OBJECTIVES:

to create interest in the topic of natural wonders


to complete an exam-style task ( listening sentence completion )
to role-play an interview with a famous conservationist
to practice vocabulary related to natural wonders

ACTIVITY 1: WARM UP BRIEF TALK ABOUT CHIMPS


OBJECTIVE: to create interest in the topic of natural wonders
CLASS ORGANISATION: group work
ESTIMATED TIME: 5-7 minutes
MATERIALS: handouts
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY: The students are asked to form groups and talk
about a previously dealt-with material ( a handout containing a text about chimps). They are
asked to say which piece of information they found most disturbing or shocking and what
they could do about it. Representatives from each group report their ideas to the class.
ACTIVITY 2: LISTENING SENTENCE COMPLETION
OBJECTIVE: to complete an exam-style task
CLASS ORGANISATION: individual work
ESTIMATED TIME: 15 minutes
MATERIALS: course book (FCE Gold); CD & CD-player
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY: The teacher informs the students about the task ,
they have to listen to the recording and complete the blanks with a suitable word or phrase.
They listen twice to the same recording so as to check and complete their answers. The
answers are then checked with the whole class.
ACTIVITY 3: ROLE PLAY - AN INTERVIEW WITH A CONSERVATIONIST
OBJECTIVE: to role-play an interview with a famous conservationist
CLASS ORGANISATION: pair work
ESTIMATED TIME: 15-20 minutes
MATERIALS: course book ( FCE Gold pp. 187 & 189)
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY: The students are told to form pairs and do the task
in ex.5 p. 158. They will role-play an interview with a famous conservationist. Student A
( the interviewer ) in each pair goes to page 187 ( to see the questions to be asked ) and
student B ( the famous conservationist ) goes to page 189 to see the information s/he will
have to use to answer the interviewers questions. The teacher monitorises the pairs and in
the end asks one pair to do the interview in front of the whole class.
ACTIVITY 4: VOCABULARY PRACTICE
OBJECTIVE: to practice vocabulary related to natural wonders
CLASS ORGANISATION: individual work, pair work
ESTIMATED TIME: 11-15 minutes
MATERIALS: course book (FCE Gold p. 162 ) & worksheets
DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY: The teacher gives each pair of students a

worksheet with vocabulary exercises. In pairs, students solve the exercises in the course
book first and the answers are checked with the whole class. Then, depending on the time
left, the remaining unsolved exercises on the worksheets are to be done at home as
homework.
