Elementary Japanese Listening Materials

I. ORGANIZATION
Each lesson of the Elementary Japanese Listening Materials consists of three parts:
(A) Dialog
(B) Vocabulary
(C) Listening Exercises
For each lesson, the bookmarks pane (on the left) lists (i) lesson number, (ii) script, (iii)
vocabulary, and (iv) (listening) exercises. Some lessons include additional materials. You can
select any section in any order. Clicking a speaker icon on each page will start the default audioplayer program of your computer, and you can hear the listening material. All audio files on this
CD are in MP3 format. If your computer does not play the files, please consult your operating
system manual.

II. HOW TO USE THE LISTENING MATERIALS

A. Dialog
When you click on a lesson number in the bookmarks pane, the corresponding dialog comic strip
page opens. Click on the speaker icon on the upper right-hand side of the page and listen to the
dialog. It is recommended that you study the dialogs in three steps:
(1) Listen to the lessons entire dialog, trying to understand the situation and the overall topic of
the conversation.
(2) Listen to each utterance in a dialog, trying to learn pronunciation and intonation. It is
strongly recommended that you listen to each utterance multiple times and imitate it. Use the
pause and playback functions of your audio-player program.
(3) Listen to the entire dialog again, making sure that you thoroughly understand its content.
If you are unable to recognize some speech sounds or not sure what an utterance means, you can
click on the script bookmark to see the text accompanied by its English translation.
B. Vocabulary
Click on the vocabulary bookmark to see and listen to the corresponding vocabulary list. You
will hear individual words in Japanese, each of which is followed by its English translation.
There are two ways to use the vocabulary section:
(1) Listen to the recording, following along with the vocabulary list on the screen. In this way,
you can learn the relationships and develop the associations among the pronunciation, pitch
accent, and the written form of each vocabulary item. Pay special attention to long vowels,
long consonants, complex consonants, and the moraic nasal consonant ().
(2) Listen to the recording without looking at the vocabulary list on the screen, making sure that
you understand the meaning of each Japanese word. You can test how well you have learned
each word. Use the pause button of your audio-player program after each Japanese word if
you need more interval.
C. Listening Exercises
Exercise bookmarks open a listening exercises page, displaying the answer sheet of each lesson.
(You can print a hard copy of the answer sheet, if you prefer.) By clicking speaker icons, you can
listen to short dialogs and questions about them for listening comprehension practice. All the
dialogs and questions have been composed using the grammatical constructions and the
vocabulary items which have been introduced in the corresponding lesson or in those preceding
it, so you should be able to understand the material. After studying each lesson, test your
listening comprehension using this CD. If you are a self-learner, you can purchase the
Elementary Japanese Teachers Guide, which provides the answer keys.

III. UNIFIED VOCABULARY LIST

This CD contains consolidated lists of vocabulary (Japanese-to-English and English-to-Japanese)
from Lessons 1-14, both as PDF files and as an Excel spreadsheet. You can search a word or
phrase in either format. In addition, you can sort the vocabulary in the Excel file, which is
particularly convenient when you are writing an essay and you can see all of the verbs that you
have already learned. First, click the top-left cell to highlight all cells. Next, click on Sort under
the Data pull-down menu. Then specify the column(s) by which you would like to sort the data.

Yes, and I got a letter from my host family yesterday, but there are some sentences
that I dont understand well.

And Id like to write a reply, but I wont be able to write it very well. Do you

Sure.

Thank you.

Dear Miller-san, how are you? Were all doing fine too.

Is it cold over there? Its very cold here. But Mayumi and Taro are happy because we had
snow last week. The kids made a snowman in the garden.

Everyone here is eager to meet you soon. When you come here, lets all go to Nara,

Itll be winter break soon, you know? Yamamoto-san, what are you going to do
during winter break?

In order to buy a car, Im going to be working. Ive decided to work at the Student
Union Store.

Really? That sounds tough. What about you, Miller-san?

Ive decided to go to Japan on (Lit. by means of) a homestay program, because I

want to learn about Japanese customs. Ill be staying at the house of Akiyamas,
my host family.

Wow, thats great.

(Lit.) Both Mr. and Mrs. Akiyama will have a week off, so its been planned that

Both Mr. and Mrs. Akiyama will have a week off, so it turns out theyre planning
to take me to places like Nara and Kyoto.

Thats wonderful. There are lots of famous temples and shrines in Nara and
Kyoto.

Wheres Akiyama-sans house?

Its in Tokyo.

Well then, you can go to Disneyland too.

Yes, I definitely want to go there. By the way, whats a good gift (for them)?

Lets see. How about university T-shirts? Because theyre small, light, and not
very expensive, theyd be very convenient.

Chocolates would be nice, too.

Youre right. Okay then, Ill decide on T-shirts and chocolates.

You can buy the chocolates at the airport.

Thatll be easy, then.
