presentation of a message or viewpoint is not all that is there in
communication. Of course, it is important, but equally important is how
you adjust according to the personality of the listeners to carry across
your point of view.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
It is a process where one person sends a message to another person. It is a process for sending
and receiving messages. We share ideas thoughts & feelings through this process.
Interpersonal communication is humanitys most important characteristic and its greatest
accomplishment. It is humans ability to turn meaningless words into spoken and written words,
through which they are able to make known their needs, wants, ideas and feelings.
Interpersonal Communication defines How to create different things by interacting with each
other in society. It is person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal
or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures
and postures.

DISTINGUISH INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION AND EFFECTIVE

COMMUNICATION
Interpersonal Communication is a two way process where the speaker says something and the
listener receives something. However, effective communication ensures that the recipient gets
just the message that the sender intends to give and then respond to it.

Interpersonal Communication is a complex process that can be described in simplified terms by a

Sender and a Receiver who exchange messages containing ideas and feelings, mixed together.
Effective communication is a concept that emphasizes the importance of the fact that our
productivity and efficiency increases when we listen to a message and respond to it after
understanding it in the manner it was intended to by the sender. Effective communication
requires you to also understand the emotion behind the information.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
The Communicator, speaker or sender is a person who is sending the message. There are two
factors that will determine how effective the communicator will be:
1-The first factor is communicator attitude. It must be positive.
2-The second factor is the communicator selection of meaningful symbols.
Message
A message is a main component of interpersonal communication in which the information is
given by sender to the receiver in a written, or in speech form.
Coding
Give information when you express something in front of others and he is receiving and
understanding it.
Channel
The channel is the medium through which the message is send by sender to receiver.
Channels are the media through which messages pass and which act as a bridge between source
and receiver.
Receiver
The receiver is simply the person who receives the information from sender through ear and
brain actively.
Decoding
The receiver of the message processes the information into understanding, called decoding.
Feedback
Feedback is the reaction or simply the response given by receiver to sender.

1. We cannot be human alone. We live in a world filled with other people.
2. We need each other for security, comfort, friendship and love. It is important in maintaining

4. We need each other to achieve our goals and objectives.
5. Interpersonal communication is very helpful in work place where we need to interact with
different types of people.
6. Interpersonal communication skills are also known as life skills.

Build relationships

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Interpersonal Communication is the lifeblood of every relationship. Good relations are acquired
by open, clear and sensitive communication.

TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

1- Verbal
2- Non-verbal

VERBAL
Verbal communication consists of the spoken, as well as the written word. You can effectively
express your message, the dictionary meaning of a word, and the feelings associated with a word.
Choosing exactly the right word increases the chances of your listener understanding the
message you want to send.
For Example; whenever you conduct a meeting, have a conversation over the phone, talk to a
friend, or any other form of conversation that you perform with others using words is known as
verbal communication.
Features in Verbal Communication
You can modify or correct yourself.
Avoid Generalization, It specific.
Topic Liberty is there.

NON-VERBAL
The communication without words is known as Non-verbal communication. Often they express
feelings more clearly than the spoken or written language.
Interpersonal communication not only involves the explicit meaning of words, but also refers to
implicit messages, which may be expressed through non-verbal behaviors.
1. Non-verbal communications include:
Facial expressions
Tone and pitch of the voice
Kinesis: It is the study of communication through body language.
Proxemes: It is the study of communication through use of personal space and distance. It
is manipulation of social distance and territory.
Para Language: It is the study of communication through manipulation of sound that or
vocal but not verbal.
Features in Verbal Communication
Use of pictures and symbols.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

