dismisses during

Those who believe in Jesus will be

like this river. Through the Spirit of
Christ, which first came upon
Christian believers at Pentecost and
which came upon us at our baptism,
we become a source of "living
water." This isn't automatic, however.
We must cooperate with the Spirit
that has been given to us. As St. Paul
wrote in his second letter to Timothy,
we need to "stir into flame the gift of
God" (1:6). The flame may be there,
but if we don't fan it through prayer,
virtuous living, spiritual formation,
and frequent reception of the
sacraments, then it will never burst
forth with the full power that it could
have. But let us take heart! Even this
process of "fanning" is made easier
when we call upon the Holy Spirit to
help us. For St. Paul reminds us today
that "the Spirit too comes to the aid of
our weakness."

PENTECOST SUNDAY

PAGE TWO

We now begin the most important aspect of the liturgy,

the consecration of bread
and wine into the Body and
blood of Jesus. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church (CCC) says that as soon as the Institution
Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine. That is why the Church
directs the faithful to kneel for this part of the Eucharistic Prayer. The priest extends his hands over
the gifts, and together with the community, says
the prayer, giving thanks and praise, and calling
upon the Holy Spirit to change our gifts of bread
and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. The
Catechism of the Catholic Church says, In the
most blessed sacrament of the Eucharist the body
and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of
our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore, the whole
Christ is truly, really, and substantially contained.
This is a key doctrine of our faith and a teaching
that sets Catholics apart from most other Christians.
The priest continues to pray the Eucharistic prayer recalling the events of the Last Supper - the institution of the Eucharist. The priest then holds
the consecrated bread in his hands and same with
the wine and elevates them to the congregation. At
this important moment in the prayer, we proclaim
the mystery of faith. There are several texts available; and the congregation follows the priest or the
choir to respond.

MAY

24TH, 2015

In the next part of the Eucharistic prayer we pray

for unity, we pray for the Church, the Pope, our
bishop (or bishops when there is more than one
bishop in the diocese). We pray for the living and
the dead, and also for ourselves that through the
intercession of Mary and Joseph, and all the saints
that we may one day joyfully arrive at that table of
the Lord in heaven, of which the table on the altar
is only a reminder. We look forward to that glorious day and raise our voices with those of all the
saints who have gone before us as the priest raises
the consecrated bread and wine in prayer. This is
known as the doxology: a prayer of glory to God
in the name of Christ and the priest prays,
Through him and with him to which the congregation responds, Amen. Our Amen to this
prayer acclaims our assent and participation in the
entire Eucharistic Prayer.
When we pray the Eucharistic prayer, the Church
invites us to become the Body and Blood of Christ.
The question for us is at what point do we become
the Body and Blood of Christ, broken and shared?
The bread and wine is not consecrated for its own
sake, after all, but for the good of the church and
for the world. This question is worth thinking
over. Maybe knowing the answer to "when" the
bread and wine are transformed will lead to the
more critical and personal question as to "why" the
Lord comes to us in Holy Communion?

ANDREW RODRIGUEZ & REEM SALEM

MAY 1ST, 2015
DOUGLAS CLARK & SHEILA SEMAAN
MAY 9TH, 2015
God our Father, we give you thanks for the
gift of marriage: the bond of life and love,
And the font of the family.
The love of husband and wife
enriches your Church with children,
fills the world with a multitude of
spiritual fruitfulness and service,
and is the sign of the love of your Son,
Jesus Christ, for his Church.
The grace of Jesus flowed forth at Cana at the
request of the Blessed Mother. May your Son,
through the intercession of Mary, pour out upon
us a new measure of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit as
we join with all people of good will to promote and
protect the unique beauty of marriage.
May your Holy Spirit enlighten our society to
treasure the heroic love of husband and wife,
and guide our leaders to sustain
and protect the singular place of
mothers and fathers in the lives of their children.
Father, we ask that our prayers be joined to
those of the Virgin Mary, that your Word may
transform our service so as to safeguard the
incomparable splendor of marriage.
We ask all these things through Christ our Lord,
Amen.

Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us.

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests; For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,
