Introduction

The principal goal of Daily Scale Studies for Double Bass Violin is to
provide students with the most essential scale exercises in an easy to follow format.
Each scale is designed as a daily exercise that will take about 30 minutes to complete.
It is my intention that these scale studies will save you from being overwhelmed and
frustrated with the massive amount of material offered in other method books.
Before working on these scale studies, it is important that you thoroughly absorb
the techniques in Joel Quarrington's "Daily Exercises". I suggest that you continue
to spend a some time each day working on Exercises 1, 3, 4 and "El Perro".
The Scale
Each scale is to be played using the Galamian Acceleration Patterns.
Incorporate the bowing variations on page 60 when time allows.
Scale Progressions
Scale progressions help us work on pivoting, binary fingering and shifting.
Play groups of 3 with all three notes in one position and pivoting.
Play groups of 4 as duples, i.e. two shifts per beat.
Play slowly. Work for accuracy, not speed.
Intervals - Thirds
Practice 3rds, 4ths & 5ths UP the string and not across adjacent strings.
Thirds, played up the string, are the most musical way to play melodic bass lines.
The goal is to acheive a seemless connection, with no break in the sound,
between the two notes of the interval. Therefore, a pivot or reach, in the left hand
is used to connect the the notes of the interval and NOT a shift.
After pivoting to reach the note, then relax the hand and thumb back into balance.
Descending intervals are aided by releasing the thumb back (towards the nut) and
pulling the hand back into balance. Practicing intervals in this way will teach you how
to stay relaxed, flexible and balanced and you will be avoiding the tension created by
moving the arm and hand together as a single unit.
Double stopping 3rds and Octaves will help you learn to adjust the distance between
the thumb and fingers as they move around the fingerboard.
When time allows, incorporate broken 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths and octaves (page 62).
The Arpeggio
Arpeggios must be practiced VERY SLOWLY! Only increase the speed as the
shifts become 100% accurate and you begin to play more notes within a single bow.
Change the bowing variations each week. Additional "Inversion" patterns are on page 64.
Flesch Arpeggios
This arpeggio pattern is a time proven exercise in helping students become comfortable
with extensive shifting. The Flesch arpeggios produce great rewards because it forces
you to constantly change the intervals and the shifting distance.

Galamian Acceleration Patterns

This example is in C Major. Notice that each pattern contains two beats per bow,
with the exeption of the last pattern (32nd notes), which contains three beats per bow.

q = 40-60

Scale Progressions

- Play groups of 3 with three notes in the hand and pivoting.

Each group starts with the 1st finger, except groups that start with an open string.
Don't use the thumb. Play UP the string until you get to a clear open string that takes all the notes.
- Play groups of 4 as duples, i.e. 2 shifts per beat.
Play UP the string until the left hand sits entirely on a new string.
- Play groups of 5 with combinations of 3's and 2's.
The formula is dependant on the harmony: Major = 2+3, Minor = 3+2, Diminished = 2+3
Therefore, on Major Scales the 1st scale degree = major (2+3), 2nd scale degree = minor (3+2)
III = minor (3+2), IV = major (2+3), V = major (2+3), VI = minor (3+2), VII = diminished (2+3)
- On minor scales, practice scale progressions on the Natural Minor Scale.
- Play scale progressions both legato and slurred staccato.
- THE SPEED OF ALL THE NOTES IS THE SAME for all groups! (triplet 8th = 16th = fivelet)
