Subject Code: ME 2251

Subject Name: Heat and Mass Transfer

COURSE OBJECTIVES

I
II

To provide fundamental instruction in various modes of heat transfer through different

media.
To apply the basic principles of heat and mass transfer in the analysis and design of
thermal engineering systems.

III

To provide the knowledge of how to formulate and methods to solve one and two
dimensional conduction heat transfer problems.

IV

To determine steady state and transient temperature distribution in various solid geometries
of practical importance
To provide the fundamentals of relationship between fluid flow, convection heat transfer and
mass transfer.

V
VI

Methods to analyze and formulate convection heat transfer problems for laminar and
turbulent flows in internal and external configurations, including the basics of the boundary
layer concept.

VII

How to apply empirical correlations for both forced and free convection, to determine values
for the convection heat transfer coefficient. They will then calculate heat transfer rates using
the coefficients.

VIII
IX

To provide the basic concepts of radiation heat transfer to include both black body radiation
and gray body radiation , methods to evaluate radiation view factors using tables and the
view factor relationships
Methods to design and solve problems related to, heat exchangers on a thermal basis

Methods to evaluate radiation view factors using tables and the view factor relationships.

XI

To impart knowledge on how certain substances undergoes the change in composition,

change in phases and exhibit the properties according to the changed environment.

XII

To develop a sound knowledge in Mass Transfer operation and apply the mass transfer
fundamentals to calculate rates of mass transfer for practical situations
