Org .Setting And Reporting
These positions are located in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and will report to
the Unit/Section Chief or the Chief Engineer through the State Engineer.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Facilities Management Assistant will be responsible for the
following duties: Assist in scheduling and supervision for construction, repair, maintenance
and installation of conventional buildings, temporary buildings, infrastructure and sites and
premises including grounds in the mission area. Lead and supervise ad hoc tradesmen, local
and international junior staff assigned to the team by determining workloads and schedules.
Review and recommend for approval work orders and assign day to day repair and
maintenance tasks to tradesmen being supervised. Maintain records relating to work orders
and general correspondence. Report on construction project work and maintenance work
carried out by tradesmen, and ensure proper utilization of available resources. Assist in
preparation of bills of quantities and costing for infrastructure projects. Resolve problems;
inspect quality of work and work performance. Perform diagnostics and preventive
maintenance, resolve basic engineering problems and inspect quality of work and work

performance. Advise on requirements for ordering construction materials, maintenance


projects, equipment, spare parts, materials and building supplies. Issue instructions at site,
record variances, supervise and record measurements of work taken with respect to work
progress. Inspect and report on construction project work and maintenance work carried out
either by contractors or tradesmen and staff under supervision, and ensure proper utilization
of available resources. Follow up on correction of defects in material. Assist in the
preparation of cost estimates for infrastructure projects and maintenance programmes. Assist
in technically evaluating bids and proposals for construction projects. Assist in carrying out
technical assessments of existing buildings and infrastructure Provide inputs periodically for
assessment of performance levels of assigned local and international staff. Alert the Chief of
Unit / Section of unusual occurrence and/or damage that have taken place or are likely to
occur. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the Section Chief.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Technical or vocational certificate in a trade
(carpentry, plumbing, welding) is desirable.
Work Experience
At least six (6) years of relevant experience in construction project implementation in a
private, commercial or military environment, installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing
buildings and infrastructure. Experience in international operations in a post conflict
environment is desirable.
Languages

French and English are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post, fluency in
English (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is
desirable.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be
followed by competency-based interview.
