A heros welcome at Evans Elementary School

U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Rafael Encinas greeted by entire student body with cheers, flags and thanks
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
On the Friday before Memorial
Day, Marlton resident and U.S.
Air Force Tech Sgt. Rafael Encinas thought he was going to
Evans Elementary School to
speak with his daughter Lucias
class.
However, before any barbecues,
parades or trips to the beach, a literal heros welcome awaited Encinas at the school.
Unbeknownst to Encinas, a
crowd consisting of the entire
Evans student body, armed services support groups Operation
Yellow Ribbon of South Jersey,
the Warriors' Watch Riders and A
Hero's Welcome, the Evesham Police and Fire departments, elected
officials, community members
and more had all assembled outside the school.
As Encinas arrived to the
event, escorted by his own cavalcade of police cars and motorcycles, those at the school cheered,
waved flags, played patriotic
songs and gave Encinas what
they called a welcome celebration
befitting a rock star.
Its a surprise put together by
many people here, and Ill bring it
with me everywhere I go, Encinas said as he spoke before the
crowd. There are many people

ZANE CLARK/The Sun

On May 22, Marlton resident and U.S. Air Force Tech Sgt. Rafael Encinas got a surprise when he thought
he was going to speak to his daughter Lucias class at Evans Elementary School and instead was greeted
with a Memorial Day welcome celebration in his honor. Pictured with Encinas is his wife Angela, daughter
Valentina, son Favi and daughter Lucia.
that I have served with that are no
longer with us, but theyre with

God. This is for them.

Encinas, age 40, is a C-17 air-

He first began his service career with the U.S. Marines, serving for seven years before serving
with the U.S. Navy for two years,
finally joining the U.S. Air Force
where hes served for the past five
years.
Encinas and his wife Angela
are raising their five kids, with
the family having just moved to
Marlton in January.
Reflecting upon the Memorial
Day holiday, Encinas said the day
is a remembrance that what he
and others like him do comes at a
great cost.
Every time there is a freedom
to defend, American lives are
lost, Encinas said. Its like the
slogan says, freedom is not free.
Thats what Memorial Day is all
about. Its to teach our young children and remind the adults that
freedom does not come at a small
cost. Its the cost of life. Hopefully,
the patriotism lives on and never
stops.
That sentiment was echoed by
OYRSJ president and Evans parent Dave Silver, who said school
staff always works so students at
the school grow into the next generation of grateful Americans
and have a true understanding of
Memorial Day.
Its not a weekend to barbe-

craft mechanic and is based out of

McGuire Air Force Base.

Loss of any kind whether it is

the loss of a loved one, career, or a
marriage can weigh heavily on
the mind, body and spirit. To help
individuals learn to better cope
with loss and the grieving
process, Samaritan Healthcare &
Hospice has introduced an innovative approach to grief support.
Yoga Through Loss integrates
gentle yoga poses (asana) and
breath work (pranayama) into a
typical support group setting.
Sessions will include group discussions and psycho-education
related to grief and loss. Individuals will learn to connect with
other participants as they work
toward their own healing. No
yoga experience necessary!
"There are many misconceptions about yoga, explains
Samaritans Yoga Through Loss
facilitator Chrissy Juliano, MSW,
LSW. Some believe that you must

be really flexible in order to participate when, in reality, this is a

practice of meeting the body
right where it is now in this moment and honoring it. This practice is about connection and compassion, and truly begins with
self- love."
Juliano is a grief counselor,
therapist and Hatha Yoga instructor. She received her masters degree from Rutgers University in
2012, and has worked as a perdiem grief counselor at Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice since
February 2014. Additionally, Juliano is a registered yoga instructor through Yoga Alliance and
has attended yoga trainings in
trauma-sensitive yoga at the
Trauma Center at Brookline,
Massachusetts.
Yoga Through Loss sessions
will run once a week for four
weeks starting Monday, June 8 at

Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice,

5 Eves Drive. The cost is $40 for all
six consecutive sessions. Each
session is 90 minutes. Participants are invited to bring their
own personal yoga mat and a bottle of water to each class, if preferred. However, yoga mats will
also be available to individuals as
needed.
Samaritans grief
support
groups are open to anyone in the
community. Pre-registration for
this class is required. Participants are also asked to consult
with a physician before registering.

