Pre-IB English II Summer Reading 2015

You will need a composition notebook. Skip the first two pages in the composition notebook; we will use to set up a table of contents.
Summer reading journals will be used and checked the first Friday of the school year.

Objective: Participate in a grade level shared reading; read closely for elements of plot,
character and tone in fiction in order to cite textual evidence in writing.
Get the Book: from CCHS Media Center, the public library, online or purchase it on your
own. Purchase a copy of the book so that you can color mark it as directed below.
Directions:
1. Read the book.
2. Pay particular attention to how Alexie creates characters and draws out the contrast between
Native and non-native communities.
3. Take notes as directed below on elements of the plot in your journal.

On Writing
by Stephen King

Objective: Identify and analyze tools authors use to create style. We will use these tools to
analyze the work of other writers.

Directions:
1. Read the book.
2. Pay particular attention to Kings sense of self (his identity and coming of age as a writer)
and notice how he describes conflictsboth internal and externalthat he over came.
3. Take notes as directed below in your journal.
