Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 1- English Language Learner Tutor

$14.93 per hour, no benefits. This position will work a maximum of 69 hours per
month.

South Puget Sound Community College is recruiting for a non-permanent part-time hourly position to serve
the learning support needs of English Language Learners. This recruitment is open to all applicants who
meet the desirable qualifications stated below.
The Instruction and Classroom Support Technician 1 supports the learning needs of ELL students in the
Basic Skills ESL program, the Intensive English program and ELL students in Pre-College courses. This
position reports to the Learning Resource Center Administrator and will be working primarily with English
Language Learners, assisting them with development in language skills needed to support their academic
success. This includes helping students develop learning strategies, problem solving, and study skills needed
to complete academic class assignments, as well as guiding them in the use of learning center resources and
creating and maintaining an environment conducive to learning.
Responsibilities and Typical Work:
Assist ELL students with language and study skills needed to complete academic class assignments;
help students navigate resources and become independent learners
Conduct one-on-one and group study sessions
Attend class sessions, assisting the instructor with supplemental instruction on specific class content.
Participate in team meetings, and regular training sessions throughout each quarter to develop and
deliver best practices in college tutoring
Create and maintain an environment conducive to learning
Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated post-secondary level competency in English language
Ability to tutor English Language Learners in Basic Skills, Intensive English and Pre-College in the
following:
o Writing composition and grammar
o Communication (speaking and listening)
o Vocabulary development
o Reading strategies
Ability to tutor students in success strategies such as note taking, study, organization, prioritization of
tasks, test-taking, and time management skills
Ability to communicate effectively with students, employing the interpersonal skills necessary to engage,
motivate, and encourage.
Computer proficiency, including the ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve hardware and software
issues and use (i.e. Microsoft Office Suite) in academic settings.
Preferred Qualifications:
Earned, or in-process of earning, an AA/AS or BA/BS from an accredited community or 4-year
college

Experience working with adult English Language Learners


Knowledge of the concepts of Universal Design
Ability to communicate clearly and slowly
Previous experience tutoring, or knowledge of best practices, including tutoring strategies and
learning theory through work, training, or academic experience
An approach to work and a sensitivity that encompasses a holistic view of the learner and the
learning environment, which includes empathy, flexibility, and adaptability

Working Conditions:
This position will perform in an office/classroom setting and will operate standard office equipment such as a
personal computer, calculator, scanner, etc. The ability to organize, prioritize and accommodate numerous
interruptions is essential. This position may require moving boxes weighing up to 30 pounds.

Non-permanent employees under the provisions of WAC 357-19-435 are only authorized to work up to a
maximum of 1050 hours in any twelve (12) consecutive- month period from the original date of hire.
Employment with the college could end any time during the 1050 hour period as measured from the
original date of hire.
All Non-permanent employees who work more than 350 hours during any consecutive 12-month period
will be covered by the WFSE collective bargaining agreement and union security. At that time, the
employer will furnish the employee with a dues authorization form for payroll deduction of union dues.