Successful language classes help

preserve and promote Italian culture
The Marlton New Jersey, Order
of the Sons of Italy in America,
Lodge No. 2315 recently held a
successful series of Italian Language Classes in March and
April. The instructor for the
classes was Robert Campana, a
language teacher at Mainland Regional High School in Linwood.
Campana is a graduate of Montclair State University and has
studied in Italy. He is a frequent
visitor to Italy and holds dual citizenship in Italy and the United
States.
Campana's knowledge of Italy
was advantageous to the class. In
addition to teaching the language,
he covered Italian history, customs and traditions. As an exam-

ple, he used translations of Italian music to teach the class about

its cultural significance. In one
class, he played Verdi's Va Pensiero from the third act of the
opera Nabucco. He taught the
class that the piece had a hidden
revolutionary message for Italian
patriots seeking to unify their
country in years up to 1861, and
that the song is touted by some
modern Italians as a candidate
for the national anthem.
The class, which ran once a
week for four weeks, was aimed
to broaden the knowledge of
those in the community and assist those who would travel to
Italy. The class covered conversational topics such as greetings

and expressions; asking for directions; numbers, counting and

telling time; and how to order in a
bar or restaurant.
Seventy-five people attended
the classes, with almost twothirds of that number non-OSIA
members. These classes successfully accomplished the lodges
main mission to preserve and
promote the Italian culture and
traditions among lodge members
and the wider community. The
overwhelming response indicates
that there is an untapped need for
programs such as this.
As a result, the lodge is planning another series of Italian language classes for the fall of
2015.

Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations

Dan McDonough Jr.

chairman of elauwit media

here arent too many times

when youll read a pro-government-restriction opinion in
this space. As you can probably tell by
our previous diatribes, we mostly
stand for free enterprise without restrictions.
But today, we are in a nutty mood.
Were all for keeping government restrictions in place, at least at the gas
pump.
Last week, state legislators put a
swift halt to a potential proposal to lift
New Jerseys gas-pumping restrictions and allow drivers to pump their
own gas at the station, and we like
what our elected officials have done in
this case for once.
New Jersey has banned self service
at gas stations for almost 70 years, and
we see no reason to change that now.

Your thoughts
What do you think about New Jerseys
ban on self-service gas stations? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Sure, as many people have argued,

having attendants pump our gas for us
is in New Jersey culture. Its part of
who we are spoiled people who dont
have to brave the heat, the cold, the
rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our
gas-guzzling automobiles.
Sure, its nice to have a gas attendant pump our gas and provide an
extra level of security when we need
to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4
in the morning when were avoiding
Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.
But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldnt lift the restrictions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.
There are thousands of people in
New Jersey who have a job pumping
gas. Even if its not a high-paying job,
it still provides necessary income for
those workers. Lift the ban, and these
people will instantly be out of a job.
If allowing self-service gas pumping
would significantly reduce prices at
the pump, then our stance might be
different. But estimates say the switch
would only save a few cents per gallon,
which means the real winners would
be the gas station owners not the
drivers.
So thumbs up to the recent decision
to not lift the government restriction.
It might be the last time you read
those words in this space.

BOE looks to save with vendor switch

New copy machine vendor could reduce leasing, printing costs for district
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Copying and printing machines in the
Evesham Township School District could
soon see some changes.
According to school business administrator John Recchinti, in March a copy machine vendor different from whom the district is currently involved with, approached Recchinti and gave the district a
substantially better price at a reduction
of about $250,000 over four years, in addition to some new software upgrades.
Recchinti said he took that proposal to
current vendor, Stewart Industries, who he
said was able to match the new price, but
didnt include the same number of ma-

chines or any of the software upgrades.

There was a difference in the actual two
proposals. Even though the dollars are similar, theres a difference in the two proposals, Recchinti said.
With that in mind, at the May 28 meeting, the Board of Education awarded a contract to the new vendor, Ricoh USA, for the
lease of 33 copiers for $17,875 per month for
48 months.
Recchinti said that in addition to the reduction in the leasing price, the software
upgrades would allow for a control of the
machines printing workflow the district
does not currently have.
According to Recchinti, instead of being
at a computer and sending a request to one
specific machine, the upgrades would

allow employees to send a request to what

is known as a printer queue, through
which an employee could then go to any
copier throughout the district and print
that request.
If you sent to one machine and that machine was being tied up by another member printing off a large number of copies,
you could just go to another machine,
Recchinti said.
This means employees wouldnt have to
return to their computer to cancel a request, and depending on how the district
uses the new software, requests might not
be printed automatically.
If a request is sent but the employee realplease see RECCHINTI, page 10