BARRIERS TO INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Psychological Barriers
Psychological barriers may include shyness or embarrassment. Sometimes, a person may present
herself as being abrupt difficult when she may actually be nervous. One person's stereotyped
views of the other party or the group he belongs to May also provide a barrier to communication.
If she is already prejudiced before meeting him, this will cause a barrier.
Cultural Barriers
Acceptable styles of communication vary between cultures. In some societies physical gestures
are extravagant, and touch is more acceptable. In these societies, it is generally acceptable to hug
and touch a person's arm when you are speaking to him. In other societies this would be
unacceptable. Some religions have a taboo about members of the opposite sex communicating
and particularly touching. Casual hugging and kissing would be completely unacceptable.
Language Barriers
A communication barrier may be present because the parties do not share a common language.
Interpreters and translators may be used to good effect in these circumstances. If a person is deaf
or visually impaired, this presents an obvious barrier that needs to be addressed prior to the
meeting. Speech impediments or dysphasia as a result of a stroke or other brain problem can
present a barrier. The use of jargon and over-complicated language creates barriers to
communication.
Environmental Barriers
Environmental barriers to communication can include noise and lack of privacy. An environment
which is too hot or cold will not be conducive to effective communication. Some places of
business are busy with many distractions, such as constantly ringing telephones and other
messaging systems.

HOW TO OVERCOME BARRIERS TO INTERPERSONAL

COMMUNICATION

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
1-Select the right channel
Many communication channels exist, although they are not all appropriate to use. For example,
saying "Good morning" through an e-mail is much less personable than saying it face-to-face.
2-Use the right language when sending messages
Receiving audiences may have different backgrounds. Using the right tone and words can help
avoid sending a technical message to an audience unfamiliar with technical terms.
3-Engage in active listening
Rather than focusing on how to reply to the person when listening or reading a message,
effective communicators will actively listen first and then formulate their response.
4-Avoid confusing nonverbal communication
Nonverbal communication includes your physical reactions when sending or receiving a
message. Other parties may be confused when nonverbal language suggests the sender or listener
does not care about the message.
5-Seek feedback
Feedback allows for the clarification of messages as needed. This also helps improve future
communication because senders will know which barriers exist with certain receivers.

VARIABLES AFFECTING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Variables affect the interpersonal communication

are as following:
1. Self-disclosure
2. Feedback
3. Nonverbal behaviour
4. Interpersonal attraction.

Self-disclosure: In it others know what we are thinking, how we are feeling and what we care
about. It helps reduce anxiety, increase comfort, and intensify interpersonal attractions.
Feedback: It is the response of a receiver that reaches back the sender. It involves asking
questions and responding through feeling.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
Nonverbal behaviour: It plays an important role in interpersonal communication. A smile, a
handshake can achieve much more than words in certain situations. Eye contacts, gestures,
posture, facial expressions, are also important elements of our nonverbal behaviour.
Interpersonal attraction: It is the ability to draw others towards oneself. Some people are said
to have magnetic personalities.

BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

1- Carelessness
Carelessness on part of the source to encode a message properly may result in wrong
meaning; similarly carelessness by the receiving to decode a message may cause
misunderstanding.
2- Motivational Distortion
Our own needs, interest and state of mind affects the communication, we offer hear what we
want to hear.
3- Environmental Barrier
The adverse environmental condition are often major barriers noise, interruptions, distances
effects the communication.
4- Lack of Planning
Good communication seldom happens by chance, too often people start writing or speaking
without planning and thinking.
5- Un-clarified Assumption
Most of the time the sender Assumes that the receiver will understand but the result remain
against his assumption.
6- Loss by Transmission or Poor Retention
In a series of transmission the message may get distorted poor attention may also affect
communication.
7- Poor Listening
Listening demands full attention and self discipline.

HOW TO ACHIEVE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

1- Do not make the other person feel that you are judging them.
2- Be Honest tell the exact feelings.
3- It is better to approach people on equal terms.
When you are in Romes do as Romans do.
4- Dont use unclear sentences or words.
5- Make your verbal and non-verbal communication congruent.
6- Be careful about volume, speed, pitch and tune.
7- Paying attention not only to the story, but how it is told, the use of language and voice, and
how the other person uses his or her body to communicate.
8- Concentrate and use your other senses in addition to simply hearing the words spoken.

INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

CONCLUSION
Effective communication is a major part in achieving educational goals. Effectively
communicating with teachers and peers is essential when it comes to your learning. One might
be asked to work on a specific activity that would require you to receive messages from other
team members or an appointed leader.
The Communication is not just the speaking; it also includes listening and observing.