Tri-Towne Plaza owner outlines

latest plans at council meeting
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The May 26 meeting of the Evesham Township Council was yet
another step in the long, slow and
possibly soon-to-be complete journey of what residents and local
officials have long derided as an
eyesore the aging and vacant
Route 70 Tri-Towne Plaza.
Residents who attended the
May 26 meeting had the chance to
hear the latest from Richard Birdoff, of New York-based RD Management, the owner of the plaza,
on just how he hopes to have the
barren buildings soon transform
into a mixed-use commercial and
residential site known as Renaissance Square.
We think weve developed an
exciting concept that will bring a

mixed use to the area and bring a

lot of excitement and much better
product for there, Birdoff said.
Birdoff s presentation outlined
plans to demolish the old Sears
building and remove the nearby
Burger King building, and replace them with a total of five residential buildings, with a total of
338 upscale apartments.
Four of the five buildings will
contain 45 units each, while the
fifth larger building will have 158
units with some ground-floor
amenities, a rear swimming pool
and front courtyard where residents can drive through and pick
up or drop off people.
In addition, Birdoff said he
plans to erect a new, 12,600 square
foot commercial building thats
going to be service oriented for
the residents in the apartments,

with possible businesses such as

dry cleaners or small food establishments.
On the side of that building facing Route 70, those businesses
would also have storefront windows so the businesses could have
an area to display their services.
Also planned are two restaurant pad sites in front of the residential buildings that will be the
closest to Route 70, and Birdoff
said he is already in discussions
with several interested parties.
Birdoff also outlined what has
been a problem with many properties along Route 70, that of the
nearly 150-foot swath of land
buffering business from the road
known as Rockefeller Easement,
which the state DOT owns.

Local Cancer Survivors and Caregivers

to be Honored at Relay For Life
Marlton, NJ -May 20, 2015-This past
weekend local cancer survivors and
their caregivers took the celebratory
first lap at the annual American Cancer
Society Relay For Life of Marlton event
which was held on May 30-31, 2015 at
Cherokee High School. As the survivors
and caregivers walked, other event participants cheered them on in a demonstration of support and celebration. The
five-year survival rate for all cancers has
risen to 68 percent, and there are an estimated 14 million Americans alive
today who have been diagnosed with the
disease.
Local Marlton resident Jaclyn Veasy
knows firsthand the important role the
caregiver plays in a cancer patients
journey. Her mother and aunt were both
diagnosed with cancer in the same year.
Caregivers are the key to the physical
and emotional care that a cancer patient
needs, Veasy said. Having a familiar
face near is comforting and a morale
booster when a patient needs it most.
Unfortunately Jaclyns aunt lost her battle with lung cancer five weeks after her
diagnosis. But the Veasy family did not
give up hope, her mother beat bladder
cancer and is now an eight year survivor.
Cancer is an issue that touches all of us
in one way or another and that is why
for the past eight years the entire Veasy
family has participated in Relay For
Life. We were looking for a way to raise
awareness and help cancer patients and
their families during the toughest time
of their lives.
The Relay For Life program is a community event where teams and individ-

uals set up campsites at a school, park, or

fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team
has at least one participant on the track at
all times. Four million people participated
in more than 6,000 events worldwide last
year. The money raised supports groundbreaking cancer research, education and
prevention programs, and critical services for people facing cancer.
It is not too late to support the Relay For
Life of Marlton. Donations are still being
accepted.

Recchinti: Theres a lot

RECCHINTI
Continued from page 6
izes something needs to be
changed, the request can be cancelled before wasting printing
supplies.
You decide well I forgot to
change something, you can just
cancel the job, Recchinti said.

Recchinti also noted the new

software could also be set up in
such a way that it could detect
whether a copy machine would be
the most effective for a request,
and if not, the request could be
rerouted to a machine that would
be more effective at fulfilling the
job.
Theres a lot of additional savings we can get from having this
ability to control copies, Recchinti said.

Master redeveloper to be
designated at June 9 meeting
MASTER
Continued from page 7
While the DOT wont let buildings be developed on the land,
Birdoff said through the help of
Evesham Township officials and
Mayor Randy Brown, the DOT
has been open to allowing Birdoff
to cultivate a series of paths,
benches and green areas in the
space.
Also planned are the addition
of sidewalks along the plazas
frontage on Plymouth Drive and
North Locust Avenue through
which residents could more easily walk to Main Street.
Birdoff said he hopes to have
the redevelopment plans move
through the planning board by
July or August, and would like to
start construction in the fall.
When the floor was opened to
questions from members of the

public, only one resident, Marlene Pinelas, spoke, and questioned where all the new residents from the Renaissance
Square and other upcoming
apartment projects in the township would buy groceries.
Brown said that although Birdoff s property has long been rumored as a potential site for a
new grocery store, there were no
current retailers with interest in
moving to the space, despite both
Brown and Birdoff openly welcoming that type of addition.
As we are a public entity and
we set public policy, we cant demand for someone to build a supermarket, Brown said. Whatever private entity wants to come
to Evesham and create a supermarket, theyre more than welcome to.
The master redeveloper for the
Renaissance project is scheduled
to be designated at the councils
next meeting on June 9.

attendance as a special guest was Marlton resident Ben Lichtman, a
